2 Dear Parishioners, As I draw towards the end of my seven years as your Pastor, I d like to share a few thoughts with you. I want to start by thanking the staff, lay leaders and all the volunteers I have worked with since coming to St. Rita s. It has been my honor and privilege to serve with some of the most generous and faith-filled people I ve ever met. St. Rita s is truly blessed with extraordinary leaders and volunteers. I will miss working, serving and praying with all of you. I d also like say a word or two about how proud I am of all that has been accomplished these past seven years. At the top of the list is our wonderful liturgy. When I first came to the parish, my hope and goal was to con nue the long St. Rita s tradi on of vibrant liturgical celebra ons and add to it a heightened sense of the sacred, and a reverence for the Eucharist. Again, with the help of so many, (and especially those on the liturgy team ) I think we ve done that. Also, in no small part, thank you to one of the best music ministries around. In a long list of things, I m going to miss about St. Rita s, the music and the liturgy are at the top of the list! I m also very grateful for the planning and construc on of our new faith forma on wing. Thanks to the reless efforts of so many and the generous financial commitments by a large number of our parishioners, we have a building that is not only beau ful, but has been an incredible blessing to our faith forma on program and the many ministries that also use it. It was a long me coming (and a lot of hard work) but our new space will serve this parish community for many years to come. Speaking of spaces, I would be remiss if I didn t say a word about the enhancements to our worship space. Of all the churches I ve presided in, St. Rita s is one of my favorites. With the addi on of the statues of Mary, Joseph and St. Rita, the new cross (and the crosses that frame our Sta ons), some addi onal ligh ng, a li le paint, and of course the kneelers, we have a worship space that not only works wonderfully for contemporary liturgy, but also has a Catholic and sacred feel. I am so grateful to our liturgical furniture builder Deacon Jack and all those who donated and collaborated on enhancing our beau ful space. The Church is the people. And at St. Rita s, the people have a beau ful and warm space to be Church. Finally, I save, as they say, the best for last. Besides all of our accomplishments and the incredible ministries that we have from Mission Outreach to the gardeners! the thing I will miss most about St. Rita s is the people. Some of the most meaningful moments in my priestly ministry have taken place in this parish, but more than that, the friendships I have formed and the support I have experienced while being here are truly the greatest blessings. As many of you know, a couple of years back I went through a bit of a health scare (I m all good now -- thanks be to God!) but I will never forget the kindness and help I received from so many. From medical advice from Deacon Steve, to parishioners praying for me and delivering soup to the rectory, I felt (and feel) so cared for. As if all the things listed above wouldn t be enough, the love and support I received at St. Rita s made sure this Community would always have a very special place in my heart no pun intended! In closing, please know how grateful I am for all that we have accomplished together these past seven years, and how grateful I am for each of you. I may be going to the other side of the kingdom, but West Bloomington is not that far, so please come over once in a while and visit. In the mean me, God bless you. And God bless the Community of St. Rita s. Love, Fr. Rick 2
3 JACK S FACTS What is canon law all about? We hear about decisions and ac ons in the Catholic Church being determined by cannon law. Put simply, canon law is how the Church organizes and governs itself. There are about 1.3 billion Catholics in the world, and the Church administers a large collec on of ins tu ons. The Church needs an organiza onal structure to carry out its office of governance and its saving mission. Every society needs laws and so does the church. Cannon law deals with many legal values such as rights, property issues, procedures and so on. It also deals with things not of a civil issue such as sacraments, sacred places and teachings among many other things. The Church s laws have developed greatly over its 2,000-year history. Beginning in the New Testament, we see that there are procedures for replacing an apostle (see Acts 1:15-26); also, what to do when there are disputes in the Church (Mt 18:15-20). Eventually, these laws and decrees were collected into what became known as canon law. In 1917, there was a major reform and the law was codified, published as the first Code of Canon Law. A er the Second Va can Council there were revisions and an updated code was issued in Cannon law then is the legal and moral code by which the Catholic Church operates and func ons. New to the fall fes val this year is a photo compe on! Find your favorite photo and watch for the entry forms coming soon. Back by popular demand is the talent show open to all. Entry forms are in today s bulle- n or available in the office. Keep collec ng items for the Country Store, Wine Raffle, Silent Auc on, Farmers Market, and Stuffed Animals for the Kids Games. Again, being a sponsor or asking a business that you have a connec on with for dona ons is a great way to help. Many blessings to you all. Pat Kotnour Fall Fes val Chair patkotn@aol.com Vaca on Bible School is the week of July and is open to children ages 4 3 rd grade. Our theme this year is Shipped Wreck-rescued by Jesus It is a week of bible stories, music, cra s, games and lots of fun. To register, forms can found in the front office or on our web page. Volunteers are needed as group leaders, cra leaders, snack leaders and game leaders. To help in this fun week, contact Kathy Kovarik at the parish center. The annual perennial plant sale was once again a huge success. Thanks to the many dedicated gardeners who gave of their me, talents and sore backs to this project. We truly thank all who labored, purchased and worked the sale on that cold, windy, wet day. An amazing $3, was raised. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Mission Outreach has just started an exci ng new ministry serving the homeless in St. Paul. Weekends are tougher for the homeless to find nutri onal meals. So we have partnered with other churches and will be taking one weekend a month to put together 60 protein rich nonperishable meal bags. They are then taken to the Listening House in St. Paul for their staff to distribute. This happens on the second Friday of the month at 9AM a er mass. Mission Outreach is always open to welcoming new members. If you are interested in joining our group or just seeing what we are all about. our next mee ng is Thursday, July 12 th at 7PM. For more informa on about our Listening House project, or if you would like more informa on about Mission Outreach, please contact Mary at maryhilgers@gmail.com. 3
