2 St. James - St. Leo April 21, 2019 Page 2 Fr. Gerard s Corner No angels appear in today s Gospel passage to explain to the disciples that Jesus had been raised. Therefore, the first reactions to the empty tomb are fear and confusion. Mary Magdalene feared someone had stolen the body. John stopped outside the tomb and did not go in at first. Neither Peter nor John understood that Jesus had to rise from the dead. It is not until later in John s Gospel, when the risen Jesus appears to Mary Magdalene, then later the other disciples, that they realize what has happened and understand that Jesus has risen. Understanding what happened took time. For John, the mission Jesus received from the Father is not complete until he has returned to the Father. Jesus absence from the tomb is not the conclusion. The conclusion is found in the beginning, when Jesus, the incarnate Word, was with God. Once he has returned to the Father, he has accomplished his mission to redeem the world through his ultimate sacrificial act. Then Jesus returns to the disciples with the gift of the Holy Spirit, sending them out on their mission. Their mission is now our mission. If we needed a reminder, we will get one in a few moments. We will stand together to renew the promises we made or that were made on our behalf at baptism, which we renew each year. We affirm our faith and we renounce what keeps us from God. We promise to serve God as members of the Body of Christ. Peter tells those who are about to be baptized that they are called to preach and testify in Jesus name. Evangely at eward@stjames-stleo.org TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Over the centuries, the Church has demonstrated a wonderful ability to adopt a culture s favorite symbols and customs and assign them new meaning. Easter eggs have a very ancient pedigree: nature s perfect package, emblem of new life, dyed and decorated and given as gifts in ancient Egypt, Rome, China, and Persia. Just as the long hard winter is over, the egg bursts with promise of life and nourishment. Long ago, Christians came to see the egg not as a symbol of spring s rebirth, but of ours, and as a sign of Christ s tomb. A Polish legend says that Mary, in compassion for the soldiers at the cross, gave them eggs, but that her tears stained their shells with brilliant color. Legends have their origin in tales told around a hearth, but they often contain a profound truth. The idea of Mary, the first Christian, engaged in a merciful act of forgiveness and tenderness even in the shadow of the cross, describes the age old wish that Christ Easter in us. Gerardo En el pasaje del Evangelio de hoy no hay ángeles que se les aparezcan a los discípulos para explicarles que Jesús ha resucitado. Por lo tanto, las primeras reacciones ante el sepulcro vació son de temor y confusión. María Magdalena temía que alguien se hubiese robado el cuerpo. Juan se quedó afuera del sepulcro y no entró enseguida. Ni Pedro ni Juan entendieron que Jesús tenía que resucitar de entre los muertos. No es hasta después, en el Evangelio según san Juan, que Jesús resucitado se aparece a María Magdalena y más tarde a los otros discípulos, y entonces se dan cuenta de lo que ha sucedido y comprenden que Jesús ha resucitado. Comprender lo sucedido tomó tiempo. Para Juan la misión que Jesús recibió del Padre no está cumplida hasta que Jesús regresa al Padre. La ausencia de Jesús en el sepulcro no es la conclusión. La conclusión se encuentra en el comienzo cuando Jesús, la Palabra encarnada, estaba con Dios. Una vez que regresa al Padre, su misión de redimir al mundo se ha cumplido por su sacrificio definitivo. Luego Jesús regresa a sus discípulos con el don del Espíritu Santo y los envía a su misión. La misión de ellos es nuestra misión ahora. Si necesitamos un recordatorio, lo recibiremos dentro de unos breves minutos. Juntos nos pondremos de pie para renovar las promesas que hicimos (o que se hicieron por nosotros) en nuestro bautismo, las cuales renovamos todos los años. Afirmamos nuestra fe y renunciamos a todo lo que nos aleje de Dios. Prometemos servir a Dos como miembros del Cuerpo de Cristo.
