2 St. James - St. Leo December 23, 2018 Page 2 Fr. Gerard s Corner The presence of the Lord causes John the Baptist to leap with joy and Elizabeth to proclaim her unworthiness. This recalls David s reaction in the Old Testament when the ark of the covenant is brought to Jerusalem. How can the ark of the LORD come to me? he asks (2 Samuel 6:9). But later, he came before the ark dancing and shouting for joy. Why did David react this way? David was moved because he was in the presence of the Lord. The ark of the covenant symbolized God s presence among the Chosen People. Elizabeth and her son recognized that when Mary arrived, they were literally in the presence of the Lord. So too are we whenever we gather in his name, as we do today. Earlier in Luke s Gospel, an angel appeared to Elizabeth s husband, Zechariah, and told him that his son would be filled with the Holy Spirit even from his mother s womb (Luke 1:15). Mary s arrival may be the very moment at which John the Baptist (and Elizabeth) received the Holy Spirit. Since Jesus was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit, the Spirit could then be received by others in the presence of Jesus, even while he was still in the womb. Mary s selfless act in the Gospel, visiting her pregnant cousin, puts us in mind of Jesus ultimate selfless act, which the writer of Hebrews interprets in the second reading. Jesus body, offered for our salvation, is that body that developed in Mary s womb. God s will required that Jesus first be born bodily into this world. Fr. Gerard J.S. Paluch Co., Inc. MEMORIES AND DREAMS Throughout our lives, we retain the language and habits of our native region and family of origin. Should we return to our home after a long absence, we quickly revert to its familiar speech and practices. Our deep memory is reflected in old stories and words and speech patterns. This familiarity runs like an underground river and accompanies us wherever we go. Not only do we remember, we are incorporated into and made part of a greater memory. In remembering and recollecting, we are in turn gathered up and re-collected. Today we remember Mary, a small figure travelling the country roads to visit Elizabeth. All the great pronouncements and dreams of the prophets point to this time when the Lord s words to Mary would be gathered and fulfilled. Catholic Charities is also collecting clothing, such as long pants, shirts, sweatshirts, jackets and new socks and underwear for men, women and children, mostly in medium and small sizes. Gerardo La presencia del Señor hace que Juan el Bautista salte de gozo y que Isabel proclame ser indigna de tanto favor. Esto nos recuerda la reacción de David en el Antiguo Testamento cuando el arca de la alianza fue llevada a Jerusalén. Cómo va a entrar en mi casa el arca del Señor?, pregunta David (2 Samuel 6, 9). Pero después vino ante el arca y saltó y danzó de gozo. Por qué reaccionó David de esta manera? Fue el estar en presencia del Señor lo que hizo reaccionar así a David. El arca de la alianza simbolizaba la presencia de Dios en medio del pueblo escogido. Isabel y su hijo reconocieron que al llegar María estaban en presencia del Señor. Así sucede también con nosotros cuando nos reunimos en su nombre, como lo hacemos hoy. Anteriormente en el Evangelio de Lucas un ángel se le había aparecido a Zacarías, el esposo de Isabel, y le dijo que su hijo estaría lleno del Espíritu Santo, ya desde el seno de su madre (Lucas 1, 15). La llegada de María podría haber sido el preciso momento en que Juan el Bautista (e Isabel) recibieron el Espíritu Santo. Puesto que Jesús fue concebido por obra y gracia del Espíritu Santo, ese mismo Espíritu podían recibirlo otras personas en presencia de Jesús, aunque aún no hubiese nacido. La actitud humilde de María en el Evangelio al ir a visitar a su prima encinta nos trae a la mente la acción definitiva de Jesús, la cual interpreta el autor de la carta a los hebreos en nuestra segunda lectura de hoy. El cuerpo de Jesús ofrecido por nuestra salvación es ese cuerpo que se desarrolló en el vientre de María. Fue decisión de Dios que Jesús naciera físicamente en este mundo. P.
