2 St. James - St. Leo July 15, 2018 Page 2 Fr. Gerard s Corner When Amos is banished from Bethel for his prophesying, he responds, I was no prophet... I was a shepherd and a dresser of sycamores (Amos 7:14). Like Jesus disciples centuries later, Amos did not study to be a priest or a prophet. He was called by God from his chosen profession. He cared for sheep and also for the fig-like fruit of the sycamore tree, which had to be pierced to allow it to ripen fully. Perhaps in his new role he needed to pierce the corruption of the rulers in order to let the kingdom of God blossom. Jesus sent out the disciples two by two, which certainly made traveling easier and safer. It is interesting to speculate about how they were paired off. Perhaps Peter, impetuous and outspoken, was sent with Thomas, unsure of what he did not see himself. Maybe Andrew, the fisherman, traveled with Matthew, the tax collector. Who might have been paired with Judas? Yet despite the differing personalities and backgrounds and attitudes, they were all able to do the work of the Lord. Jesus disciples could not bring much at all on their mission, but still they were able to attract followers, drive out demons, and cure many who were sick. They could only take a walking stick, their sandals, and the clothes on their back, but that is not all they had. They had authority over unclean spirits. They had the model of Jesus, whom they had witnessed accomplishing these things. They assuredly had the Lord s guidance. God provided all they needed; anything more would just have been unnecessary and distracting. Fr. Gerard J.S. Paluch Co., Inc. 6 St. James - St. Leo July 15, 2018 Page 6 CALLED BY GOD Today s scriptures invite us to listen to two calls. The first is the call issued by the LORD to the prophet Amos, the shepherd and a dresser of sycamores (Amos 7:14). The second is the call the Lord Jesus issued to the Twelve, whom he sent out two by two (Mark 6:7). These faithful people responded to the call, prophesying and preaching to the people to whom they had been sent. Each of us received a call when we were baptized. The second reading invites us to ponder that call as we are reminded that we are chosen in Christ and that, in love, God destined us for adoption (Ephesians 1:5). As adopted daughters and sons of God we are called to bring the presence of Christ into our marriages, families, schools, and places of work. Let us be inspired today to say yes to the call we hear once again through God s living word. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. Stewardship Reflection He instructed them to take nothing for the journey. When Jesus sent his Apostles out, He sent them two by two, and He basically commanded them to take nothing on the journey: no food, no sack, no money in their belts. The point of the Lord is that all they needed was to trust in God. Jesus more or less says the same thing to us. As long as we trust in God, our needs will be met. That is easily said, but it is a bit daunting to actually do it. Yet, people have been doing that since Jesus time. It is one of the reasons that the Church has thrived for such a long time. There is a secondary reason for Jesus instructions though, one with which we may not be familiar. At that time there was a ruled that you could not enter a temple area with shoes or a moneybag, because you were there to serve the Lord, nothing else and no one else. The Apostles understood that preaching the Gospel and healing in God s name was holy work. Jesus did not want them to exemplify any other motive either. One of the foundational elements of stewardship is trusting God. What enables us to be good stewards and to think of giving to God first, of ourselves and what we have, is that we truly believe that God will take care of us. God has a plan for each of us, and it is better than our own plan may be.
