Gerard s Corner The first reading today is quite familiar, but it is cut off before we hear the consequences that befall Eve, Adam, and humanity for their disobedience. Only the serpent is punished in this selection. The serpent plays the role of Satan here. Cunning and deceptive, the serpent has tricked the woman into disobeying God. Eventually, however, the serpent will meet its match: her offspring will strike at your head, while you strike at his heel (Genesis 3:15). From generation to generation, temptation will always have to be fought, but God has given us an advantage over Satan. Satan makes a return appearance in the Gospel. The scribes accused Jesus of being possessed by Satan because he healed people and drove out demons on the Sabbath. Mark, writing to convince people that Jesus was the Son of God, has Jesus show them how ridiculous their conclusion is: How can Satan drive out Satan? (Mark 3:23). He reveals the Holy Spirit as the true power behind his work. This is the clean spirit, if you will, driving out the unclean spirits. Since we are all blessed with the Holy Spirit in us, this means that we too have the power to defeat temptation, to drive out Satan. When we act in accord with the Spirit, we show our kinship with Jesus, for whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother (Mark 3:35). Resisting temptation is not easy, for the serpent is a formidable foe, but when we do we progress toward the reward of an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison (2 Corinthians 4:17). Fr. Call Amy (858) ext. *103 Stewardship Reflection In today s First Reading from the Book of Genesis we hear the story of Adam and Eve and their sins, defying God. However, when God was present in the garden, the man and woman hid themselves. Adam responds to God s question why in part by saying I was afraid so I hid myself. Did he, do any of us really think he could hide from God? As children many of us may have hidden from a parent when we did something wrong and it was in violation of some specific order we had received. Our efforts to hide what we did and to hide ourselves were probably no more effective than Adam s. As humans we know the temptation of following our own plans, even if they are contrary to God s. We think we know better and we may try to still have it our way. If what we have done is particularly shameful, we may try to hide our sins from God. The sincere truth is that we cannot hide from God any more than Adam and Eve could. Psalm 139 declares, Where can I hide from your spirit (God s)? From your presence where can I flee? If I ascend to the heavens, you are there; if I lie down in Sheol (the place of the dead) you are there, too. If I say Surely darkness will hide me Darkness is not dark for you. What are we hiding from? In recent weeks we have learned over and over how much God loves us. It is time for us to accept that and not hide. GN 3: 9-15; PS 130: 1-8; 2 COR: 4:13 5:1; MK 3: 20-35

The reading from Genesis promises a final triumph over the power of sin and a return to a new creation. The reading from Second Corinthians promises that all who follow Christ will have to struggle. It also promises, however, that we can persevere if we but recognize that Christ is within us, renewing us daily, and giving us the courage and the strength we need to endure. The Gospel promises that doing God s will makes us family with Jesus, who forgives all sin and triumphs over evil. Today might be a good day for us to make some promises as well. We can promise to stop kidding ourselves about our own tendencies to selfishness and sin. We can promise ourselves to believe really believe that while we are not sinless, we are forgiven. Gerardo La primera lectura de hoy nos es bastante familiar, pero se corta antes de que escuchemos las consecuencias que le acaecen a Eva, a Adán y a toda la humanidad por la desobediencia de ellos. Solamente es la serpiente la que sale castigada en este pasaje. Aquí la serpiente juega el papel de Satanás. La serpiente, astuta y engañosa, ha timado a la mujer para que desobedezca a Dios. A la larga, sin embargo, la serpiente se encontrará con alguien que iguala sus habilidades: la descendencia de ella te aplastará la cabeza, mientras tú tratarás de morder su talón (Génesis 3:15). De generación en generación siempre habrá que batallar con la tentación, pero Dios nos ha dado la ventaja sobre Satanás. Satanás vuelve a aparecer en el Evangelio. Los escribas acusaban a Jesús de estar poseído por Satanás, porque curaba a las personas y expulsaba a los demonios en el sábado. Marcos, que escribió para convencer a la gente de que Jesús era el Hijo de Dios, describe a Jesús mostrándoles cuán ridícula era la conclusión de ellos: Cómo puede Satanás expulsar a Satanás? (Marcos 3:23). Jesús revela al Espíritu Santo como el poder verdadero en sus obras. Éste es el espíritu puro, por así decirlo, que expulsa a los espíritus impuros o inmundos. Puesto que todos somos agraciados con el Espíritu Santo, que habita en nosotros, quiere decir que también nosotros tenemos el poder para vencer la tentación y expulsar a Satanás. Cuando actuamos conforme al Espíritu demostramos nuestro parentesco con Jesús, pues el que cumple la voluntad de Dios, ése es mi hermano, mi hermana y mi madre (Marcos 3:35). No es fácil resistir a la tentación, pues la serpiente es un enemigo formidable, pero cuando resistimos progresamos hacia el premio de una riqueza eterna, una gloria que los sobrepasa con exceso (2 corintos 4:17).
