Lift Up Your Hearts SOUTH PARK, PA Palm Sunday marks our entrance into Holy Week, when we are given the opportunity to accompany Jesus through his passion and death, and to celebrate Christ s victory over sin and death in His Resurrection. For so many of us this week evokes strong memories, presents opportunities to celebrate family traditions rooted in our faith but it is the opportunity that our God gives us to appreciate anew the great gift of our redemption. I invite you to make a special effort to join us for the Masses and services of Holy Week and Easter. The Easter Triduum (the Three Days of Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter) presents us with real opportunities to encounter the Lord in these beautiful and moving liturgies. Please keep in prayer our catechumens and candidates preparing to receive the Sacraments of the Church at the Easter Vigil. They are each wonderful and sincere persons whose individual journeys and commitment to the Lord Jesus are as much a gift to our parish as our parish has been to them! Our heartfelt thanks to Sister Briege McKenna for spending this last week with us through our parish mission. I am glad that so many from our parishes were able to be with us to pray with and listen to Sister Briege witness to us about God healing power at work among us. And I am also very thankful to our parish staff, and so many of our parishioners who volunteered to offer hospitality to Sister and to our visitors. Many thanks to our devoted parish and school volunteers from both Saint Joan and Saint Louise who worked so hard at both of our Fish Fries over these last several weeks. We are grateful for the kind welcome offered to both parishioners and guests alike, and for the tremendous financial support that these events offer. In Christ, Fr. Joe April 7 Offertory: $8, Second Collection this weekend Repairs & Replacements Good Friday: Holy Land Collection REST IN PEACE Joanne Vanyo, loving sister of Jeanie Detig, Carol Holmes and Joe Vanyo

3 CCD NEWS FIRST COMMUNION Please keep our second graders in your prayers as they prepare for their First Communion. This year First Communions will be all at the 11:00am Mass on Sunday, April 28 th. We have 26 students who will be receiving Communion that day. Each child gets a reserved row and sits with their family. While this is a very special day for our Communicants, it may be added stress for the regular 11:00am Mass crowd who will not get their regular pew. Please keep this in mind when planning what Mass to attend that week. As a reminder, the Masses at Saint Louise are Saturday at 6:00pm and Sunday at 8:00am, 10:00am, Noon, and 4:30pm. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation! YOUTH MINISTRY NEWS SJA YOUTH GROUP will once again be collecting care packages for our Troops this Lenten Season. 4 Prayer Shawl Ministry Next meeting is April 16 and we hope to see you there. All are welcome, we need help even if you don't crochet or knit. Special thanks for the generous donation from the tips at the fish fry - God bless you all. Prayers to all and remember to stop by Tuesday night and say some prayers with us. - Karen Urbanowicz Saint Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do thou, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God, thrust into Hell, Satan and the other evil spirits, who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls. Amen. -Pope Leo XIII Life Enrichment Club Sassy Seniors from 11:00am-1:30pm in the Gathering Place on May 8. Wrap up the year with a fun cabaret style show featuring singing, dancing and comedy skits presented by the young at heart Sassy Seniors. All are welcome, please bring a covered dish and a friend. For more information, please call the parish office at or visit the parish website, Easter Blessing of Families April 21 at Saint Paul Cathedral, 108 North Dithridge Street, Oakland. Each year the shepherds of the Diocese of Pittsburgh welcome families to Saint Paul Cathedral. You are invited! Come and meet Bishop David Zubik and auxiliary bishops William Waltersheid and William Winter. Each bishop will receive families for a greeting, blessing and photograph. (Rumor has it that chocolate may be involved, too!) Families may drop by any time between 2:00pm and 5:00pm. Join us for this beautiful tradition! Blessed Is He Who Comes in the Name of the Lord Today we celebrant the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The crowds waved palm and olive branches as Jesus rode into the city on a colt. They welcomed him as royalty, so moved were their hearts in faith and trust of God. Yet, while Christ s procession into the city is a moment of joy, the joy is fleeting as the coming days lead to the passion and death of Jesus. The central mysteries of our faith that we celebrate this week highlight for us the lengths to which God will go out of love for us. It is appropriate to ask ourselves, then, what lengths will we go to for God. As we journey On Mission for The Church Alive! it is not just our parishes that we should hope to be transformed. We should also hope that our hearts and transformed in love and service of God and others. How are we called to be ambassadors of Christ, coming in his name to share the life and light of God with everyone we meet? On Mission invites us to be representatives of Christ before others that they may know his loving work in the world today. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. PRAYER OF BISHOP ZUBIK FOR ON MISSION FOR THE CHURCH ALIVE Father of Mercy, as we journey On Mission for The Church Alive!, endow us with your gifts of collaboration, courage and compassion. Help us to fulfill the mission of Jesus and His Church through vibrant parishes and effective ministries. Raise up selfless, energetic leaders to serve the Church in fidelity and with care. May we, the Church of Pittsburgh in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Greene, Lawrence and Washington Counties, be sustained and strengthened by your grace. Help us to learn Jesus, to love Jesus and to live Jesus. Hear this prayer and grant it through Jesus Christ our Lord, with the help of our dear Blessed Mother, under the mantle of her love, Amen.

Read, sign and date: Code of Pastoral Conduct and Child Protective Services Law of Pennsylvania. Complete a Virtus (Protecting God s Children) Training Program online or in person (VIRTUS identifies best practices programs designed to help prevent wrongdoing and promote "rightdoing" within religious organizations. The VIRTUS programs empower organizations and people to better control risk and improve the lives of all those who interact with the Church.) Obtain a fingerprint record check (must be obtained every five years) or sign the waiver if applicable (been a resident of Pennsylvania continuously for 10 years, has not been convicted of a Disqualifying Offense ). Attend or take the online Mandated Reporter Training (applies to all clergy, all parish/school employees and volunteers who, on the basis of their role as an integral part of a regularly scheduled program, activity, or services, are responsible for the welfare of a child or have regular contact with children (Athletic Coaches/Volunteers, Catechists, Youth Ministry Volunteers, Scouting Leaders/Volunteers, Chaperones, Childcare Givers, etc.) CHOOSING GODPARENTS: From time to time questions and controversies arise as to who may serve as a Godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism. Therefore, this is a review of the guidelines established by the Catholic Church concerning Godparent eligibility. These regulations should be considered before the parents of a child ask someone to be a Godparent for their son or daughter: The decision as to who should be a Godparent should be based upon who would provide the best example of Catholic living for the child and not merely for reasons of maintaining family harmony. A Godparent is chosen not primarily to honor the Godparent, but for the well-being and faith development of the child. In order to be a Godparent for Baptism, an individual must be a practicing Catholic, at least l6 years of age and have received the Sacraments of Initiation (i.e. Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation). Furthermore, if this person is married, then the marriage must be a valid, sacramental marriage (i.e. one recognized and blessed by the Catholic Church). The potential Godparent must be registered in a Catholic parish and able to obtain from his or her parish priest a letter of eligibility to be a Godparent. Only one Godparent is required by Church law. This Godparent may be a man or a woman. However, if two Godparents are selected (the more common practice), then there must be one man and one woman chosen. In other words, a child cannot have two men or two women as Godparents. In extraordinary situations when two Catholic Godparents cannot be found, then a baptized person who belongs to another Christian denomination (e.g. Methodist, Lutheran, or Presbyterian) may serve as a Christian Witness. However, former Catholics who have left the Catholic Church for another Christian denomination are not permitted to serve as Christian Witnesses. Since Baptism is the initial, foundational Sacrament in the life of a Catholic, great care must be taken in deciding who will serve as a Godparent. The guidelines above are meant to assist parents in making a reasonable and secure decision as to who will fulfill this critical role for their child. Since they are provided by the universal Church and individual priests are not vested with the authority to dispense from them, these guidelines will be strictly followed.
