3 Life Enrichment Club The Saints at the Chapel: Thrilling Tales of History s Holiest Heroes on February 13 from 11:00am-1:30pm in the Gathering Place. Local writer and storyteller, Christopher Reibold, aka, The Saint Story Guy will share stories of some of the saints whose relics are housed at Saint Anthony Chapel, in Troy Hill. The Chapel is home to the world s largest collection of saints relics outside of Rome. He will bring to life the inspiring, miraculous and human stories of these holy heroes. All are welcome, please bring a covered dish and a friend. Hopefully you are working on some shawls/ blankets during this winter to replenish our supply. If you want to drop off at office before our first meeting, office is open Monday through Thursday from 9:00am- 3:00pm. All our welcome to our ministry, we don't discriminate between age or gender all our welcome, doesn't matter if you can crochet or knit, we can use all to help our ministry. God Bless you all - Karen Urbanowicz Music Ministry News Music Ministry Notes If you play a musical instrument and would like to share your talents in leading the hymns on occasion during the 11:00am Mass, please contact Patti at preavel@mystjoan.org Singers needed, especially sopranos, for the adult choir. The adult choir sings at the 9:00am Sunday Mass and rehearses Tuesday evenings at 7:00pm. No audition is required! We are a very welcoming, joyful group! Patti is putting together a bell choir during the season of Lent with the goal of ringing during the 11:00am Mass on Easter Day. If you would be interested please contact Patti at preavel@mystjoan.org. Children s Choir will resume during the months of February, March, April, May. The children will sing once a month at the 11:00am Mass. Rehearsals will be one Wednesday a month from 6:00-7:00pm. Please stay tuned for further information and contact Patti with any questions. 4 The annual Saint Joan of Arc Church Women's Retreat is scheduled for April 26-28, This weekend retreat is very popular and can be sold out early on; so if you are thinking of joining us, please get your reservation in early. If you have already made a retreat at Saint Paul of the Cross Retreat Center, you know what a wonderful experience it can be. If you haven't had the opportunity to join us, please prayerfully consider it this year. It is truly a relaxing and spiritual weekend. This year's theme is I Have Chosen You. If you are unable to make it for the entire weekend, please consider part of the weekend. Friday night is a beautiful talk which prepares you for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and then the opportunity to receive the sacrament. Saturday includes some wonderful conferences as well as workshops and private time to reflect and pray. Sunday is a continuation of all of the above! Boy Scout Troop 4 Accepting New Youth Members Since 1962 we have developed character and leadership skills in the boys of this area. 152 of our members have achieved Scouting s highest honor - Eagle Scout. The Troop 4 program focuses on Catholic values. We are accepting new 5th and 6th grade members on Monday, February 25 at 7:30pm in the lower level of the LeGras Parish Center which is located at Saint Louise de Marillac, 320 McMurray Road in Upper St. Clair. 5 CHOOSING GODPARENTS: From time to time questions and controversies arise as to who may serve as a Godparent for the Sacrament of Baptism. Therefore, this is a review of the guidelines established by the Catholic Church concerning Godparent eligibility. These regulations should be considered before the parents of a child ask someone to be a Godparent for their son or daughter: The decision as to who should be a Godparent should be based upon who would provide the best example of Catholic living for the child and not merely for reasons of maintaining family harmony. A Godparent is chosen not primarily to honor the Godparent, but for the well-being and faith development of the child. In order to be a Godparent for Baptism, an individual must be a practicing Catholic, at least l6 years of age and have received the Sacraments of Initiation (i.e. Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation). Furthermore, if this person is married, then the marriage must be a valid, sacramental marriage (i.e. one recognized and blessed by the Catholic Church). The potential Godparent must be registered in a Catholic parish and able to obtain from his or her parish priest a letter of eligibility to be a Godparent. Only one Godparent is required by Church law. This Godparent may be a man or a woman. However, if two Godparents are selected (the more common practice), then there must be one man and one woman chosen. In other words, a child cannot have two men or two women as Godparents. In extraordinary situations when two Catholic Godparents cannot be found, then a baptized person who belongs to another Christian denomination (e.g. Methodist, Lutheran, or Presbyterian) may serve as a Christian Witness. However, former Catholics who have left the Catholic Church for another Christian denomination are not permitted to serve as Christian Witnesses. Since Baptism is the initial, foundational Sacrament in the life of a Catholic, great care must be taken in deciding who will serve as a Godparent. The guidelines above are meant to assist parents in making a reasonable and secure decision as to who will fulfill this critical role for their child. Since they are provided by the universal Church and individual priests are not vested with the authority to dispense from them, these guidelines will be strictly followed. The Annual White Mass recognizing those in the medical professions will be celebrated by Bishop David Zubik at Saint Paul Cathedral on Sunday, February 10 at Noon. All are welcome to attend, including all healthcare professionals. A reception sponsored by the Catholic Medical Association will follow immediately afterwards. No registration is required. Addiction Recovery Ministry will begin with an anointing Mass for those in recovery on Sunday, February 10, 2019 at 2:30pm at Saint Paul Cathedral. Bishop David Zubik will be the principal celebrant. League play begins Friday, May 3 teeing off anytime from 3:00pm-6:00pm (whenever you can get there) and runs through September 13. Members are encouraged but are NOT required to play every week. Following the round, members are encouraged to go to LeGras Hall at Saint Louise for a meal and share fellowship with Parish League members. Our first 2019 Membership meeting for existing and new members will be held on March 15 at 7:30pm in the Saint Louise school cafeteria. All men in the Parish, age 21 and over, are invited to attend the meeting to learn more about joining the League, share fellowship with Parish league members and have some drinks and snacks. The Nocturnal Adoration Society of Saint Louise de Marillac invites Saint Joan of Arc parishioners to join our organization. Once a month, our members respond to Christ s invitation to keep watch with him for one-hour. In today s Gospel we find Jesus in the synagogue in Nazareth, his hometown. He proclaims that he is the anointed one of God and that he has come to renew the world in fulfillment of what the prophets foretold. The people are amazed by his words, but they also question him. They know him as the son of Joseph, the carpenter. To them he is a simple man from a simple family. While they are attracted by the words that he speaks they wonder how he could possibly do the amazing things that he speaks of. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to share his life and love with everyone we meet. Often times we feel called as missionaries to help those in need in other parts of our city, throughout our country and even halfway across the world! Yet, sometimes we can feel most challenged in proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel in our hometown or home parish. We wonder how we could possibly be effective witness of Jesus to the people who know our weaknesses and who have seen us at our less than best. Be confident! This is the exact witness that the world needs, that God calls us in our imperfection to set the world on fire with his love that is already burning in our hearts.
