1 THE ANNUNCIATION VOLUME XXVIIII No. 3 March 2012 Saint Mary s Church 30 Macon Avenue Asheville, North Carolina

2 THE ANNUNCIATION - March St. Mary s Episcopal Church, Asheville, NC FROM THE RECTOR Father Brent Norris As some of you know we have a new puppy at our house. She is a rescue dog whose sire was a wayfaring stranger. There is really no way of knowing how large she will eventually get. At only three months she was able to get her elbows over the 26 fence that served quite well for the smaller dogs that we have had. So, yesterday I spent the day putting up a new, taller fence. The problem with the taller fence was that the gaps between the posts were large enough for the Yorkie to walk through. So, a vinyl wire fence had to be installed on the larger fence. Each dog had different requirements, but they both needed a fence in which to play safe from traffic. The dogs seem to like their new fence. They have sniffed around the border and checked out the workmanship. By late afternoon yesterday they were sleeping in a patch of sunlight right in the middle of the yard. They felt comfortable and safe. The Psalmist writes: My boundaries enclose a pleasant land (Ps. 16:6). Boundaries are good things. They establish limits inside which one is protected. Boundaries help us stay safe by keeping us from wandering off where we shouldn t and getting caught up in things which we have no business doing. Boundaries help us live with ourselves and with others. In God s love for us God has provided us with boundaries. God has set the limits of how far we can go and what we can do. Some of the elements of those boundaries are found in the 10 Commandments which are sort of like posts in a fence. Other elements are found in Jesus reiteration of the greatest law. You shall love the Lord you God with all your heart, mind and strength and you shall love your neighbor as yourself. These limits to our behavior are meant to protect us from ourselves and to protect us from each other. In the Lenten season we are to examine our lives to see where we have crossed the boundaries that God has set for us. We are to amend our lives so that we can see that inside those boundaries there is a pleasant land full of grace and love in which all our needs are met and in which we can live fully and joyfully. Pease and blessings, OPPORTUNITIES FOR WORSHIP AND PRAYER IN LENT Daily Mass at St. Mary s Tuesdays Wednesdays Fridays Wednesdays Rosary Evensong at St. Mark s Lutheran (10 North Liberty Street) Fridays Stations of the Cross at St. Eugene (72 Culvern Street) 5:30 pm 7:30 am 12:05 pm 6:00 pm 7:00 pm 3:30 pm

4 HOLY WEEK SERVICES The Holy Triduum of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter is the first week of April. Some of our most cherished traditions happen during these days including the Maundy Thursday Agape Meal and the ecumenical Stations of the Cross on Good Friday and the Easter Vigil Break-fast Feast. Help is needed to make these observances happen. Sign up sheets to help set up and clean up for the Agape Meal and Easter Break-fast Feast are located on the table at the rear of the nave. 5 SYMPATHY TO Debbie Tanis on the death of her father, Joseph Tanis, on February 15, Leslie Johnson on the death of his brother, Edwin (Eddie) Johnson, on February 23, FROM THE PARISH REGISTER LETTER OF TRANSFER: John Nash transferring from St. Mary s to St. John s, Johnson City, TN FROM YOUR DEACON The Rev d Deacon Gary Kovach February proved to be quite a month! We made it through the month with very little, if any, snow or ice. In fact, we had some spring-like temperatures that allowed me to get in some yard work in preparation for spring. We had some powerfully Holy Ash Wednesday services in preparation for Lent. And, we had a great Newcomers Luncheon welcoming new members into the family at St. Mary s. These are just a few of the things that made February a very good month! But, what really stands out in my mind is the week we spent hosting the Room In The Inn shelter for women the week of the 5th through the 12th. Though it was a quick turn around, since we and two other congregations were just hosts in December, we pulled it all together to experience another fabulous week of ministry! True ministry is never done with the expectation of reward or praise; but, I can t help telling you of the response of the homeless women who were our guests. Their words were, We love coming to St. Mary s because of how welcomed and loved we are made to feel here. P.S. the food isn t too shabby either! Personally, the most heart-warming thing for me was the response of other congregations in our community when they became aware that we were a little short on volunteers. Our official partners are, as always, Congregation Beth HaTephila and St. Mark s Lutheran. But, responding to the invitation to help were a couple from Temple Beth Israel, friends from Mother Grove Goddess Temple, and friends from The Ethical Society of Asheville. To share the same space with folks from multiple faith communities, as well as a group of homeless women, is very much a learning experience. I once again learn just how blessed I am to be a small part of the family known as St. Mary s. Kudos to Michael Ashmore for again coordinating all the volunteers to make the week such a success. (The patience of Job comes to mind!) May everyone know a blessed and Holy Lent. Your servant in Christ, Deacon Gary
