1 THE ANNUNCIATION VOLUME XXX No. 1 January 2014 Saint Mary s Church 337 Charlotte Street Asheville, North Carolina

2 THE ANNUNCIATION - January St. Mary s Episcopal Church, Asheville, NC FROM THE RECTOR Father Brent Norris It is very common at the New Year to spend some time reflecting on the year that is past and making plans for the coming year. It is a good practice to examine one s life and see if it is headed in the right direction, to make resolutions about how to correct any misdirection and to keep it going in a healthy way. We do that individually and as communities, including churches. At our Diocesan Convention this past November our Bishop asked us to consider six questions to help form the direction of our life as a diocese in the coming year. The questions were thought provoking, so much so that I decided to share them with our congregation at our Annual Meeting. I give you those same questions, now-recast, as intentional questions, and ask you prayerfully to consider them in your New Year s reflections. See if you can come up with concrete answers as opposed to general statements. You might write down your answers/resolutions and keep them in your Bible or Prayer Book so that you see them often as part of your prayer life. Maybe even post a copy on your refrigerator. I invite you to see them as goals not just for strengthening your personal life but also the life of our community. As you think about your daily life in 2014: How will you live out your faith with your money? How will others know that you love the Lord? What are you going to do to help the poor? How are you going to connect with fellow Christians for the common good? Will you say your prayers every day? What will you do to grow in your understanding of your faith and tradition? The scriptures teach us that it does not yet appear what we shall be (1 John 3:2). At the end of 2014 we will not be the same as we were this week. The choices we make between then and now are important. Let us choose wisely. Peace and blessings, INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURE As we move through the winter season the likelihood of snow and/or ice becomes greater. If there is a question about whether or not services have been cancelled at St. Mary s, simply call the church office number ( ). The message on the answering machine will tell you what you need to know. You may also check our facebook page at St. Mary s Episcopal Church Asheville, NC or the closing notices on WLOS. The decision about cancelling the 8:00 am service will be made by 7:00 am. The decision about cancelling Sunday school and the 11:00 am service will be made by 9:00 am. Decisions about daily services will be made by 3:30 pm. The condition of roads can vary a great deal from one part of Asheville to another, not to mention our outlying towns. When in doubt opt for safety. Take out your BCP, read the service and scriptures appointed for the day, and make a spiritual communion in your heart.

4 FROM THE PARISH REGISTER BURIAL: Robert (Bob) Wysong departed this life on December 4, His Requiem Mass and burial were at St. Mary s Saturday, December 7, 2013 LETTER OF TRANSFER: Pat Ziebell has transferred to All Saints Anglican Church, Mills River, NC MINISTRY FAIR Sunday, January 12, is the Feast of the Baptism of Our Lord. It is one of the days in the Book of Common Prayer recommended for baptism and if there are no baptisms for the Renewal of Baptismal Vows. We are reminded in those vows that by virtue of our baptism we are each called to ministry on God s behalf in the church. The life and work of St. Mary s parish does not happen without the hands-on ministries of her members. It is the calling and privilege of each baptized person to be a part of the ministry of the church. As part of our celebration of the Baptism of Our Lord and our baptisms on January 12 th we will have a Ministry Fair where displays and information about the various organizations, groups and activities in our parish will be available and each of us will be given the opportunity to sign up and to make our commitment to the work of St. Mary s during the coming year. If you have an idea for a new ministry please contact the Rector to be sure information about it is available on the 12 th. CHRISTMAS THANKS Many thanks to Roxanne Frue and all who helped decorate the Church for Christmas. To Paul Blankenship and his helpers for managing the Christmas Pageant. And to the Choir and Handbells and Virginia McKnight for their beautiful music. And to the Acolytes, Readers and Altar Guild for their service. And to Mary Alice Nard for running about a bazillion bulletins. ADVENT REREDOS We thank Roxanne Frue, Roger Watson and Tom Naomi for making and installing the beautiful Advent reredos. Well done! CUBA CONNECTION UPDATE By late January all the information from the prospective companion congregations in Cuba should be ready to be compiled and printed. Using that material we will take some time to pray and discern which, if any, of these congregations we might join in a companion relationship.

5 ECUMENICAL OUTREACH MINISTRY St. Mary s, and her ecumenical partners (St. Mark s Lutheran, St. Paul s Methodist and St. Eugene Catholic), are looking for ways to make a difference in our own neighborhood. Each congregation is being asked to provide three people who will be a part of team that will identify needs and suggest ways that those needs can be met. If you want to be part of St. Mary s team please contact the Rector. The first meeting of the team will be Sunday, January 19, at 1:00, at St. Paul s. Episcopal Church Women of St. Mary s December 2013 Activities Many thanks to Linda West for organizing our Steadfast House Christmas Giving Activity. Everyone at St. Mary s was quite generous in their giving - beautiful baby and children s clothes, diapers, blankets, and much more! Thank you, people!!! If you didn t have a chance to participate, be sure to put it on your to-do-list for this year. By now, everyone has lit their 3 purple/blue and 1 rose candle. It s a wonderful way to reflect upon the Advent Season. Oh, yes - you heard it right! The ECW ladies headed off to Hendersonville for a day of light shopping and camaraderie! Little did we know that the Hendersonville Holiday Parade was planned just for us!!! It was a fun and relaxing day - viewing the hometown parade was an unexpected delight!
