1 THE ANNUNCIATION VOLUME XXXIII No. 8 August 2017 Saint Mary s Church 337 Charlotte Street Asheville, North Carolina

2 THE ANNUNCIATION - August St. Mary s Episcopal Church, Asheville, NC FROM THE RECTOR Father Brent Norris Back in May I scheduled some vacation days for the end of June. I had planned a mostly staycation with yard projects and an occasional trip to Lake Powatan. Then the mail came and it brought a jury summons for the middle of my second vacation week. Plenty of people offered suggestions about how to get out of serving. I could not imagine even trying. Serving may be inconvenient but it really isn t that much of a hardship. Serving on a jury is both an obligation and privilege. It is part of being a citizen of this nation. This is my country therefore I need to be willing to be a part of its life. The same holds true for families and for social institutions like churches. Membership has its privileges and obligations. In addition to financially supporting the congregation with an annual pledge, there are always things that simply need to be done to keep the church functioning. Some of these jobs are part of the responsibilities of the clergy. Most are the responsibility of the lay members. Right now in this congregation we are in need of people who are willing to: serve on the Vestry, organize funeral receptions, serve as acolytes and on the Altar Guild, and sing in the choir. The catechism of the Church teachers that as part of their ministry lay persons are expected to take their place in the life, worship, and governance of the Church (BCP p. 855). Many of us do just that, in fact many of us are doing multiple things, which can lead to burnout. For the Church to be at its most healthy, we need all of our members to be part of the work that we do. How can you claim your place in the life of this parish? What task, what obligation and privilege can you take up for the health and wellbeing of St. Mary s? WELCOME REVDA. MARIANELA DE LA PAZ COT The Rev. Marianela de la Paz Cot, who is the priest at our companion parish in Limonar, Cuba will be visiting St. Mary s August 3 through 6. She will be with us for both services on August 6 th, and we will welcome her with a reception at coffee hour on that day. WELCOME TO OUR NEW ORGANIST/CHOIR DIRECTOR. We welcome Joel Rogers as our new Organist/Choir Director. Joel comes to us from Grace Church Asheville where he was Director of Music, which included directing choirs but not playing organ, which is something that Joel missed. He has previously served parishes in California and Tennessee. Joel s secular employment is at Mars Hill University where he is Chair of the Theatre Arts Department and Director of the Musical Theatre program. Joel s first Sunday with us will be August 20 th. We thank Dr. Vance Reese for his able assistance to us as our interim.

3 PATRONAL FEAST The annual celebration of our Patron Feast. Our Holy Mother Mary, will be Sunday, August 13 th. Please gather at the Wayside Shrine for the procession to the Church at 9:45 am. Following the service we will have lunch in Emmaus Hall. The Church will provide fried chicken, a vegetarian entrée and drinks. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share. We also need two people to be litter bearers for the statue. If you can help with this please tell the Rector. The 8:00 am Mass will be as usual that day. ITS A WEDDING! On Sunday, August 20 th, at the service Christine Longoria and Lewis Sorrells will be united in the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony. It is not often that we have the opportunity to celebrate a wedding as part of the regular Sunday service so this promises to be a memorable and happy event. WELCOME BISHOP JOSÉ MCLAUGHLIN When our new bishop, the Right Rev. José McLaughlin, was ordained he decided that he wanted to visit every parish in the diocese at a time other than what was scheduled for his official Visitation. He wants to get to know his parishes in a more personal way than is possible if he is only at a parish for a service of Confirmation. So far his On the Road with the Bishop tour is a great success. Our turn is coming up. Bishop José will visit us on Thursday, August 31. There is no service, but there will be time of fellowship and discussion where we get to know each other. Plans for the evening are still in progress and we will let you know more as the date approaches. ACOLYTE APPRECIATION TRIP TO DOLLYWOOD The annual acolyte appreciation trip to Dollywood is Saturday, September 9th. If you serve at the Altar you are invited. Please let Fr. Brent know by August 31 st, if you are going (rector@stmaryasheville.org). We will leave St. Mary s at 8:00 am on Saturday and return by 9:00 pm. LOVING NEIGHBORS For several years people from St. Mary s have been working with our brothers and sisters from St. Eugene, St. Mark s and St. Paul s on a project to open a literacy based pre-school for children living in poverty. We are finally almost there. St. Mark s, which will host the program, has done a capital campaign to provide the needed space for the program. We have done several pilot programs to test out the curriculum. It is expected that we will be opening in the fall of next year. Keep an ear open for that happy event.

4 ST. MARY S MARKET PLACE TEAM JUNE 2017 Our St. Mary s team gave significant leadership to our Ecumenical Market Place Bible School this summer. Supporting our 10 children who attended, 7 volunteers from our Team gave service. Special thanks to all of them. Catherine Powell experienced her first year at Market Place and offered leadership as a Tribal Parent as well as serving on the Planning Committee giving significant input as the only clergy voice on the committee. Lynn Bullock, faithful over the years, once again served as a Tribal Parent and in the much valued role as Nurse in Residence. This year Hope Hunter moved through the ranks as childhood participant, teen volunteer and now as a Tribal Parent. Congratulations! Likewise John Hunter having experienced most every aspect of Market Place activities over all the years was a prized all purpose volunteer who could fill in where ever needed with a moment s notice. We missed Sarah but pleased that she had a good summer job keeping her away. Once again Michael Davis helped to coordinate the Shops with skill and creativity, and offered transportation to Jacob and Olivia Tally enabling them to be able to attend. Meredith Stanley and Bette Strimple offered their skills at home preparing some of the craft items. Harry Woggon served in the Shops, and I assisted again this year with behind the scene Synagogue logistics. Everyone was delighted to have our friend Vance Reese return this year in the role of the Synagogue Rabbi. Now, if the children wonder why the Synagogue Rabbi is following them to church for Sunday worship at St. Mary s, help them give him a warm welcome as our Interim Organist and Choir Director. And as always we are exceedingly grateful for First Presbyterian Church sharing their facilities, and for the remarkable leadership and coordination of Nancy McNeil and her staff. Genelda Woggon 7/8/ FLOWER SIGN-UP The following Sunday are available for flowers at the Altar: September 3 September 10 September 17 September 24 Please call the parish office ( ) or (mail@stmarysasheville.org) to donate the flowers either in memory of loved ones or in thanksgiving. Your designation will be remembered during the prayers at each Mass on that Sunday. VESTRY MEMBERS In the Episcopal tradition the Vestry is the governing body of the church. It consists of lay persons who serve a set term of service, normally a three year term. Due to circumstance St. Mary s currently only has six Vestry members instead of the usual nine which means that at the Annual Meeting of the Parish in November we need to fill six seats. (Three for three year terms and three for two year terms.) The canonical qualifications to serve on Vestry are: 16 years of age or older, confirmed, a giver of record and a regular participant in the worship of the Church. Please consider stepping forward to serve on this important ministry. Nominations must be given in writing to the Rector and the person you nominate has to have agreed to serve. SOUTHERN PROPERTY UPDATE We finally have cleared the legal hurdles to take full ownership of the house that Fr. Southern left to St. Mary s in his will. The final task was to get the property insured so that we can begin getting it cleaned up and ready to sell. Deanna Stone and Susan Henry are heading up this task and we all need to thank them for their willingness to take this on. In the next few weeks they will be contacting the parish about work days and plans for the contents of the house. Please let them know that you are willing to help.
