THE CHRIST CHURCH CONNECTION The Newspaper of the Mother Church of the Dakotas From the Interim Rector Fr. Tim Fountain Three Ideas to Test Drive I was in the Yankton HyVee and ran into three folks I d worked with at the #6 store in Sioux Falls. Thinking of that place reminded me how hard work made it to get to church on Sunday, and that provoked IDEA NUMBER ONE. I would like to offer a short midweek service, maybe during the Wednesday lunch hour. I m looking for feedback: Is that a good day and time? Should I offer it here at the church or look for a community location? (In other words, should I try to use it as a way to reach working folks beyond the church walls?) When to launch? Is there a desire for it now or should we aim for a date after Labor Day? As I get to know you and also other folks around town, I m meeting plenty of animal lovers. That brings up IDEA NUMBER TWO. I d like to offer a Blessing of the Animals on or around St. Francis Day, October 4th. I need feedback on this, too: October 4th is a Thursday. Should we use that, or aim for the weekend (Sat. Oct. 6 or Sun. Oct. 7)? Should we hold it on the church lawn, or should we tempt the weather and make it a public offering some place like the Meridian Bridge or Riverside Park? Might be fun to put together a team to find/reserve a space and generate awareness around town. Elsewhere in this newsletter is a call for folks to help teach Sunday School in the fall. Which gets me thinking about the kids and IDEA NUMBER THREE. I would like to offer a Blessing of the Backpacks during the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, August 19th. This is a short prayer over the students on the Sunday before school starts up. They can bring backpacks, but don t take it too literally it s really about blessing the kids. Ideas include: Making every effort to get all of the kids to show up. Inviting friends to church that day for a blessing on their upcoming school year. Making some effort to connect the event with the wrap up of Riverboat Days? Engaging in an ingathering of school supplies for donation to families in need? Oh, yeah, I m full of ideas. But they will just stay on this page without your engagement of them. I need your input and, God willing, your involvement in any of these that come to be. Thanks for taking some time to think, pray and do. Timothy+ July & August 2018

Search Committee Report THANK YOU! The Search Committee is very grateful to and thankful for all of those who took the time to come and participate in the meetings that were held at the church on Wednesday, June 20th and Sunday, June 24th. There were a total of thirty-one participants, seven of whom participated in both meetings. THE MEETINGS The purpose of these meetings was to help the Search Committee to determine whether to seek a fulltime rector, half-time rector, or no rector (relying on an occasional supply priest to conduct Eucharistic services). It is important to note that all those who participated voiced their thoughts and opinions on this topic. During the course of these meetings, the letter sent by the Search Committee explaining the congregation s current financial situation and the cost of funding a full time or half time rector was discussed. The congregational survey was also reviewed with regard to how respondents to that survey viewed the congregation as largely being a welcoming and inclusive congregation that accepts people where they are at and what traits were most mentioned with regard to seeking a rector The top three being a preacher, a pastor, and a leader. As most are aware, our plate offerings and pledges do not come anywhere near to meeting the budgetary needs of this congregation. At the current level of financial support, selecting a full time priest would necessitate the Vestry to continue utilizing interest income from the congregation s reserved and restricted funds. To make a firm and honest commitment to a candidate applying for a full time position would necessitate willingness on the congregation s part to access the church s investment principals and restricted funds in order to support a full time rector; that is, should the financial level of support by the congregation remains as it is. DISCUSSION AND CONSENSUS To get into this discussion a scenario was offered in which the participants were asked, given our current financial situation, what they would advise the Vestry to do should a natural disaster destroy our beautiful church Would they consider rebuilding and why? The response was an instantaneous, Yes, of course. We re a family. The church is more than a building. It s the people that make the church. When broadening this discussion to what type of rector should be considered, there was a consensus of those present that the committee should seek a full time rector. When specifically asked if those present would be open to using the church s financial reserves if necessary in order to do so, the answers were, Yes. God is our source. God will provide. SEEKING A FULL TIME RECTOR These meetings have provided the Search Committee with a clear objective to seek a full time rector for our congregation. The committee will now enter in the phase of building the church s profile which will be submitted to the diocese for review and posted on the national church s website to seek candidates for the position of a full time rector. Once everything is in order and the submission made, we wait to hear from the diocese if there are candidates for the committee to consider. IN THE MEANTIME In the meantime, waiting doesn t mean sitting around and twiddling our thumbs. In the meantime, once the profile is finished the Search Committee work begins on preparing for the review and interview process of potential candidates. In the meantime, there s a lot of work to be done by the congregation as a whole. Out of these meetings came other thoughts and important discussions on defining who we are, what our mission is, building ourselves up as a congregation, bringing us together, actively welcoming people into our doors, and getting the word out that we re here and willing to serve people where they are at. In the meantime, we are blessed to have Fr. Tim as our interim rector. He is being helpful in identifying our mission, as well as addressing our needs as a congregation. Fr. Tim is an excellent exemplar

Search Committee Report (Con t) of what we all need to do in bringing people back, in bringing people in, and in helping us grow as a congregation through the love of Christ. Thank you Fr. Tim. Kathy Grow stated that Mirabile has learned over one hundred pieces of music since its inception. As Kathy Grow explained All (the music) is democratically chose! We are together because WE LOVE TO SING! This is Mirabile s third time performing at one of our services. In the meantime, the Search Committee invites you to talk to us as individuals regarding any concerns you have with this process and any suggestions you may with regard to selecting a candidate. Members of the Search Committee are: Gert Boyles, Shann Doerr, Chris Herrick, John Keys, Chris Luke, Dick Unruh, and Norm Wright. In the meantime, wouldn t it be nice if, by the time the congregation selects a new rector, the pews in this church would be full every Sunday. It s a dream, but isn t it a dream worth trying to make a reality? On behalf of the Search Committee, Norm Wright, Co-chair Mirabile Once again, we are delighted to have as our guest, the choral group, Mirabile, offer their voices and musical talents during our regular 10:00 AM Sunday Eucharist on July 15. If you do not know who Mirabile is, I asked Kathy Grow, a former Christ Church choir director to provide some background. Mirabile is Mary Pat Bierle, Kathy Grow, Jo Ann Lambertz, Celia Miner, Jennifer Powell, Lea Ann Schramm, Linda Stevens, and Janine Tramp. Mirabile began in the summer of 2011 with four women from Yankton United Church of Christ and later expanded to its present number which includes Jo Ann Lambertz, a member of Christ Episcopal. Since that time, Mirabile has performed more than seventy times sharing their music in nursing homes, assisted living facilities, senior center. They have also performed at Trinity Lutheran s Bach s Lunch in 2015 and will do so this year on Thursday, December 6 with a program tentatively titled, A Ceremony of British Carols.

YHS Girls State Delegates Here are Yankton High School 11th grade girls selected for the 72nd annual American Legion Auxillary South Dakota Girls State at University of South Dakota, Vermillion May 28 June 2. Front row, from left: American Legion Representatives Gladys Johnson, Gert Boyles and Marlys List; second row: Zoie Lee Marcotte, Olivia Liebig, Madison Schaefer and Perla Chavez; third row: Miranda Schulte, Olivia Warriner, Erin McCarthy and Emily Kolker; fourth row: Noel Kusek, Caitlyn Bargstadt, Megan Haselhorst and Sophia Vyborny; fifth row: Morgan Rodig, Reagan Kolberg, Tia Vlasman and Baylee Kenney. Warrington Turner was the daughter of Sgt. Willian Warrington, who had served in both the Revolutionary War and the War of His service in the revolution included being a member of Gen. George Washington s Elite Corps of Life Guards, and is even credited in saving Washington s life after catching a man attempting to poison Washington s drink. Sgt. Warrington s grave is located in Ostrander, Ohio. DAR Thursday morning saw the Daniel Newcomb Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) completing a sentimental task. In April, as part of the 104th conference of the South Dakota DAR in Yankton, members had planned to lay a wreath at the grave of Real Daughter Charlotte Warrington Turner. Due to inclement weather, however, the plans were scrapped. Thursday, seven members of the Daniel Newcomb Chapter turned out to place the red, white and blue handkerchief wreath on the grave and remember the woman buried there. Warrington Turner was born Dec. 31, 1836 in Delaware County, Ohio, to Warrington and his fourth wife. She married Albert Turner in 1854 and had two daughters. She came to the Dakota Territory in 1885 and settled on the Indian Reservation at Medicine Creek. She moved to Rapid City two years later and remained there until her passing on March 15, Her grave and DAR marker can be found at the Yankton Cemetery. According to Daniel Newcomb Chapter Regent Gert Boyles, Warrington Turner s grave marker is one of four others also belonging to Real Daughters in South Dakota. (Their lineage) can be hard to prove because some of those soldiers didn t come home from the war, Boyles explained. All members of the DAR have evidence that they are direct descendants of men who either fought or provided assistance in the Revolutionary War.

DAR (Con t) (Some people) provided clothing, horses, food or lodging because back then, there wasn t a nice hotel to go to, DAR member Luann Oullette said. During the wreath-laying ceremony, Boyles read from the DAR memorial handbook to commemorate Warrington Turner and others like her. Gary Conradi took a nice pic of Fr.. Tim blasted by the wind at the June 14th ceremony honoring Governor William McMaster. Matt Michels was the MC of the event, held at the Meridian Bridge where there s now a plaque honoring McMaster, SD s 10th Governor. They are not dead in the hearts of those they leave behind, she read. Eternal life is theirs throughout the years and time declares their immortality. We will always remember daughters whose lives we shared and who walk with us no more. Article shared by P&D Newspaper. Descendants Descendants of South Dakota s 10th Governor, William H. McMaster, get an historical tour of his family s church from parishioner Gert Boyles. They were able to see the McMaster Family entry in the church s records. Church Members At The PEO Convention I would like to share with the church congregation a little bit of news about Gert Boyles and MARY ANN Anderson. We had the P.E.O. State Convention in Sioux Falls, SD June 14, 15, I would like to share some things about Gert and Mary Ann. Gert was honored as a 60 year member of P.E.O. and Mary Ann was honored as a 65 year member of P.E.O. Elloween Gert Boyles, Chapter AS, Yankton Her early childhood was spent on a farm north of Howard, SD with her parents and one younger brother. After graduation from high school she entered Sioux Valley Hospital School of Nursing and graduated in She began employment that fall at the Human Service Center for the Mentally Ill in Yankton. In 1954, she married E. Wallace Boyles. He was born and raised

Church Members At The PEO Convention (Con t) in Yankton and they spent 60 years, 11 months of marriage in their favorite area. They had four children, five grandchildren and twin great grands. She continues with her interests in P.E.O., church, genealogy, and DAR. Gert has been trying (not very successfully) to downsize her home and life. She is still trying to adjust to the computer-website searches for instructions and information. Gert and her P.E.O. sisters treasure the 60 years they have had together. She is so grateful for all the love and caring with family, friends, and sisters. Growing up with one brother, she never anticipated having so many sisters. On top of P.E.O., Gert has been a long time member of this church. She has put endless hours into taking care of this church and participates in everything she can do. We are thankful to have Gert and appreciate all that she does for our church too. Mary Ann Anderson, Chapter BT, Yankton County Mary Ann is also a member of our church. She not only has been a member of P.E.O. for 65 years, but also she has been a part of Christ Church for many years too. Mary Ann was initiated into her sister s chapter while they were in college. She has enjoyed being a member of P.E.O. for 65 wonderful years. She has held every office in her first Chapter AS and then her second Chapter BT, in which she is still a member. Her mother s chapter was AS and this is the chapter that Mary Ann was first initiated into when joining. When the chapter became so large, she and her mother became charter members of Chapter BT along with six other members. P.E.O. in an organization where she has met many people she never would have otherwise known. She enjoys her Chapter BT and is active taking care of the younger members, like myself, Liz Lynch. Mary Ann is very supportive in all that her chapter does within our community. Submitted by Liz Lynch Lay Eucharistic Visitors Training Lay Eucharistic Visitors (LEVs) are licensed by the Bishop to bring Holy Communion to the sick and shut ins, in order to extend the embrace of the whole congregation. LEVs are to be trained and supervised by local clergy on the Bishop s behalf. I am so pleased that a number of Christ Church s people go out visiting those who can t make it to services here. I would like to train those who are willing to be licensed as LEVs, so that you can provide the sacramental presence of Christ to our brothers and sisters along with your own warmth and kindness. If you are interested in this important ministry, please let me know. Once names are gathered, I will work with Deacon John to set up the training, which will likely be one session of two hours (unless you ask lots of questions the overtime is on you!) Looking forward to sharing ministry with you, Fr. Tim Fountain Interim Rector Banquet This is an early reminder that Christ Episcopal Church will once again have the privilege to serve the Banquet on Thursday, September 13, The Banquet is held on each Thursday and 2 Tuesdays a month at the United Church of Christ. It s mission is to provide a hot meal and fellowship to anyone in the community. We will need volunteers to set up, serve, and clean up. In addition, we will need bars/cookies for dessert and monetary donations to help purchase the main dish. Each year we have been blessed to have many volunteers and sufficient funds to provide fellowship and a meal for people. Reminders will be put in the bulletin and sign up sheets for work times will be set out as we get nearer to the date. Your donation for the Banquet can be given to Dick Unruh or placed in the collection plate with a note that it is for the Banquet. Thank you in advance for the generosity you so willingly provide to Christ Church and the Yankton community.

needed SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS AND ASSISTANTS FOR THIS COMING YEAR Christ Episcopal Church is looking for volunteers to teach Sunday School this coming year. We thought we could try the approach we used a few years ago in which volunteers could sign up for 1 or 2 months during the year (September 2018 May 2019) as the Teacher and 1 or 2 months as the Assistant Teacher. For example, you could sign up for September as a Teacher Assistant, then you could sign up to be the Teacher in October. You are more than welcome to sign up for more than one month. We need a teacher and an assistant each Sunday most of the time, which makes the class go smoother and easier when we have a wide age-range or a large number of children in class. You will receive a Children s Bulletin to work from, which will be sent to you a week ahead of time via so that you can prepare. We are also looking for someone to plan the Children s Christmas Pageant in December. The Sign-up Sheet will be located in the narthex of the Church as you enter for the next two months. Working with the children is very rewarding. Please consider volunteering. Thanks! 9 Thank You We are adding a new feature to the monthly newsletter, our Thank You column. So many of Christ Church s people do so many things that make our church family more welcoming and supportive of members and visitors. Many of these take place outside of our Sunday gatherings. This is not run by the Priest or Church Office, but by your own affirmations. If you see an unsung hero in action, please let the Church Office know! Leave a note, voice mail or . Tell us WHO should have a special thank you and WHAT they did, and we ll recognize them in an upcoming newsletter. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works (Hebrews 10:24) +++ To Gert Boyles for providing a tour of the church to the descendants of Governor William McMaster on June 14 while in town for the commemoration of the late governor; to Norm Wright for providing the Holy mood - organ music during the tour; and to Steve Adamson for sweeping the front steps before they arrived. 12 Marian s Peanut Brittle A memorial was held at the Church for Marian Gunderson on June 23. Marian was considered a Master of Peanut Brittle. Some of you may have had an opportunity to enjoy a bit of her brittle. The following recipe is offered to the church from the Gunderson Family: By trail and error, Mom taught herself to make the best peanut brittle in the world. For Christmas in July at Christ Church in Yankton, Mom s peanut brittle was a best seller. She ordered 50 pounds of premium peanuts annually. When the weather got cold, she finished batch after batch to be delivered in late November to customers. Friends and family always had plenty to enjoy as well. Our family shares her recipe here: The secret? Be ready to cook until peanuts are truly golden-brown, and the molten liquid is golden, almost brown and really close to burning. Then hustle to spread the poured brittle very thinly using forks daubed in butter. It takes practice, but Marian showed it could be done. Generous 2 cups large or 3 cups medium raw Spanish peanuts 2 cups sugar 1 cup white Karo Syrup ½ cup hot water 1 tsp. vanilla 1 heaping tbsp. butter ½ tsp. salt 1 rounded tsp. baking soda Prepare 3 or 4 baking sheets very well buttered of generous coating of cooking spray spread with a paper towel to ensure even coverage. Set aside. If peanuts have been refrigerated or frozen, allow to warm to room temperature. In heavy medium saucepan with handle, stir together sugar, syrup, and hot water. Bring to a boil on high, stirring often, until mixture spins a fine thread or reaches 250 o F on a candy thermometer. Add peanuts and cook, stirring almost continuously. This takes about 10 minutes. During the last 5 minutes, stir in vanilla and mix well. Stir in butter and mix well. Stir in salt and mix well. Continue stirring above 320 o F until peanuts are dark golden brown. Have rounded teaspoon of baking soda measured and ready to stir in when mixture has reached desired stage. Stir in soda thoroughly. Pour quickly onto prepared pans, about equal amounts on each pan. Smooth mixture as thin as possible with back of stirring spoon. Switch to a table fork dipped in butter and continue to pull mixture to make the layer as thin as possible. Allow to cool completely. Break into pieces and store in an airtight container. Makes about 1¾ pounds peanut brittle.
