1 My Dear Family in Christ, Here s a little story that you may know.once upon a time in a rather large city there were some good-hearted folks who were concerned about the hungry, the lonely and other people in need that lived in the city. What to do? They decided that they would offer them hospitality and a nutritious meal. They wondered if it should be limited in some way to the hungriest among them to those with the greatest need but how to tell? They decided that the best thing would be to offer this meal in friendship to all to anyone who for whatever reason wanted to come. It would be an expression of God s grace, an unconditional gift. Yes they said enthusiastically, It would be the Holy Communion the Eucharist lived out in the city! Well, hundreds would come to partake thousands over time and many volunteers came from all over the city and many came from near-by communities to help. And those from other towns realized anew that they too had people who were hungry, or lonely or in some kind of need in their community as well. And so, The Banquet came to Yankton, SD and to many communities throughout the land. Churches, civic groups and others lined-up to serve and to help and have been doing so for many years right up to the evening of August 22nd, when Christ Episcopal Church once again was blessed to serve. We experienced, as it is so beautifully written in the bible, Let mutual love continue. Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it. (Hebrews 13:1). The Banquet is also a real-life example of Jesus words, But when you give a luncheon, or a dinner or a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind. And you will be blessed, because they cannot repay you Yes, while I understand that they, the guests, will not pay us back with money, not one volunteer leaves The Banquet without feeling that they have received much more than they gave. The biblical teachings and the examples of many remind us just what a little kindness and a little effort can do. We may have to look a more deeply at the those around us, our neighbors look deeply with a heart of compassion at all of the Beloved s creation and Christ-like grace just can t help but flow out of us!

2 Eastern Deanery Gathering It is time to gear up for both the Eastern Deanery gathering in Brookings at St. Paul s church on Sunday afternoon, September 8 and the annual Episcopal Church Convention at the Ramkota Inn, Pierre on September 27/28---our delegates to both are Pat Michels, Carol Smith and David Broyles. The Eastern Deanery will also hold its own elections for next year and discuss our part in providing refreshments for the convention, as this is the year for the Eastern Deanery to be the hosts. In recent years the convention has been shortened and this year a real innovation. There will be a picnic I m proud to be an Episcopalian, from 11:00 to 3:00 at Steamboat Park (across from the Ramkota). The diocese is providing the grilled burgers and hot dogs, table service, water and condiments. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish or dessert to share. Lawn chairs and picnic lawn games would be helpful also. EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT A DELEGATE YOU ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND THE PICNIC, STAY FOR THE CONVENTION and hear the message from our new Youth Director, The Reverend Portia Hurney Corbin, and meet the two visiting Bishops attending as guests: The Right Reverend George Young, Bishop of our Companion Diocese, East Tennessee and Bishop Gordon Scruton, (retired) Diocese of Western Massachusetts, and enjoy the fellowship of your sister/brother Episcopalians from across the state. There will also be a Stewardship Workshop, that would be of value for anyone attending, with the workshop leader from FLOURISH IN FAITH, our new diocesan stewardship program. We will be soliciting funds for the purchase of fruits, and veggies; and donations of bars, chips, etc. to take to convention--as part of the Eastern Deanery hosting this event. Leave your donation in the offering plate, marked for convention, or let the church secretary know you will be providing bars. Our delegates will take them to the convention. THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING THIS EFFORT! will hold their annual meeting beginning at 11:00 AM on Friday, September 27. It will be held in the Lewis and Clark Room at the Ramkota Inn, with the speaker being the new youth director, The Reverend Portia Hurney Corbin. Lunch is a no host lunch to be served at noon, and the business meeting to follow. Yankton s delegate to the meeting will be chosen at our September 8th meeting, attending with state treasurer, Gloria Pearson.

5 come. Banquet... and a Thanksggiving! The Banquet is in its 17th year of existence and Christ Church has been a part of this ministry every year. This year we had one of our larger crowds and ran out of some items, which has not happened before. As well as the record crowd, we had a record number of volunteers to help set-up, serve, and clean up. Approximately 35 members took part in helping during the evening. In addition, other members also provided cookies, bars and cupcakes, as well as contributing toward covering the expense of the food that was purchased. When I returned home from the Banquet on Thursday evening, August 22, I dropped several coins in my Blue Box and gave thanks for the gallant crew that came to help serve the some 250 people who enjoyed our meal of fried chicken, baked beans, cole slaw, bars, cucumbers, and biscuits. Christ Church was one of the founders of the Banquet eleven years ago, and the main staff has continued all these years, with Janice Cass, Laurie Brown, and Dagmar Hoxie, (members of Sacred Heart Church). We were introduced to Carol (Bruce) Meyer on this evening as the new Banquet Coordinator, succeeding Janice Cass. There have been many changes in helpers through the years. I also gave thanks for these dedicated servants as well as United Church of Christ for providing such a wonderful setting to serve the people who Inez Harris Those who came to serve included: Jim & Gloria Pearson Clark, Agnes, Maeve & Ronan Eide Teresa Luke Altar Guild Scott Director: & Mary Sorensen Andrea Wright Deb Kuder Inez Harris Christ Carol Church Groups & Arlin Houtkooper Episcopal Dawne Church Women & Dick Unruh Brotherhood Carol of St. Smith Andrew& David Broyles Kathy has chaired this event for Christ Church for several years. Dawn We Unruhhope you ll be there, to welcome Marilyn Lofflin. She is one of the volunteers who staff the Servant Hearts Clinic in Yankton. Marilyn Christ will Church tell Groups us how this free medical clinic is providing Episcopal care Church in our Women community. The business meeting will Brotherhood bring of everyone St. Andrew up to date on Christmas-in-July, Church proposed Women United revised Bylaws, committee reports, Community Of the Holy Spirit... I am sure most of you are aware that we have sisters in the Episcopal Church. One of the greatest community of sisters, known as the Community of the Holy Spirit, had their Mother House and Center in a suburb of NYC, close to Columbia University. They send teams across the United States to do retreats and workshops, and one of the greatest experiences that Bill and I had was attending one of these at Trinity Church in Lincoln, NE. We were blessed with good Bible Study, outstanding music and great fellowship, a wonderful memory, provided by Sister Marie Helene, Sister Faith Margaret and Sister Catherine Grace. Sister Marie Helene was well known to all of us as she was an assistant at the then Women s Desk at the Episcopal Church Center, while Ann Smith was the director. She traveled to SD on several occasions, with Ann, to conduct gatherings, including Creative Journey, which both the late Marian Smithey and I attended at the Bishop hare Retreat Center, in Mission. However, my reason for sharing information about this group is that a few years ago they decided to be completely dependent upon the earth and moved their sisterhood to Brewster, NY, not until after a small group had gone there to pave the way, by planting organically, making maple syrup, etc. They have now been completely relocated to Brewster and have built a sustainable living in that place, known as Bluestone Farm and Living Arts Center. They have two cows, that provide them milk for yogurt, cheese, butter and on occasion a bit of ice cream. Their gardens provide them with all the food they can preserve to last them through the year and they even give some of the excess to food pantries. This has been a concentrated life change for this group of sisters and they are happily sharing some of the work with visitors and volunteers, who all share their table and their worship regularly. On August 24, they held an Open House for their constituents and celebrated the completion of a financial drive to do some building and make this a viable home for the future. (Only that I could have attended). The wonders they encounter are on their Facebook Page, for those of you who want to learn more of this wonderful group of sisters. Their sustaining prayer is: HOLY ONE, in wisdom you have made us. Guide us now as we step into our future. Help us to both honor our traditions and keep in mind who will follow as we move forward with the great work of promoting vibrant local agriculture, living arts and spiritual fulfillment. We ask for your blessing upon our many friends who support us with financial gifts. precious time and energy, and loving presence. To the amazing and spectacular community of life which grounds our life on the land and to the holy Spirit who informs all, we give thanks for the awareness of our place and our work May we be worthy. AMEN Inez

They will be riding in a Shelby Mustang in the parade, having been invited to the event by a friend in Wagner. Matt says when you think of Labor Day, you think of Wagner, as they stage a great celebration. A BIT OF HISTORY: Recently THE OBSERVER raised the question as to what car dealership was located at third and locust (the Gurney Motor Building) before the laundry took over. During Riverboat days the mystery was solved, as Mary Flint Renken, brought clippings to their office to identify that it was her grandfather and father who had Flint Motors at that location. The entire Flint family were active members of Christ Church during their life time. The Yankton County Highway 52 Task Force held its first meeting on June 27th and its second meeting on July 25th. Its mission is to spur orderly growth and development along a Yankton County artery that serves 6,700 motorists per day. A member of that ten member committee is our own Father Jim. They will meet monthly at the County Government Center on the fourth Thursday. The task includes a member from the County Commission, one from the City Commission, and one from District III Planning.
