4 October 15 is the feast of Saint Teresa of Avila Born:3/28/ 1515 Died: 10/15/1582 Who she was What the world was like The 1500s were years of exploration. Columbus, under the flag of Spain, had sailed across the sea in 1492 and had come back with news of a New World. This set off a flurry of similar ventures, and the countries of Europe rivaled one another in their efforts to find and claim new territory. These newly discovered lands were full of natural resources such as gold, silver, copper, tin, tea, coffee, chocolate, and spices. These resources made the explorers, and their nations, wealthy. During Teresa's lifetime, trade routes were developed from Europe to the Americas, India, China, and Japan. Teresa was born Teresa de Cepeda y Ahumada near Avila, Spain. Teresa was the third of nine children. Her childhood was happy and ordinary. She loved reading "romances" -- stories about knights in shining armor rescuing young maidens. She enjoyed dressing up, using perfume, and wearing jewelry with her cousins. When Teresa was thirteen, her mother died. Her father decided that Teresa would be sent to be educated at the Augustinian convent. At that time, there were only two life-choices for women: marriage or religious life. Teresa chose religious life, but her father refused to give permission to become a nun. When she secretly left home to join the local Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation, her father finally gave his permission. This Carmelite Convent of the Incarnation community was a large one with 140 nuns. The nuns prayed together and privately each day, but the community was very busy. Each nun had a set of rooms (a bedroom, a small kitchen, and a guest room). Their guests could come and go freely, and nuns could leave the convent at any time for long visits to friends or relatives. The nuns were also allowed to have personal maids! Teresa made her solemn profession as a Carmelite nun, and for the next twenty years she lived at the convent. But in the busy convent, she found meditation and prayer difficult. Her attitude toward her own life and toward God changed in 1555, when she was praying before a statue of the wounded Christ. She began to meditate upon Christ's sufferings. At thirty-nine years of age, Teresa discovered the price Christ paid for love, and began to want to return that love as best she could. She began to realize that the environment of the convent of the Incarnation kept her from a serious life of prayer. It was too big to share a common purpose; it was too open to worldly concerns; and it was too interested in maintaining a comfortable life-style. She began to dream of
5 a small, poor, and fervent Carmelite monastery where the nuns could support one another in their common love of God. The Carmelite reform began. With four companions who shared her views, Teresa founded the Carmel of San José (Saint Joseph), and the Order of Discalced Carmelites was on its way. The word discalced means "shoeless." Teresa founded sixteen monasteries of women. To do this, she traveled long journeys by donkey through every kind of terrain and weather. She became known to the people of Spain as "the roving nun." Teresa had always enjoyed people, and many came to her or wrote to her for her advice. On feast days, she played the tambourine so that the nuns could sing and dance. Teresa wrote several books. Her teachings were based on her own lived experience, and were rooted in the Scriptures, especially the Gospels. In 1970, she was declared a Doctor of the Church. She was gifted with a constant awareness of God's presence. Yet with these favors also came trials. The unreformed Carmelite friars resented Teresa's reforms and tried to stop her. At the same time, the Church was suspicious of private prayer, and Teresa's writings came under scrutiny by the Inquisition (which was a Church-appointed body designated to root out error). Yet, she continued her work for God with patience and fortitude, and at her death said, "Finally, Lord, I am a daughter of the Church." What this saint means to us today Each of us is an explorer, continually meeting new situations, day by day. Saint Teresa was that and more -- an explorer of the spirit. She ventured into the spiritual wilderness of her own heart without a map, and found so many riches that she was asked to write out that map for others. We admire her today for her teachings and her courage. We also admire her for her inner explorations -- not for adventure or wealth, but for God. We admire her for her ability to change, to dream of new ventures for God, and to inspire others to join her. We admire her for her perseverance in prayer, work, travel, and daily life. In these ways we also can follow her map. Like Saint Teresa of Avila, in our prayer, work, travel, and everyday lives, we can explore within and find our way to God. Simple celebrations: St. Teresa of Avila Caramel sauce with apple slices Homemade Caramel Sauce 1/4 C. butter 1C. brown sugar (I used dark brown sugar and mine ended up tasting a little like toffee) 1/2 C. heavy cream pinch of salt Melt in a saucepan over medium low heat. Cook until thick, about 7 minutes. Add a teaspoon of vanilla and cook a minute longer.
