2 ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST CHURCH - WINTHROP HAPPY FATHERS DAY Today we celebrate Father s Day. We honor our fathers and thank them for giving us life, for nurturing that life within us and for helping us to be all that we can be. We pray for our fathers, both living and deceased at all the Masses. ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Ezekiel 17:22-24 Ezekiel was a major Old Testament prophet who ministered to the Jewish people exiled in Babylon. He often used parables in dramatizations to convey his message. In this passage, Ezekiel uses the image of trees to talk about the restoration of Israel in the fall of the Babylonian empire. Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:6-10 We continue today to read from Paul s second letter to the Corinthians. In this section of the letter, Paul describes our life on earth as a pilgrimage home to heaven. In your charity please pray for the souls of Ritchie Strangie and Matthew Cascio who were buried from St. John s this past week. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Also, pray for Mrs. Jean O Connor, the mother of Fr. Chris O Connor. On Tuesday, June 26th, the youth of St. John s will be traveling to New Hampshire for a fun day at Canobie Lake Park. If you are in middle school or high school and want to spend the day enjoying rides and games, call the rectory at The price is $30.00 per person and includes bus transportation or $25.00 if travelling on your own. The bus will leave St. John s Oceanview parking lot at 9:30 am and will leave Canobie Lake at 5:00 pm. Celebrate a Pro-Life Father s Day Parkman Bandstand on Boston Common The Massachusetts March for Life is on Father s Day, June 17, 2018! Help raise money for pregnancy help groups! Let the public and legislature know that 1.4 million babies have died in Massachusetts since Rowe v Wade! Rally begins at 1:00pm, march starts at 2:30p.m. More info: life.org or SANCTUARY CANDLES During this week of June 17th, the Sanctuary Candles in the upper church and the chapel will be burning for the greater glory of God in memory of Rose Carbone, lovingly remembered by her son Joe and Marianna and family. If you would like both Sanctuary Candles near the Tabernacles in the upper church and the chapel to burn day and night for a week in memory of a loved one, for someone serving in the military, for healing or for any special intention, please call Carol Cardinale at to make the arrangements. 3 ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Parish Support and Finances Our Offertory this weekend, June 16th/17th has two Intentions, our regular Parish Support Collection and the Collection for Promoting the Gospel. We thank you for your generosity. The basket will passed once. Our fiscal year to date totals began as of July 1, This week s second collection Promoting the Gospel supports Catholic Campaign for Human Development (CCHD) and the Catholic Communication Campaign (CCC). Through the work of these two organizations the Gospel is promoted by supporting those in poverty, providing grants to community based groups and using the entire array of media tools available today to evangelize and promote Gospel values. Visit an isolated senior in his/her home in the Greater Lynn area once a week to offer companionship, empathy and advocacy. Watch TV, play a game or just enjoy a nice chat; no personal care, errands or housework involved. You will also learn about services and support that also might be helpful to this senior with whom you ll be matched. Training and supervision is provided. While the time you spend each week is modest (one to one and a half hours at most), we ask for a one year commitment to the program to help relationship building. Reliable vehicle needed. This question found in the New Testament letter to James, gives the response that the sick should call for the priests of the church who are to pray over and anoint the sick with oil in the name of the Lord. Never hesitate to ask for prayer and the Sacrament of the Sick prior to surgery or when diagnosed with a serious illness. The Sacrament is not looked on as The Last Rites but as a powerful instrument of God s healing presence. = = = = = Home Visit If you know of someone who is unable to attend Mass due to age or health problems and would like to receive the Eucharist, please have them call the rectory at to arrange for a home visit.
