2 ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST CHURCH - WINTHROP TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: Numbers 11:25-29 The book of Numbers describes the wanderings of the Jewish people in the Sinai Desert. Earlier in the book, Moses had complained to God about the difficulties of governing so many people. In response, God had directed Moses to gather 70 elders around the meeting tent to receive a share in the administrative burdens. Today s passage picks it up from there. Second Reading: James 5:1-6 Today we conclude our series of five readings from the letter of James. A major concern in this letter is social justice. Today, the author delivers a blistering attack, reminiscent of some of the Old Testament prophets. Gospel: Strong words in today s Gospel: Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him if a great millstone were put around his neck and he were thrown into the sea. We have a huge responsibility to give good example to children and youngsters in our midst - and to our peers. Repeat the Gospel acclamation often in the week ahead. Your word, O Lord, is truth. Consecrate us in the truth. Silver and Gold Wedding Anniversary Mass Are you celebrating your 25th or 50th Wedding Anniversary this year? His Eminence, Cardinal O Malley, will celebrate a Mass for Wedding Anniversary couples on Sunday, October 28, 2018 at 4:00pm at St. Mary Parish, 133 School St., Waltham, MA The Mass will include the renewal of vows. Family and friends are welcome to attend. Register on line: or at the rectory by October 10th to be included in the Mass program. A formal invitation will be mailed to registered couples. All baptized persons with disabilities have a right to adequate catechesis and deserve the means to develop a relationship with God. National Directory for Catechesis United States Conference of Catholic Bishops St. John s has a component to our Religious Education Program called the Genesis Program. These classes are for those children who have some learning difficulties that cannot be addressed in our traditional program but who still want to learn about God and receive the Sacraments. If you are interested in registering your child for this program, or would like more information, please contact Karen Flaherty at or flats111@aol.com. Classes will begin on October 21st ALL ARE WELCOME Our last VIRTUS TRAINING CLASS is tomorrow, Monday, October 1st at 6:30pm in room 7 of the school building. If you are going to be working with the children in our Parish (Religious Ed teacher, Scouts, etc.) and have not taken the class, you must do so now. This training is mandated by the Archdiocese of Boston. Please call Shirley Guthro at to register for the class. = = = = = Confirmation Parent/Sponsor/Candidate Meeting On Wednesday evening, October 3rd at 8:00pm there will be a meeting in the school hall for Confirmation candidates, parents and sponsors. At this meeting you will be given a packet of important information regarding the upcoming year. It is imperative that you be here on that evening. On Sunday, October 14th at the 10:00am Liturgy, we will celebrate as a Parish community the Presentation of our Candidates. All of our Confirmation candidates, sponsors and families are expected to participate in this Liturgy. We look forward to seeing you on Wednesday evening, October 3rd and again on Sunday, October 14th. = = = = = Confirmation Robes Many of you have asked if we have a need for Confirmation robes. These red robes are most often only used once. If you have a red robe you would like to donate, it would be appreciated. On Wednesday, October 3rd our 10th grade classes begin and it is at this parent meeting that we offer robes to those who would like them. = = = = = Confirmation I (Grade 9) Pro-Life Speaker On Sunday evening, September 30th at 6:00pm Ms. Linda Thayer will be speaking to ALL Grade 9 students. Ms. Thayer recently retired after 34 years of teaching science in the Boston Public Schools. For the past 30 years she has also presented over 2,000 programs on respect for life and respect for sexuality (abstinence) in the Greater Boston area. She has also been a member of the Family Life and Pro-Life Sub-Committee of the Massachusetts Catholic Conference. Ms. Thayer is associated with the Pro-Life Office of the Archdiocese of Boston. She has also been speaking to St. John s students for over 20 years. As always, parents are most welcome to attend any of our guest speaker sessions. In your charity please pray for the souls of Bernice Woolf and Terrence Casey Kirby who were buried from St. John s this past week. May their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

3 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 Parish Support and Finances Our Offertory this weekend, September 29th/30th has two Intentions, our regular Parish Support Collection and the Grand Annual Collection. We thank you for your generosity. Prior Offertory: $5, Budgeted Goal: $5, FYTD Off: $70, FYTD Goal: 74, Weekly collections fund the day to day operations of the parish. Our fiscal year to date totals began as of July 1, This weekend, September 29th/30th, our second collection will be the Grand Annual Collection. Our parish depends on your generosity to maintain and improve parish property. If you look around the property, you will see much that has been done and much that needs to be done. By God s help, they will be strengthened spiritually during their preparation and will receive the Sacraments fruitfully. The RCIA program includes people who were never baptized; those baptized in another faith; and those who were baptized Catholic but have never received the Sacraments of Eucharist or Confirmation. SANCTUARY CANDLES During this week of September 30th, the Sanctuary Candles in the Upper Church and the Chapel will be burning for the greater glory of God in memory of Frederick Leary, lovingly requested by his family. If you would like both Sanctuary Candles near the Tabernacles in the upper church and the chapel to burn day and night for a week in memory of a loved one, for someone serving in the military, for healing or for any special intention, please call Carol Cardinale at to make the arrangements.
