Study questions may be completed as the student reads or at the end of the week when reading has been completed. Notes Student Daily Assignments Parent Daily Guidelines 1 Chapter 1-3 Have the student read Chapter 1 Chapter 3 and do Study Questions. Chapter 1. The Four Apostles. The first chapter begins in the year 1220 in the City of Rome. The nephew of Stephen Cardinal Orsini has made a miraculous recovery due to the intercession and prayers of a religious assembly led by a Spanish friar named Dominic De Guzman. A bishop from Poland, Ivo Odrowatz, hears about this miracle and wishes to meet Dominic before they leave for Poland. It is a young priest, Hyacinth, who suggests that they should have some of Dominic s friars come to Cracow, Poland. The next day the three polish priests go to Santa Sabina to meet with Dominic De Guzman. Unfortunately, He has so few friars that he is unable to fulfill Ivo s request. After a moment he suggests that Hyacinth, his brother Ceslaus and two of the bishop s servants stay and train to become friars. Chapter 2. A New Life. The new friars are settled in Santa Sabina. Fr. Dominic explains how he founded his order in 1215 to fight the Albegensian Heresy. He wrote a Rule for his order to follow based on prayer and suffering. Later the novices discuss contemplation with Fr. Tancred. At the end of the chapter, Bishop Ivo returns to take his charges back to Poland. Chapter 3. Northward The Course. A week later Dominic decides to send the novices to Poland as friars. The party sets out in May while it is warm. After a while they rest and say the divine office. Hyacinth tells the history of Poland, most notably about Prince Mieszko, who allowed Christianity to thrive in Poland. However, as St. Hyacinth points out, because of familial disputes, Poland continues to be a divided country with no time to think about God. While the polish friars discuss the history of their land, Dominic thinks of the future salvation of Poland. Copyright 2011 All Rights Reserved KK2
2 Chapter 4-6 Have the student read Chapter 4-6 and do Study Questions. Chapter 4. The Father. As Dominic is leaving the party at the town of Viterbo, Hyacinth confesses his doubts over the father leaving the new friars. Henry suggests that they can help each other through the celebration of the mass and small prayers or offerings. Dominic points out that prayer can unite the group even through death. Before leaving, Dominic leaves Hyacinth in charge of the new order as their Superior. As the brothers travel, they stay at various monasteries and meet friars of other orders - specifically the Friars Minor founded by Francis of Assisi. Finally the party reaches southern Austria to find news that the Bishop of Salzburg has invited them to stay. Hyacinth is worried that this will interfere with their plans to return home, but eventually humbly offers the decision to God. Chapter 5. First Fruits When they arrive in Friesach, they are greeted by the population, who are curious about the new order of friars. After six weeks, Hyacinth has fifty interviews with men who wish to join his order. Despite the setback for Hyacinth to return and the amount of work that must be done in Friesach, he remembers to daily unite his order with the Divine Will. He asks the Archbishop what he would like Hyacinth and his order to do. The Archbishop recommends that he stay until October, appoint a prior and then leave for Poland. After speaking to Brother Herman, Hyacinth decides to make him prior of the new monastery. He recommends that Brother Herman continue to trust in the Blessed Mother for strength. Chapter 6. A Poor Man Comes to Cracow. After Brother Herman s appointment, Hyacinth receives word from Andreas, the Bishop of Prague, asking for Hyacinth to send him one of his friars. Father Hyacinth decides to send his younger brother Ceslaus. The brothers realize that the way to converting more souls is through their personal sacrifices. In Moravia, Hyacinth must part with another friend, Brother Henry, who is a native to that region, so that he may found another monastery. A week later Hyacinth leaves for Cracow by himself. As he nears the city he meets two children, Stanislaus and Elizabeth. During his conversation he discovers that the children have not been baptized and he begins teaching them their Catechism. As they talk, Bishop Ivo s golden carriage arrives to meet Hyacinth. Copyright 2011 All Rights Reserved KK3
3 4 Chapter 7-8 Written Assignment Have the student read Chapter 7-8 and do Study Questions. Chapter 7. The Work Begins. When the party of clerics and noblemen arrive, the Duke Leszek prostrates himself at Hyacinths feet and declares that a vision of Our Lady has been seen in the sky, giving her blessing to Hyacinth. In the following weeks Hyacinth has thirty young men apply for admission to the order. Bishop Ivo tells Hyacinth that they have decided to give him the Church of the Holy Trinity. One day Hyacinth and his novices are taking an outing and begin to discuss Father Dominic. Brother Florian suggests that Dominic should come see the new convent; Hyacinth tells the novices that he has been told by God of Dominic s passing. To cheer the novices, Hyacinth tells them about Dominic and his mission. Later Bishop Ivo discusses the Way of the Cross with Duke Leszek. At the end of the chapter, the people of Cracow celebrate the placement of St. Stanislaus relics to their city. Hyacinth gives a speech on the life and history of Bishop Stanislaus. At the end of this chapter, a widow s son drowns. Chapter 8. Two Promises. Hyacinth has been asked to revive the widow s son. After praying to Christ with the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the boy is revived. Hyacinth reminds the people that the miracle was not a result of his power but of St. Stanislaus and God. On the Feast of the Annunciation, the friars open their convent, allowing the people of Cracow to visit the cloister. The Papal Legate is in attendance with his nephew Father James. When the procession of friars enters the church, James feels called to join their order. Though his uncle and other nobles feel this is a mistake, he is received into the order a week later. By 1225 Hyacinth opens two more orders. In 1224, Hyacinth is blessed with a vision of the Queen of Heaven. She tells him that anything he asks shall be granted through her. He asks for the salvation of Northern Europe. In return, the Blessed Virgin asks him to bring her more souls. Have the student complete the written assignment in a minimum of 1 paragraph, due Monday. Make sure to include: Rome, Friesach (Austria), Cracow, Pomerania (Germany), Kiev (Ukraine). Have the student look up all the vocabulary words for Chapters 1-8 in the glossary prior to reading. Study questions may be completed as the student reads or at the end of the week when reading has been completed. Notes Student Daily Assignments Parent Daily Guidelines 1 Chapter 9-11 Have the student read Chapter 9-11 and do Study Questions. Chapter 9. The Work Continues. Three years later Hyacinth is fulfilling his desire to Christianize Northern Europe. He leaves for Prussia with three companions: Florian, Godmus, and Benedict. The land is rough. The travelers hear tales of hardened Prussian warriors and how past missionaries had become martyrs. Hyacinth tells them about his visit with the Blessed Mother so as to rouse their spirits. He suggests they begin their work in Pomerania so that they may secure the friendship of the Duke Swientopelk. On their way they must cross the Vistula, however, this becomes impossible due to torrents of rain. When the pagan locals are unwilling to help, Hyacinth offers their dilemma to Mary and begins to walk across the Vistula. He beckons his companions to follow, but finds them too afraid. He returns and uses his cloak as a raft to help them cross the river. A week later the duke receives them and willingly gives them land and money for a monastery. St. Hyacinth requests the Island of Gedan for the new convent. Chapter 10. The Light Comes to Russia. The new establishment on the Island of Gedan is dedicated to St. Nicolas. When Hyacinth leaves for Prussia he makes Benedict the prior. During the journey to Prussia, the three brothers discuss the errors of the Russian church. They decide to start in Kiev, the capital of Russia. Hyacinth mentions that his brother has moved to working in Breslau under Bishop Lawrence. During their travels, brother Florian learns to accept the Cross rather than run away. When they arrive in Kiev, they kneel in prayer. Kiev is ruled by Prince Vladimir Rurikovitch, who is eastern orthodox and unfriendly towards westerners. They find the prince unwilling to allow them to preach. As the friars are escorted out they happen upon the young blind princess, who Hyacinth heals. Chapter 11. Gathering Clouds. Princess Anna tells her overjoyed father that Hyacinth was the one to heal her. Vladimir asks for Hyacinth s forgiveness for his earlier error and soon converts. Soon the story of Hyacinth s life is circulated around the city of Kiev. Unfortunately, the eastern priests became jealous of the Brothers attention. Before they can help the eastern Christians, however, they decide to convert the pagans. Hyacinth sets out for the woods of Dnieper with Brother Martin. The young friar tells Hyacinth about the political strife in Poland. The upheaval had spread to Prussia in Silesia, forcing Martin to ask the Knights of the Cross to come and restore peace. When Hyacinth and Martin arrive at the Dnieper they find that the pagans are already offering sacrifice. Hyacinth again walks across the water toward the island. After much noise, Martin sees Hyacinth driving out a demonic creature from the woods while the pagans kneel in penance. Copyright 2011 All Rights Reserved KK5
2 Chapter Have the student read Chapter and do Study Questions. Chapter 12 The Passing Years. The heretical priests are outraged to hear of Hyacinths work at the Dnieper and plot against him. One day the Prince comes to the monastery looking ill and unhappy because the priests have threatened to depose him. Hyacinth decides to install Godinus as the prior and leave Kiev for Cracow with Florian. When they return they discover that Bishop Ivo is dead and the priest to succeed him was martyred in Dalmatia. Years later, there is news of an invasion by Batu Kahn, the Tartar Chieftain. Hyacinth discusses the problem on the way to the General Chapter in Paris. Ceslaus organizes a similar Chapter in Sandomierz in Chapter 13. Thunder in the East. Ceslaus receives word that Hyacinth in near and staying at a country estate. However, during his stay there was hail damage to the farm and fields. Hyacinth tells the farmers to pray and the next morning the crops are restored. At the end of the chapter, Hyacinth connects the miracle to Saint Margaret of Antioch. At one of the meetings the Friars discuss where they should evangelize and Hyacinth brings up the problem of the Tartars. He continues to explain that Poland will be the sacrifice for the rest of Europe. He reminds his peers of St. Stanislaus and the miracle after his death. He likens this miracle with the union of Poland through suffering. In 1240 an army under Batu Kahn s cousin, Mangu Kahn, arrives at Dnieper. As the city of Kiev awaits an attack by the encroaching army, Hyacinth and his friars prepare with prayer and sacrifice. Hyacinth s term as Prior is coming to an end and he is saddened to leave Kiev. Finally in November 1240 the Tartars storm Kiev. Hyacinth calms his brothers and takes the golden ciborium. He begins a procession to the chapel but stops when he hears the voice of the Virgin Mary, who asks Hyacinth, with the strength of Christ, to take her as well. Chapter 14 The Storm. The brothers leave the monastery and enter the streets with the statue of Mary and the Blessed Sacrament. The tartars begin to storm the group but are stopped by the power of the statue and ciborium. They immediately kneel, letting the friars pass. Hyacinth sees the encampment and leads the brothers down to the water. They escape away from the Tartars and Kiev. They find safety in Lemberg and by January they hear of Kiev s destruction. In April of 1241 they hear of Liegnitz s capture but mysteriously the Tartars withdraw after winning the battle. The tartars leave Poland and Hyacinth prophesies their return in The following summer, Hyacinth receives word that Ceslaus is dead. During an attack he had mounted the city walls as a sacrifice. As the Tartars fired poisoned arrows an unearthly light surrounded Ceslaus causing the Tartars to stop their attack. Copyright 2011 All Rights Reserved KK6
3 4 Chapter Written Assignment Have the student read Chapter and do Study Questions. Chapter 15 Apostle of the North. Hyacinth cures Vitoslava s twin boys from blindness and asks her to consecrate them to Our Lady. Meanwhile the Cistercian order announces that they will retire from preaching and become a cloistered order. However, they would continue to offer certain prayers throughout the day for their brothers in Christ. Hyacinth receives word that both Father Henry and Herman have passed away. At sixty years old Hyacinth is finally able to return to missionary work and decides to head for Vilna. Afterwards he continues towards Kiev with the hope of evangelizing the world, and in doing so rejects honors of becoming a bishop. In 1257 Hyacinth returns to Cracow, two months before turning seventy-two. In July, Hyacinth leaves Cracow to visit friends in the country. Along the way he acquaints himself with the young man, Vislaus, who is to guide him to his destination. As Vislaus goes ahead he falls from a bridge and is killed. Chapter 16. The Message. Hyacinth is implored by the people to raise Vislaus from the dead, which he does through prayer. When Hyacinth returns to the Monastery of the Holy Trinity he is weak and worn out from performing miracles. The Father Prior explains a vision he had to the novices regarding Hyacinth and his desire to die. After concluding the mass, the Prior could see a heavenly vision of Mary and Christ offering Hyacinth a crown. On the Eve of the Assumption Hyacinth calls for Brother Florian and wishes to chant the Lauds and Matins with the other brothers. As he prays, he thinks of the night the Blessed Mother came and spoke to him. Hyacinth then asks is he may assist in the Mass. On the way back to Hyacinth s cell, Florian asks what he will do without his friend, Hyacinth promises to give him an answer soon. The next day he receives Extreme Unction and he tells Florian that to call upon him from Heaven when he is in need.
