3 The vicar is on leave at the moment so the message below from Bishop Rachel is added in Lieu of his letter: Statement from the Bishop of Gloucester, The Rt Revd Rachel Treweek On the Independent Peter Ball review, An abuse of Faith produced by Dame Moira Gibb I have read Dame Moira s report and am greatly shocked and distressed by its content. The report presents a devastating account of Peter Ball s abuse and it is a matter of deep shame and regret that a Bishop in the Church of England committed such horrendous crimes and that as a Church we repeatedly failed to act and protect those who came forward for help. I feel immensely sad that Neil Todd took his own life and is not with us today - I wish to commend his tenacity and courage and that of other victims and survivors. There are no excuses for what took place. The Church commissioned this review so that we could learn from our failings. I, alongside my staff team, remain committed to striving for the highest level of safeguarding in the Diocese of Gloucester and making our churches the safest places they can possibly be. We will continue to work with the National Safeguarding Team and act upon the recommendations made in the report. Any survivors or those with information about church-related abuse must know that they will be listened to in confidence, with genuine openness and empathy. 4 Kingscote Village Fete - Saturday 9 September to 5.00pm This afternoon event in aid of St John the Baptist s Church and the Gloucestershire Historic Churches Trust, will take place by kind invitation of Mrs Lorna Reynolds in the grounds of Cedar House. The more boisterous activities will take place in the paddock behind the churchyard. We will be running fun events for all the family including stalls, activities for children, games, and of course tea and cakes. Those parking in Kingscote Village must respect the need for access by public service vehicles such as Fire Tenders and Ambulances. See the enclosed leaflet with more details. Come along, bring your friends and enjoy the afternoon Village Hall Programme The PCC and helpers Coffee Morning - Wednesday 13 September, to am, coffee and cake 2, all welcome. Film Night - Returning on Tuesday 19 September when we will be showing the critically acclaimed dramatised story about the founding of the Facebook The Social Network. Free admission with pay bar. Future Film programme Since 2010 Film Nights have been presenting a remarkable variety of excellent and memorable movies, 46 at the last count. More recently they have been enjoyed upstairs in the comfort of the Reynolds Room. We try to give those attending some background to the films to enable more appreciation of them. Paddy Carpenter has been collecting suggestions for future events and invites more ideas from residents. His list currently includes: Manhatten, the Secret Life of Walter Mitty, Becket Argo, The Maltese Falcon and Cry Freedom. Grumbolds Ash Pauline McTear On Wednesday 20 September we visit two historical places associated with the now long gone Cotswold wollen weaving industry: The Blanket Hall in Witney OX28 6HL - free parking OX28 6GW, where that industry was regulated, and Filkins Mill museum GL7 3JJ which now markets high quality woollen clothing and other products. There are no admission charges at either establishment. The Witney old town centre is very picturesque, and there is a nice Bistro at the Blanket Hall serving from am as well as a tea shop at Filkins Mill. We meet at the Village Hall at am to share the driving. Jutta Tubbs

Brockhill House, Scrubetts Lane, Bagpath - Erection of two and single storey rear extensions, formation of porch, insertion of side facing dormer window, insertion of first floor side facing window, enlargement of gablets and gable roofs to side Bagpath Court Barns - Alteration and extensions of barn and attached stables (with approved ancillary residential unit) to create one independent dwelling Potholes The clerk to the PC can report potholes for remedial action, but the problem is so widespread and the time involved in locating and communicating a specific pothole makes this impractical. Parishioners are requested to contact the GCC contractor Amey on Tel or on: gcchighways@amey.co.uk Free range-eggs for sale Anna Davison Mrs Pat Cooksley of 2 The Windmill normally has some free-range eggs for sale at 1 for six. Best call mornings. Poppy Appeal After decades of dedicated service, Mrs June Hill is retiring from carrying out the house to house collection in Leighterton for the annual Poppy Appeal. If anyone could take over collecting in Leighterton, or knows anyone I could ask, please do let me know. Also, if anyone might like to take over from me as Poppy Appeal Organiser for Kingscote District (i.e. Kingscote, Bagpath, Leighterton, Lasborough and Calcot), I would be happy to explain what is involved. We collect around 800 each year, so it is well worthwhile. Sheila Hill, Tel

6 Mobile Post Office The mobile Post Office parks at the Village Hall between 1.00 and 2.00 pm on Mondays and Thursdays (except on Bank Holidays). It stocks a wide range of mailing materials, and can dispatch all mail and moderate sized parcels. It also stocks most generally used pro-forma/application forms for government services, and provides financial services for all major banks and currencies, including cheque payments as well as PO savings accounts and insurance. Mobile Library The next visits will be on Fridays 1 and 29 September when the van will park in front of The Walled Garden between am and 12 noon. Weekly Recycling - Green food boxes and wheelie bins All current collection points - from 7.30 am on Thursdays. Fortnightly Recycling - Black boxes, White Bags and Blue bags All current collection points - from 7.30 am on Thursdays 7 and 21 September. Magazine Any material which may be of interest for the next issue of the Forerunner should be sent by 20 September to H. Tubbs, 3 The Walled Garden, Tel Restoration of Bells We have submitted an application for a Faculty to restore the bells in the church tower, which have deteriorated due to age and weathering from the elements. We were recently advised not to use either of them on safety grounds. The small bell was cast in Gloucester in 1740 and the larger one in 1795, but the bell frames in the tower were adapted from an earlier installation which housed five bells. It is interesting to note that HMS Victory was launched on 7 May 1765, American Independence was declared on 4 July 1776, and Edward Jenner was married in the church on 6 March Although our bells are not listed as of national importance, they represent a fine relic of rural hand built machinery which we hope to bring back into use around the end of the year. However this will depend on timely approval by the Diocese. The PCC assisted by Graham and Philip Nichols.
