1 ST. JAMES EPISCOPAL CHURCH PARKTON THE CHURCH BELL From Fr. Dan s Study Come and See The population of St. James Church is getting older and smaller. This is the biggest problem that we currently face. Young people are turning away from the church and towards a combination of places like Starbucks and the Red Cross. They like Starbucks because it makes them feel connected or at least energized. They like the Red Cross because they know their money will get to people who are really in need. This is the problem. So, what is the solution? The solution is two-fold. First, we must make sure that our churches are attractive to those who might come to them. This means paying attention to our buildings and grounds, our worship, music, programs and people. We must be a dynamic place where folks feel connected and are connected to others and to God; we must be a dynamic place of Christ s compassion for those in need of life s basics: food, shelter and kindness. Second, in addition to making St. James Church attractive, we must give up the passive approach to evangelism and church growth. The If we build it, they will come approach simply does not work. We can no longer sit idly by and hope that people will visit us and maybe stay. Jesus did not just walk around and hope people would form a line behind him. He went and asked them to come and see where he abides. Where he abides, in this case, means what kind of new life he is living and offering to others. JUNE 2014 Sunday Morning Schedule 8:00 Early Worship 10:00 Family Worship with Music and Adult Choir INSIDE THIS ISSUE: At St. James Church, we are good at fund-raising. We do great mortgage meals, pit beef sales and seasonal festivals. We know the importance of well-planned, annual stewardship campaigns. Now we must use these same fund-raising skills and put as much energy into doing people-raising. Well planned, annual people-raising campaigns are just as important, if not more so. JUNE CALENDAR PASTORAL COUN- SLING 2 3 At our retreat day at the Black Rock Christian Retreat Center in southern Lancaster County on the 7 th of this month, the Vestry and I begin planning for two annual people-raising campaigns called Come and See. One will be held early this fall; the other in the spring. There are three broad goals to these campaigns. First is a direct mailing to the Parkton, Maryland community, letting our neighbors know we are here and alive and well. Second, everyone in the church (yes, that means you, too) will be trained to ask friends, co-workers, neighbors and family to come and see our church for a visit. And third, in the mean time, we will be doing everything we can to make St. James Church so attractive that visitors will want to stay and get involved. I am excited about being a part of a riotous movement called to change the world. You will hear more about the Come and See people-raising campaigns in the weeks and months to come. INSTRUCTIONS FOR RECEIVING HOLY COMMUNION Holy Communion is the sacred meal of the Christian faith. While the Episcopal Church, as all churches rooted in the historic Christian faith, affirms that the sacrament of Holy Baptism is the ancient and normal entry point for receiving the sacrament of Holy Communion, we also believe that anyone who desires to receive the body and blood of our Lord is always welcome at God s table. Wherever you are in your spiritual journey, the Episcopal Church is here for you, and we invite you to explore with us what being baptized could mean for your life. Want to know more? Please speak with Fr. Dan Hinkle after worship. When receiving Holy Communion, you may take just the bread if you prefer. Gluten-free bread is available upon request. When receiving the wine from the common cup, please guide the chalice with one of your hands; or you may carefully dip an edge of the bread in the common cup. If you are not baptized, or would prefer not to receive communion for any personal or religious reason, you are still invited to come forward at the time of communion to receive a blessing from the priest. Please place your arms across your chest to indicate your desire to receive a blessing. Above all, remember that all are welcome here at St. James Episcopal Church.. Memorial Flowers and Candles Flower and Candle Memorials are wonderful ways to remember and honor loved ones at Sunday worship. 8 Meditation given by Paula Jeffery FROM ORDINARY TO GREAT Page 8 Anyone who studies God s ways soon realizes they are quite different from man s. Worldly wisdom says that extraordinary people and abundant resources are needed for great tasks, yet the Lord often chooses the small and insignificant to achieve His purposes on earth. For example, Christ selected a rather unimpressive group of men as disciples, yet after being filled with the Spirit, they turned the world upside down, During His ministry on earth, Jesus fed thousands with a child s meager lunch, and He viewed the widow s two small coins as a greater offering that the other generous donations (John 6:5; Luke 21:2-3). God specializes in using people who aren t naturally qualified to accomplish His tasks. Moses was a verbally impaired 80 year-year-old shepherd who liberated a nation. After Gideon hid from the enemy, God made him a valiant warrior. David was the overlooked youngest son who killed a giant with a small stone and became Israel s greatest king. God isn t looking for impressive people; He wants willing ones who will bow the knee in humble submission. Being weak and ordinary doesn t make you useless. Rather, it positions you for a demonstration of divine power in our life. He takes insignificant ones and delights in making them great. Have you ever considered that your lack of ability, talent, or skill is the ideal setting for great display of Christ s power and glory? If you are willing to submit to His leading and venture into the scary yet rewarding territory of faith and obedience, He will do great things in and through you. By Charles Stanley Choir's Last Sunday is June 29 The last rehearsal for this year is Thursday, June 26, 7:30 9 pm.
