Michael D. Tomsyck Gary T. St. Louis Lee W. Kopotic KC INSURANCE Luke Meinholz Cottage Grove luke.meinholz@kofc.org Dear Brother Knights, Chaplain s Corner Thomas 'a Kempis said, "You must be willing, for the love of God, to suffer all things, namely: labors and sorrows, temptations and vexations, anxieties, necessities, sickness, injuries, detractions, reprehensions, humiliations, confusion, correction, and contempt. These things help to obtain virtue; these try a novice of Christ; these procure a heavenly crown." This is a good reflection as we begin the Lenten Season with Ash Wednesday on February l0th. Once again the Church will ask us to unite with the sufferings of Christ during Lent. Each of us is encouraged to do penance so that we strengthen our will power thus being better able to say no to temptation. I remind you that we must each decide what is truly a penance for us. If I enjoy steak and go to a restaurant that doesn't serve steak, I'm not doing penance. If I go to a meal and give up dessert but there is no dessert there, I am not doing penance. Many people do give up something they enjoy for Lent. However, Lenten Penance may also be doing very positive things like visiting the sick, helping a neighbor, forgiving those who have wronged us. The list can go on and on. What we choose is especially good if it causes us to go out of our comfort zone. During this Holy Year I especially encourage you to practice the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy as wonderful ways to make the Lenten Season special and spiritually fruitful for you. Obviously, extra attendance at daily Mass, devotions and the sacrament of reconciliation greatly help us on our spiritual journey to unite ourselves more closely to Christ crucified. 2 Right to Life. ) Pope Francis announced that priests would have the power to absolve the sin of abortion for the Year of Mercy in a Sept. 1 papal letter addressed to Archbishop Rino Fisichella, president of the Pontifical Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelization. In his letter, Pope Francis reflected on the tragedy of abortion and recalled his meetings with women who bear in their hearts the scar of this agonizing and painful decision. The forgiveness of God cannot be denied to one who has repented, especially when that person approaches the sacrament of confession with a sincere heart in order to obtain reconciliation with the Father, he said. For this reason too, I have decided... to concede to all priests for the jubilee year the discretion to absolve of the sin of abortion those who have procured it and who, with contrite heart, seek forgiveness for it. He directed that priests fulfill this great task by expressing words of genuine welcome, combined with a reflection that explains the gravity of the sin committed, besides indicating a path of authentic conversion. Grand Knight s Report (from ncregister.com) Brother Knights, Welcome to February! A mid-winter month, with the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday, February 10, and many council activities. Join us on Sunday, February 7 for Corporate Communion at the 8:00 am Mass at St. Albert the Great church. Please wear your KC shirt or name tag and join your brother Knights as we celebrate the Eucharist as a council. We will have a reserved set of pews so we can sit together. Family is welcome to sit with us too! The Council meals program is in full swing this month with 3 dinners and 2 breakfasts planned. One of those dinners is the February 20 smelt, chicken and ham buffet with proceeds going towards council activities. Please spread the word to family and friends to come to the Round Table for a great meal. For more information, contact Brother Paul ( , pgorecktke@gmail.com) On February 21, for the second consecutive year, our council will host a Free Throw Competition. This event is open to boys and girls ages This is a great program for the youth of Sun Prairie. For more information contact Brother Dave Hockenberry ( , dhockenb@amfam.com). ( continued on page 6)
3 Council News & Events Think You Are Too Old for Coverage? Maybe Not You are never too young or too old to consider purchasing life insurance. If you have a financial need for coverage, or will in the future, a permanent life insurance policy can be just the thing you need. When you are young and presumably healthy, coverage will be very inexpensive when compared to purchasing the same policies when you are older. If you ve put off purchasing coverage, or you realize that you may need additional insurance, the Order may still be able to help you, even if other companies cannot. In fact, in 2012, the issue age of our permanent life insurance products was extended to age 80. Naturally, your health, and whether or not you smoke, will be taken into consideration, so underwriting standards for risk and age apply. But, the extension is a great blessing for me and it could be for you too. Now I can help members that I couldn t help before. Are you or one of your brother knights one of those members? Whether you re 18 or 80, the Knights of Columbus has products that will work for you and your family. I look forward to discussing coverage with you. 4 God calls each of us to holiness. Lent is a six week opportunity to make greater effort to be a holy person. This is the time prior to Lent for each of us to decide what Lent 2016 will be for each of us. In this busy and complex world it is so important for us to daily set our heart at rest. There is so much rushing around that Lent should be an opportunity for us to slow our lives a bit and daily come more into the Presence of Christ. One way to do that is simply to look at the crucifix in our home spending a couple of minutes thanking the Lord for what he did for us. Blessed Lent, Chaplain s Corner-Continued Msgr. He is a Past Grand Knight and Past District Deputy. He is our Program Chairman and is responsible for all aspects of planning and directing our council s meals program. Paul, along with his wife Cindy, put in long hours for each of the meals. Additionally, they prepare the meal each year for the evening that our council hosts Sunshine Supper. Paul has also put together our Council History Book for the last several years. The books are always well done and are awarded many points by the judges. The Gorectke family are members of St. Albert the Great Parish. Thank you for all you do for our Council and the Sun Prairie community Brother Paul! Mark Shingler KC Kudos 2016 January Knight of the Month Brother Mark is a 35-year member of our council. He is currently serving as our Warden. Mark routinely helps with Bingo on Monday nights and is a regular in the kitchen during the Mission Trip Fish Fries. On the second Monday of every month he stays after Bingo is done to make sure the council chambers are setup and ready to go for council meetings. Additionally, Mark recently agreed to take over the History Book responsibilities. The History Book is an important tool for illustrating Council accomplishments to prospective new members and is necessary to win the Complete Council award. I am very grateful for Mark s willingness to put together our 2015 History Book. Mark is a member of St. Albert the Great Parish where he serves as an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. Outside of the Knights, Mark is a high school football referee in the Madison area. Thank you for all you do for our Council and the Sun Prairie community Brother Mark! Council News & Events Jesuit Retreat 2016 SEEKING TO SEE JESUS BETTER? Now a man there named Zacchaeus, who was a chief tax collector and also a wealthy man, was seeking to see who Jesus was; but he could not see him because of the crowd, for he was short in stature. So he ran ahead and climbed a sycamore tree in order to see Jesus, who was about to pass that way. Luke 19:2-4 We, like Zacchaeus, seek to know Jesus. All the hubbub of our lives, our anxieties, our daily struggles becomes our crowd. We too seek to get above the crowd to see Jesus. Join us on our annual trip to the Jesuit Retreat House, a place of peace and tranquility that will let us see above our crowd. You may not be radically transformed like Zacchaeus, but you will be forever changed by the experience. Come, receive him with joy (Luke 19:6) (turn to page 7) 5
