This quote of St. Catherine is a good one for us to reflect on in our contemporary age. There is not very much dying to self. In a very real way so many people today put themselves ahead of others. It is all about what I want. What will make me happy? What more can I accumulate? Thinking of self first has become the way so many people live. They look out for themselves before other people or the good of the community. We have become and we are raising the next generation to be self-centered. That does not bode well for the future. I believe it is very much different from the way things were a generation ago. Our faith is very clear we must die to self if we are going to really live. Certainly that is the way Jesus lived His life. This means we should be people of humility. There is nothing wrong with acknowledging our gifts and talents. However, we must always remember what we are able to accomplish in this life is by God s grace. On our own we could do nothing. With God s grace everything becomes possible. So since it is not about us, we use our gifts for the good of others. That is why God gave us these gifts. We are to use whatever we have not for our own personal benefit but rather for the good of other people. Living for others leads us to live for God. For our focus in life changes. When we put God and other people ahead of our self, it is then that we truly can do great things. We are living in the manner Jesus wants us to live. Let us ignore what society today says is important. May we die to self so that we can live for God. St. Catherine in her time established peace and concord between cities because she was on fire with the love of God. Perhaps if we heed Catherine s words dying to self and living for others, we will be on fire too with the love of God. God bless, Msgr. Duane Keep the Following in Your Prayers! 2 Right to Life PRO-LIFE MEDITATIONS ON THE JOYFUL MYSTERIES OF THE ROSARY By Fr. Frank Pavone Resurrection Christ is Risen! By his Resurrection, He has destroyed the power of death, and therefore the power of abortion. The outcome of the battle for Life has already been decided: Life is victorious! Let us pray that all pro-lifers will spread this victory to every segment of our society. The Ascension -By ascending to the Father's throne, Christ takes our human nature, given to us in the womb, to the heights of heaven. He shows us that human beings are made to be raised to heaven, not thrown in the garbage. Let us pray that the world may learn this truth and reject abortion. The Descent of the Holy Spirit The Holy Spirit is the Advocate: He pleads our cause, for we cannot save ourselves. We pray that He will make us advocates for the babies, who cannot speak or write or vote or protest or even pray. The Assumption The Blessed Virgin Mary was taken body and soul into heaven because she is the Mother of God. Mother and child are united. The Assumption reminds us that they belong together. We pray that society will see that it cannot love women while killing their children, and cannot save children without helping their mothers. We pray that people will be touched by the pro-life question, "Why can't we love them both?" The Coronation Mary is the Queen of the Universe. The Church teaches that she is the greatest creature, second only to God Himself. The Church defends the dignity of women. We pray that people will understand that to be pro-life means to be pro-woman, and that to be pro-woman demands that we be pro-life. Grand Knight s Report Brother Knights, On April I had the privilege to attend the Knights of Columbus State Convention in Appleton, WI as one of our Council delegates along with Deputy Grand Knight Ed Murphy. Our Council s 2013 History Book received a Gold rating. A special thanks to Past Grand Knight and Past District Deputy Paul Goretcke for all his work in putting the history book together. The biggest and longest day was Saturday which included the election of State officers followed by abanquet that evening. Brother Ron Foust of Cross Plains was elected State Deputy. He is a member and Fourth Degree Honor Guard of Assembly 1948 out of Waunakee. Congratulations to Brother Ron. I want to extend a Special Thanks to all who participated in the Welcome Home party at the Dane County Airport on Saturday, May 3 rd for our Badger Honor Flight recipient Brother Jim Kueffer. This same weekend was also the kick-off of our Council s Annual Tootsie Roll Drive. We especially want to remember Brother Chuck Orville in whose memory the new vests are embroidered and for Diane Orville s donation that made it possible for our Council to purchase these new vests. Pictures of the new vests are shown elsewhere in this newsletter. Please look at our Calendar of Events. There are three events that I would like to especially draw your attention to. The first is June 15 th (Father s Day). Our Council will be sponsoring Donut Sunday at St. Albert the Great Parish at all Sunday Masses. The Mass times are 8:00 and 10:30 AM. Please send me an (kc3dn4dknight@yahoo.com) if you can help at any of the Masses. The second one is June 23. Help is needed for the setup of the Sacred Hearts Rummage Sale. Please meet by the backdoor of the school gym at 6:00 PM on June 23rd. The third one is July 8 th, the installation of our Council Officers and Council Meeting. The July 8th meeting will be held at Sacred Hearts Church, not The Round Table, beginning with the installation of officers at 7:30 PM followed by a brief meeting and social in the Gathering Room. Some additional Council Standing Resolutions (17-22) are part of this newsletter. Please review them. These will be voted on at the June 10 th Council meeting, which is also the election of Council Officers for the term. The list of officers being nominated is also part of this newsletter. Nominations can also be made from the floor at June 10 th meeting. I encourage more Brother Knights to attend our Council meetings and on a more regular basis. Just for your information our meetings are getting shorter, not longer. The May 13 th meeting was less than 1 hour, approximately 42 minutes. A social follows each meeting. Mike

3 Council News & Events Update Your Beneficiaries Sometimes it is easy to overlook the simplest of things. Take, for example, the beneficiaries on your life insurance policies. If your policy was applied for and issued several years ago, it may very well be that the person you originally selected as the beneficiary is no longer the person you would want to receive the policy proceeds. If you bought the policy when you were single, for example, you may have named your parents as beneficiaries. If you have since married, your policies should be updated to reflect your spouse as beneficiary. Maybe you ve had children since, who are not named on the policies. Most people list a primary beneficiary, who is specifically designated as the first in priority to receive policy proceeds. We also encourage the naming of a contingent beneficiary, an alternate person designated to receive policy proceeds, usually in the event that the original beneficiary pre-deceases the insured. I routinely call all of my policyholders for annual review appointments, usually near the anniversary date of your policy that is, the date it was originally issued. One of the matters that I ll discuss during this review is the status of your beneficiary designations. If they need updating, and they often do, I can complete the paperwork during that appointment. I look forward to meeting with each of you to discuss your family s needs. For more information or other benefits please call me: Luke Meinholz, Knights of Columbus Field Agent Phone: luke.meinholz@kofc.org COUMBUS CORPORATION MEETING June 24 at 7:30 pm.
