The name of this Sunday indicates our desire for God s forgiveness that lies at the heart of these forty days. Today, also commemorates Adam and Eve s expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Paradise, because of their disobedience. Yet, despite of this, God did not give up on them. As we pray in matins for this day, We were expelled of old, O Lord, from the Garden of Eden, for wrongly eating from the tree. But, O my God and Savior, You once again have restored us through Your Cross and Your Passion. Thereby, O Master, fortify and enable us purely to finish Lent and to worship Your holy resurrection, Pascha our saving Passover, by the prayers of Your Mother Yes, Adam & Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, but as we glance at the Icon of the Resurrection behind our altar, we see that Our Lord restoring them back to life. This gift of new life awaits all of us at the conclusion of our journey through Great Lent.

The following have been given a general dispensation from fasting: - Persons who are spiritually or physically ill - sick and convalescent - those who work strenuously - pregnant women and nursing mothers - those who have reached the age of 60 years Bishops, pastors and confessors may grant a dispensation from the fasting guidelines in case of necessity, in conformity with the spirit of our Church. 6 Dearly Beloved in Christ! Pastoral Letterof the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops of Canada Announcing THE RELOCATION OF HOLY SPIRIT UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC SEMINARY To the Very Reverend Clergy, Monastics and Religious Sisters, Seminarians and Laity of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada: (The Lord said to Joshua) I command you: be firm and steadfast! Do not fear nor be dismayed, for the Lord, your God, is with you wherever you go! (Joshua 1:1,9) With the above words of Sacred Scripture in our minds we address you concerning a change in location of Holy Spirit Ukrainian Catholic Seminary, which, since its creation in 1980, has been located in Ottawa ON. When the Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky Institute of Eastern Christian Studies announced several years ago its plan to relocate to the University of Saint Michael College in the University of Toronto, the Ukrainian Catholic Bishops of Canada, who constitute the Seminary Board of Directors, began a process of discernment, together with the Seminary Rector, regarding the implications for the Seminary. The first question centered on the academic formation of our seminarians which until recently had been ensured through the theology programs at Ottawa s Saint Paul University and the Eastern theological programs provided by the Sheptytsky Institute affiliated with St. Paul University. Enquiries were made regarding the Sheptytsky Institute s new academic arrangements with St. Michael s College in Toronto. Information was also received regarding programs offered at Ottawa s St. Paul University, now without the participation of the Sheptytsky Institute. Discussions were also held with other academic centers, including those available at several institutions in Edmonton AB. The second question centered on a physical home for the Seminary. The present building in Ottawa could still be used if the Seminary remained in Ottawa, but as an older building it has been subject to ever increasing repairs over the years. Much time was spent visiting possible locations in the Toronto area. There the difficulty was finding a building suitable for the Seminary needs, within a reasonable travel distance to St. Michael s College and at a feasible price. The cost was clearly of concern even when considering the sale of the Ottawa location. A third option arose when the Basilian Fathers vacated their House of Studies in Edmonton, with the possibility of a lease or purchase agreement with the Seminary.

7 Invoking the divine help of the Holy Spirit, the patron of the Seminary, the bishops conducted much prayer and reflection in order to come to a decision, fully aware of the stages of formation of the present seminarians and the good will of many organizations and individuals desirous for the best outcome for the Seminary. The bishops have also been sensitive to the concerns of the faithful of each eparchy who provide the funding essential to the running and maintenance of the Seminary, notwithstanding the decline in parish memberships and slow depletion of available finances. With all this in mind, the bishops, as the Seminary Board of Directors, have decided to enter into a lease agreement with the Basilian Fathers (Order of St. Basil the Great) for their House of Studies in Edmonton AB, which will provide space suitable for the Seminary, including chapel, kitchen and dining room, library and study rooms, and rooms for the seminarians and staff. Seminarians will pursue a Master of Divinity program at Newman Theological College. In addition, internet and online educational opportunities are also available to our seminarians, in particular with the Sheptytsky Institute, providing ever increasing dimensions to seminary formation. In Sacred Scripture, we find various examples of journeys undertaken by the people of God in response to the call of the Lord, be it Abraham and Moses in the Old Testament, or the Holy Family in the New Testament. So too, Holy Spirit Seminary will now undertake a new direction in its pilgrim journey as a sacred institution, which we discern to be the call of the Lord not only to the staff and seminarians, but also to the clergy and faithful of the Ukrainian Catholic Church in Canada. And so, with the prayer from the Divine Liturgy we pray: Let us go forth in peace. In the name of the Lord! Sincerely Yours in Christ, + Lawrence Huculak, OSBM, Metropolitan Archbishop of Winnipeg + David Motiuk, Eparchial Bishop of Edmonton + Stephen Chmilar, Eparchial Bishop of Toronto + Ken Nowakowski, Eparchial Bishop of New Westminster + Bryan Bayda, C.Ss.R., Eparchial Bishop of Saskatoon 2/14 February, Feast of the Presentation of the Lord UCWLC Holy Eucharist Branch 71st Annual Daffodil Tea Sunday, March 4, 1:00 pm to 3:00 pm at Holy Eucharist Parish Centre. 8 Our The Garden of Eden Fr Bob Pagligari, CSsR God created Adam and Eve and placed them in a garden called Eden. The word Eden means God's garden or a place that is fruitful and has plenty of water. We were not only created in God's image and likeness but also formed from the rich ground of God's own garden. Therefore, besides being a ray of light that illuminates the faith of those who feel doubtful and a dash of salt that preserves the hope of those who feel discouraged, we are also a spiritual soil that can germinate seeds of love for those who feel lonely. In God's garden, we are a parcel of land for others. Lent is the perfect opportunity to ask ourselves: How is our patch of Eden growing? What weeding, tilling and attending to is needed in our section of God's good earth so that the kernels of evangelization can take root and flourish? The Covenantal Garden Through their disobedience to God's command, as well as our continued disobedience to God's covenant, Adam and Eve abused the beautiful garden God had given them. Instead of basking in innocence, they stripped leaves from the vines to cover their naked bodies. The lie of the forktongued serpent, who promised they would become as smart as God, quickly gave way to the truth. They discovered that once separated from the vine, branches and leaves wither away quickly and die. Whenever creatures defy the Creator, the joyful valley of Eden becomes a sorrowful valley of tears. The Garden of Gethsemane Each time we separate ourselves from the true vine we are choosing to stray from living heartily in God's garden and preferring to exist in a self-centered desert of heartbreak. Jesus saw our misguided choices when he himself agonized for us in the Garden of Gethsemane. Through tears of our own making we often cry out this question: Why, if God is all knowing, and all powerful and all benevolent, is suffering even permitted? The rhetorically convincing answer, albeit sadly erroneous, is that suffering must exist for the sake of free will. This reply works but it is deceiving. In place of such sophistry we should defer to St. Thomas Aquinas and remember that bad arguments for the sake of the faith bring bad credit upon the faith. Suffering exists so that we can intervene with mercy. Each time we see misery but refuse to pray for the downtrodden, we are refusing to show mercy and we are turning away from God and our neighbor. Each time we see starvation but refuse to fast and feed the hungry, we are refusing to show mercy and turning away from God and our neighbor. Each time we pass a homeless person and refuse to give alms, we are refusing to show mercy and turning away from God and our neighbor. Whenever we avoid an occasion to alleviate suffering we are prolonging hardship and thereby causing suffering. In the end, we are misusing our free will to hurt rather than help. As a substitute for giving praise to God and showing charity to our neighbor, we are turning away from both and preferring sin to virtue.

9 The Garden of Glory We humans began life in a garden and our salvation, our new life, was first made known to us in a garden. The sepulcher, which held the dead body of Jesus, was located in a garden. Three days after the crucifixion and burial, Mary Magdalen was so upset by his empty tomb that she mistook Christ for the gardener. In her joy at finally recognizing him, Magdalen desperately clung to the risen Lord and refused to let go. Christ gently reminded her, and us, that there is still much to be done in the garden of our world before we can ascend to the garden in paradise. Through our faith, our good works and our baptism into Christ's passion, death, resurrection and ascension, we have the potential to return to Eden. We can become fruitful and multiply the mercy God has shown to us by showing mercy to others. Baptism is God's Holy Spirit of living water bubbling up within us, as Jesus promised the woman at the well, to quench our thirst for righteousness. Our purpose on Earth is to transform our hardened hearts into natural hearts longing for that heavenly space which God desires for each of us. How can we bring about this transformation? Our Lenten Garden We can prepare for our space in heaven by examining our space on earth. How orderly are we? What does our space look like? Is the space where we live and work very cluttered? Lent is a wonderful time to get organized. To tidy up our home and our workspace, we can begin by examining the state of our hearts and our souls. How readily do we receive God and others? Are the different gardens of our lives strewn with shriveled up leaves that are dying because we have separated ourselves from the true, life-giving vine? Do we ignore the expiration date of canned goods in our cupboards until we are forced to toss this sustenance into the garbage while the shelves of food pantries for the poor become barren? Have we accrued so much furniture and clothing that we need stackable bins to store our excess while the aisles at the St. Vincent de Paul stores fall empty? Like any seasoned grower, every Christian knows there are plagues of pests threatening to prevent the growth of our attempts to be kind and compassionate. Temptations to prolong the disobedience of our progenitors towards God abound. Lent is a time to rid our gardens-our homes, our workspaces, our hearts and our souls-of those allures that exclude God and shun others. The cultivating tools we need are easily available. They are prayer, fasting and almsgiving. All we have to do is put them into practice. Then our garden of Gethsemane will become a renewed garden of Eden. Our garden of Covenant will become a garden of Glory toward God and a welcoming haven for all. For the duration of Lent, let's place a symbol of our interior garden, like a flower, in our kitchen and at our workspace. Each morning when we see this reminder we can ask ourselves: What can I do today to de-clutter my house, my heart and my soul so that all of my gardens are properly prepared to receive my struggling neighbor and my risen Lord this Easter?
