2 Jacksonville, Florida April 17-18, 2010 The Annual Meeting of the Order was held at the Hyatt Regency Riverfront Hotel in Jacksonville, Florida. Sixty-eight new Knights and Ladies were invested as members of the Order. One hundred twenty-three Knights and Ladies were promoted to higher rank. Prior to the start of the general meeting, a meeting of the Southeastern Council, chaired by Lieutenant Capritto, was held on April 16. A number of items of business of the Order were discussed. Lieutenant Capritto announced that contracts had been signed for the next annual meeting to be held in New Orleans, LA on May, Also at the Council meeting, our longserving Chancellor, Dr. Kenneth McLeod, Jr., KGCHS, announced his retirement from that position. At the Saturday orientation meeting for new members, investees received their instructions for the Mass of Investiture. The meeting also featured a talk by Prof. Thomas E. McKiernan, KGCHS, a member of the Grand Magisterium and a member also of the Holy Land Commission. Sir Thomas explained to the members how the charitable funds sent to the Holy Land are used to support educational and other social welfare activities. Also on the program at the Saturday meeting was Brother David Carroll, Ph.D., FSC, KGCHS. Br. David, a frequent speaker at meetings of the Order, presented an excellent slide show describing the history of the Order and of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. The Saturday Memorial Mass and Vigil Service were held at St. Matthew Church. Our host bishop, Most Rev. Victor Galeone, was the homilist for the Mass. Saturday evening featured a black tie reception followed by a dinner dance. Sunday morning, following a continental breakfast in the hotel lobby, Lieutenant Capritto called the annual business meeting to order. Members heard reports from Chancellor Sir Kenneth McLeod, MD, KGCHS, from our Secretary, Sir Merrill Landwher, KCHS, and from Treasurer Sir Warren Backer, KGCHS. Members also heard an excellent lecture and slide presentation on the conditions in the Holy Land from Anna Baltzer, an American Jewish woman, who spoke at the 2009 meeting in Charleston, SC as well. The Sunday Investiture Mass was also celebrated at St. Matthew Church. Our Grand Prior, Archbishop Gregory Aymond, KC*HS was principal celebrant and homilist. Sunday evening featured a white tie reception and dinner banquet. Knights and Ladies departed on Monday morning following a Traveler's Mass. 3 Thank You Dr. McLeod Long-Serving Chancellor Announces His Retirement Sir Kenneth E. McLeod, Jr., MD, KGCHS announced his retirement as Chancellor of the Southeastern Lieutenancy at the conclusion of the 2010 Council meeting in Jacksonville, Florida. Sir Kenneth was a practicing physician and teacher of medicine for many years in his native New Orleans. He has served for eight years as Chancellor of our Lieutenancy. Anyone who had occasion to call the Lieutenancy business office could usually count on Dr. McLeod being at his post daily after about 3 p.m. He was unfailingly gracious and helpful in dealing with problems rarely, if ever, of his making involving nominations for membership in the Order and the paperwork necessary to get everything to Rome in a timely manner. Knights and Ladies of the Southeastern Lieutenancy owe Dr. McLeod a sizeable debt of gratitude for his faithful service. 6 Diocese of Allexandria ews From The Sections On January 10, 2010 the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Natchitoches, LA., was dedicated as a Minor Basilica, making it one of only sixty-seven in the United States. The Mass and celebration began with a street procession into the church that included descendants of local Native American Indians, French and Spanish ensigns, the Knights of Columbus, altar servers, the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre, and pastors and lay representatives of every church parish in the Diocese of Alexandria. The Umbrellino and Bell, symbols of a basilica, were received by the Most Reverend Ronald P. Herzog, Bishop of the Diocese of Alexandria who was the principal celebrant of the Mass. The Most Reverend Gregory Aymond, Archbishop of New Orleans was the homilist. Concelebrants included the Most Rev. Michael Duca, Bishop of Shreveport; the Most Rev. Michael Jarrell, Bishop of Lafayette; the Most Rev. Alfred Hughes, retired Archbishop of New Orleans; and Most Rev. Dominic Carmen, retired Auxiliary Bishop of New Orleans. This event kicked off the year long 100 th anniversary celebration of the Diocese of Alexandria. Local members of the EOHSJ invited to take part in the procession and Mass were L to R: Sir Charles Roque, Lady Marguerite Picou, Lady Elaine Bacon, Lady Margaret Wheat- Carter, Sir Henry Kinberger, Lady Judith Kinberger, Lady Elizabeth Hertzog and Lady Lucille Ingram. 6

7 ews From The Sections, Continued Diocese of Charleston On April 6, 2010, The Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone, Bishop of Charleston, installed The Reverend Father Hayden J. Vaverek, KHS, as Pastor of St. Joseph Catholic Church and School, Anderson, South Carolina. After the Mass, Bishop Guglielmone (on the right) and Father Hayden (on the left) shared a relaxing moment with Sir Duke Stern, KCHS and Lady Becky Stern, LCHS, who served as honor guards for the gift bearers. Diocese of Baton Rouge Many Knights & Ladies sponsored and attended the annual Deo Gratias Dinner for St. Joseph Seminary College held at the Catholic Life Center in Baton Rouge. Host Bishop, Most Rev. Robert W. Muench, introduced Archbishop Gregory Aymond, new Archbishop of New Orleans. The evening began with Vespers in the Chapel with Abbot Justin Brown, O.S.B. presiding, followed by a reception and dinner by Chef John Folse. A delegation of Knights & Ladies led by Sir Donald J. Broussard, KC*HS, participated in the annual Thanksgiving Vigil Mass at St. John the Evangelist Church in Plaquemine, La. (aka the Cathedral of the Bayou). They were received at the Rectory by Rev. Cleo Milano, KHS, Pastor. The Bishop Ott 4 th Degree KC Assembly honored as the Knight of the Year, Sir Leonard Hayes, KC*HS, and as Family of the Year, the family of Sir John Nowak, KHS.. The Knights & Ladies hosted their annual Feast in honor of Our Lady Queen of Palestine on Nov 4 th at St. Joseph Cathedral. The Mass was celebrated by Bishop Robert W. Muench with Very Rev. Paul Counce, Pastor, concebrating. 7 Diplomas were presented to the Investees and Promotees from Charleston. Deceased members and family members were remembered during the Mass. After Mass, a dinner buffet was held at the Parish Hall. Knights & Ladies attending Midnight Mass celebrated by Bishop Robert W. Muench at St. Joseph Cathedral were: Sirs & Ladies; Paul & Deanna Burns, Leonard Hayes, John & Faye Heroman, Harvey & Adrienne Honore, John, Nancy & Christine Nowak, Frank & Katherine Mayer, Claire Schexnayder, and Stephen & Cheryll Thomas. They were welcomed by Very Rev. Paul Counce, Pastor. The Choir performed a concert of selections from Handel's "Messiah prior to the Mass. Diocese of Palm Beach Lady Sophie M. Prendergrast, LGCHS, a longtime and very active member of the Order passed away on December 18, Her funeral was held at St. Thomas More Parish in Boynton Beach. Members of the Order acted as honorary pallbearers. Lieutenancy ews Lieutenant Capritto has appointed Sir Raymond J. Garrity, D.Ed., KGCHS, as Vice Chancellor for the Southeastern Lieutenancy. Sir Raymond is a professional educator who most recently served as Chancellor of the Delgado Community College in New Orleans. Dr. Garrity received his B.S. and M.S. degrees from Loyola University in New Orleans and his Doctor of Education Degree from Indiana University. He served as a science and chemistry instructor for ten years in New Orleans public schools and also served on the faculty of the LSU Medical Center in New Orleans. Dr. Garrity is a life long Catholic who has served in many volunteer positions at his home parish, St. Ann Church and National Shrine in Metairie, LA.

8 Save The Date 2011 Annual Meeting May 27-29, ew Orleans, LA Deceased Members Capes Capes from deceased members may be sent to the Latin Patriarch in Jerusalem to be used when members receive their Pilgrim Shell, eliminating the need to carry capes from the US for the ceremony. Head wear and jewelry should not be sent. The cost is usually around $20. They can be sent to the address below with a notation that it is the cape of a deceased member (name) and ask that they be remembered at Mass. Lieutenancy Pilgrimages to the Holy Land Reservations are still being received for both of our 2010 pilgrimages.
