EQUESTRIAN ORDER OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE OF JERUSALEM Northern Lieutenancy of the United States The Squire Vol. 26 No. 3 Fall 2014 Annual Meeting Recap By James Broski, KC*HS The Annual Meeting and Investiture in Denver was a wonderful success no matter how you measure it. From the large number of Knight and Ladies who trekked west to the beautiful liturgies and spiritual talks, the event delivered an impressive program. The host committee, led by Sir Patrick and Lady Joan Bridges, welcomed over 600 Knights and Ladies. For those of you who made it to Denver I am sure that you share my thoughts. As I reflect on the highlights of the weekend, my thoughts focus on two items: liturgical beauty and spiritual focus. The Catholic Church is blessed with impressive churches and cathedrals that give glory to God. Denver s Holy Ghost Church and the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception are two such examples. Adding to the beauty of the liturgy was the flawless orchestration of the liturgical details. Many thanks to the Archbishop Samuel J. Aquila, Archbishop of Denver, the Archdiocese of Denver s Office of Liturgy and our Colorado Chaplain, Rev. Fr. Fred Gaglia, KC*HS, and the volunteers who worked many hours in preparation and behind the scenes. Music and the choral contributions were grace-filled and just plain beautiful. Dr. Mark Lawlor, led the music and directed the St. John Vianney Seminary Scola choir with precision. Similar to prior Annual Meetings there was business to attend to including updates from our Lieutenant, Treasurer and Secretary. The Grand Magisterium report was provided by Vice Governor General, Sir Patrick Powers, KGCHS. Br. Peter Bray from Bethlehem University shared insights on the university and its unique role as an oasis of peace. The Denver meeting added on the foundations of prior annual meetings by the insightful placement of spiritual talks. Fr. Scott Traynor, Rector, of St. John Vianney Seminary, provided all with a formula to improve prayer lives and to grow in union with Jesus Christ. Most Rev. Samuel J. Aquila, KC*HS, Archbishop of Denver, shared insights and then led the entire assembly in prayer. What a gift it was to have total silence in the main meeting room as Knights and Ladies reflected on scriptural passages! Dr. Tim Gray, PhD, of the Augustine Institute, continued the spiritual theme with his talk in which he related how the Holy Land is the 5th Gospel. 1 A Prayer for Knights & Ladies Adapted by His Excellency Patrick Powers, KGCHS, Vice Governor General, from a Prayer by St. Theresa of Avila Christ has no body in the Holy Land but ours. No hands, but ours. No feet, but ours. Our eyes are the eyes to which the compassion of Christ looks upon the Holy Land. Ours are the feet with which he goes about His work doing good. Ours are the hands which he blesses His people in the Holy Land. We the Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem are His hands, His feet, His eyes and His body in the Holy Land. Deus Lo Volt God Wills It. Amen.

Knights and Ladies Together in Denver,

Grand Master Visits Minnesota Knights and Ladies of the Minnesota Area recently had the privilege of spending an evening with the Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, His Eminence, Edwin Cardinal O Brien. Most Reverend John C. Nienstedt, KC*HS, Archbishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis had extended an open invitation to Cardinal O Brien to visit Minnesota when it might be convenient in the Cardinal s schedule to do so. As a result, it was our pleasure to welcome His Eminence to Minnesota on September 30th! We were further honored when Lieutenant, Sir P. Thomas Pogge, KGCHS, and Lady Anne Pogge, LGCHS accepted our invitation and were able to be in attendance. The evening began at the Cathedral of Saint Paul where the Cardinal presided at Mass. Con-celebrating with the Cardinal were Most Reverend John C. Nienstedt, KC*HS, Most Reverend Lee A. Piché, Auxiliary Bishop of Saint Paul and Minneapolis, Most Reverend Donald J. Kettler, Bishop of Saint Cloud, Most Reverend Bernard Harrington, KC*HS, Bishop Emeritus of Winona, and many priests who are members of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre. After Mass, the Knights and Ladies convened at Town & Country Club of Saint Paul. During the cocktail reception, many knights and ladies took advantage of Cardinal O Brien s offer for a moment of conversation and photos. After dinner, His Eminence reflected on his experience during the recent conclave. He noted that the work of the Holy Spirit was powerful and evident during the days of the conclave. He reiterated the call to personal holiness for each of us as knights and ladies. He also asked for continued prayers for Christians in the Holy Land, and in particular, for the Latin Patriarch, Fouad Twal who is facing incredible trials, recently epitomized during the Gaza conflict. News from Area Councillors 3 In August, the Governor General of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre, Agostino Borromeo, made a special request for funds that would be sent to the Holy Land to help alleviate the suffering of the Christians there. After Cardinal O Brien s remarks, the Minnesota Area presented a check to him for $18,050 to be used for this purpose. In addition, Sir Thomas Pogge was able to present an additional check to the Cardinal from the rest of the Northern Lieutenancy in the amount of $88,600. Vice Governor General Thanks All Knights and Ladies By James Broski, KC*HS, Co Editor At the annual meeting Sir Patrick Powers, KGCHS, Vice Governor General, updated the attendees on the projects the Order has supported in the Holy Land. He said You are on the front lines ensuring a continued Christian presence. He thanked all Knights and Ladies for funding what it costs to run the 43 schools of the Latin Patriarchate educating 19,000 students. He said these schools exist because of you. He went on to add specific thanks to all for: Building the Stella Maris parish church in Aqaba, Jordan with only 18 Catholic families but serves a huge number of visitors each week. Repairing the hydro-therapy pool in Amman, Jordan. The pool offers therapy for disabled youth and was out of service for some time. Making summer school possible for many students. Renovating the St. Vincent Home in Ain Karen serving disabled young adults by adding a wheelchair lift. Contributing over 80% of the Archdiocese of Jerusalem s operating budget. Making it possible for every child who wants to get a Catholic education in the Holy Land to get one.

Unique Honor Bestowed Lieutenant of Honor, Sir Donald Drake, KGCHS, was a recipient of a very rare award: The Gold Palm. The award was conferred by H. E. Patrick Powers, KGCHS, Vice Governor General at the Annual Meeting and Investiture in Denver, CO. The Gold Palm reflects leadership, service and distinguished contributions to the Order over many years. Congratulations Sir Donald for your wonderful service. Investiture Experience A Priest Knight s Perspective By Rev. Fr. Anthony Romero, KHS Lady Roberta Livie, LHS, Fr. Anthony Romero, KHS, Sir Brian Livie, KHS I was blessed to be invested into the Order this past September 21st during our annual meeting in Denver. What a wonderful experience it was! During the weekend I met many wonderful Knights, Ladies. Priests and Bishops in our Lieutenancy. Those encounters left me very impressed with the outpouring of love and faith that I experienced. Not only was I impressed with the deep faith of this group, but also the welcome I received from everyone, including my brother priests. I have been a Roman Catholic priest for nine years and in that time I have traveled to many locations in the world. I am retired and live in Albuquerque, NM. My travels have brought me to Colorado Springs in recent years where I have assisted at Our Lady of the Pines. That is where I met Fr. Andrej Szczesnowicz, KHS, Pastor at Our Lady of the Pines and some dear friends, Lady Nancy and Sir Jay Barnwell, Lady Roberta and Sir Brian Livie and many others. His Excellency, Michael J. Sheridan, KC*HS, Bishop of Colorado Springs, recommended me for membership and investiture into our Order. The wonderful events, liturgies and welcoming I received over the weekend reminded me that the Catholic faith is very much alive in the 21st century. Mary Queen of Palestine pray for us. See you next year in Minneapolis. Peace and Justice Update By Sir John and Lady Joanie Muehlberger, Peace and Justice Chairs Many Knights and Ladies have expressed interest is doing something more for our fellow Christians in the Holy Land. That something more would provide the opportunity to directly assist those in need with contributions to support education and other programs. Such support would be outside of the annual contribution responsibility for members. We are pleased to report that progress has been made with respect to this initiative and the framework for the program is being developed. In the very near future, the local Councillors will be updated and next spring details will be released to all members. We are thrilled with the prospects of delivering an added means to support the Holy Land and meet the desires of fellow Knights and Ladies. Save the Date 2015 Annual Meeting and Investiture Minneapolis, St. Paul September st Requiescant in Pace With respect and affection, we call the attention of our fellow Knights and Ladies to those members of the Northern Lieutenancy who have died recently. In accordance with the privileges of the Order, His Beatitude Fouad Twal and the Grand Prior, Archbishop Naumann, will provide individual Masses for each of these recently departed: Sir David E. Abboud, KCHS Lady Helen Bisanz, LGCHS (previously inactive) Lady Eliese I. Brown, LGCHS Sir Harold G. Butzer, KCHS Sir William J. Duensing, KGCHS (previously inactive) Sir William M. Kryger, KC*HS (previously inactive) Sir Robert W. Lannan, Jr., KGCHS Sir William B. Madden, KHS Deacon Donald Orscheln, KGCHS Lady Isabelle A Salvador, LHS Rev. 5 Northern Lieutenancy Holy Land Pilgrimage Latin Patriarchate of the Northern Lieutenancy pilgrimage group with spiritual leader Most Rev. Samuel J. Aquila, KC*HS, Archbishop of Denver Reflections by Dave Fitzgerald, KHS and Jane Fitzgerald, LHS Be not afraid. These words from Pope Saint John Paul II inspired us and fortified us as we set off on the annual Holy Land pilgrimage of the Equestrian Order Holy Sepulcher Jerusalem (EOHSJ), for the Northern Lieutenancy Led by the Most Reverend Samuel J. Aquila, KC*HS, Archbishop of Denver. In spite of lingering tensions in the area as we have seen and that continue to escalate in the Holy Land, our small group of 23 pilgrims were blessed to travel to this sacred land to walk in the footsteps of our Lord. Every day of this trip is amazing and it is difficult to summarize such a wonderful experience in a few short words. For us, the Solemn Entry and Mass at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the visit to Al Misdar Parish and School in Amman Jordan and the visit to Bethlehem University, were some of the most memorable moments of the pilgrimage and influenced formation of three profound reflections. First, the importance that all those who live in the Holy Land, Christians, Muslims and Jews find ways to live in peace, achieve social harmony and obtain economic stability. The schools, both supported by the Equestrian Order, are fostering these ideals and they are flourishing. In spite of their differences, and all of the tensions and hostilities surrounding them, these young people of all faiths are hopeful of a better future. Their dreams are big and their attitudes so positive. It is clear the Equestrian Order is making a difference in their lives and their futures. Second, the heighted security reminded us of the parallel situation that catalyzed the founding of the EOHSJ and the important relevance of our continued support to the Holy Sepulcher and all that it represents in today s world. Bishop Schomali of the Latin Patriarchate, who presented our group with our Pilgrim Shells, asked us to bring back the message that Pilgrimages are safe and so vitally necessary for continued solidarity. Finally, the landscape of Christ s life and ministry seemed to be mystically summarized by the architecture of the Holy Sepulcher. It s just around the corner entrance brought to mind Jesus humble lifestyle; but then it s majestic interior, compactly covering key passion and resurrection sites surrounded by hundreds of fervent pilgrims, symbolized God s awesome salvation plan for all humanity. The adroit management of the sites and complex activities within the church by multiple faith traditions gives hope to future unity for Christianity. All of this was wonderfully introduced for us for further personal reflection and relevance by Archbishop Aquila s daily homilies and the cultural, historic and biblical background by our Franciscan guide Father David Wathen, KHS. Oh and yes, some of us did take a very salty float in the Dead Sea, including Father Baptist Fernandes, OCD, who represented all four clergy in therapeutic (but very spiritual) muddiness! We encourage all members of the Order to prayerfully consider making this trip; it will change your life. Be not afraid. 5

EQUESTRIAN ORDER OF THE HOLY SEPULCHRE OF JERUSALEM Northern Lieutenancy Squire Editors: Sir James Broski, KC*HS Lady Suzanne Broski, LC*HS 9299 S. Lark Sparrow Trail Highlands Ranch, CO PRESORTED FIRST-CLASS MAIL U.S. POSTAGE PAID ST.LOUIS, MO PERMIT # 4400 Fr. Dana Christensen, KHS, Ecclesiatical Master of Ceremonies Advent Reflections - Light Into Darkness By Fr. Dana Christensen, KHS, Ecclesiastical Master of Ceremonies It is hard to believe that Advent is nearly upon us once again, and thanks be to God for that! Advent, being the beginning of a new liturgical year is a time to begin again, and if you are anything like me, I need new beginnings very often. Every year when Advent approaches I am struck by how, at least in our hemisphere, the natural world around us speaks to the need for the Light of the world. As the days grow shorter and shorter and the darkness becomes greater, our longing for light becomes very tangible. The world around us reminds us that Jesus came into the world to bring light to darkness. The world in which we live can often be overwhelmingly dark. The darkness of a world sinking deeper and deeper into sin. The darkness of a world where Christianity is increasingly under attack. The darkness of a world where hundreds, and even thousands, of our fellow Christians are being killed or exiled for no other reason than that they profess that Jesus is Lord. All of these things can make us feel the heaviness of darkness. But as believers in Christ, the Light of the World, there is no need for us to fear, for Christ came in the darkness of night in the midst of poverty during a time of persecution to overcome the darkness through the light of love. This Advent, let us redouble our efforts to bring about the light of Christ through our acts of charity and our fearless defense of the truth that Jesus is Lord. Let us pray fervently for our brothers and sisters who live in the darkness of poverty, persecution, and war, especially those who live in the Land where the Light of the World first appeared. In doing this, we will be doing our part to cooperate with Jesus in bringing His light into a world filled with darkness. 6
