P.7 Dear Knights and Ladies, In eight short weeks when we convene our 2011 Investiture we will have the pleasure of welcoming 70 new members and to congratulate 72 promoted members. Our Lieutenancy membership number is closing in on 1300 Knights and Ladies. On the global scale during 2010 our Order achieved three firsts ie the largest number of members in history: more than 28,000; the largest amount of donations ever received: $13.7 million; the largest number of jurisdictions: 58 with new ones in Brasil Russia,South Africa and Italy. Our contributions allow the Latin Patriarch to accomplish a great deal of significant work by a very small but dedicated staff of priests, nuns and laymen whose success impacts and motivates Christians moving forward in our faith.their challenges in life in the Holy land remind us that our day to day blessings are a gift from God who provides us with all we need. Our faith, our members and our charity are the cornerstones on which the foundation of our Order are built. The Holy Land has a special signifigance for Christians, Jews and Muslims. The Christians however face tremendous difficulties because of their minority status which brings about ever increasing alienation and injustice. One can ask Will our Church continue to exist there or will the holy places become just a mere Christian museum? The answer depends on each one of us expressed by our generosity and prayers. Please keep Cardinal Foley in your prayers. He has been a special grace to the Order and he will be sorely missed. It is an honor to serve as your Lieutenant. Charles H. Foos, KC*HS

2 North-Central Lieutenancy of the USA Lieutenancy Member Participates In Rome Conference Grand Prior Francis Cardinal George, OMI, KGCHS Lieutenant Sir Charles Foos, KGCHS Chancellor Sir Gerald J. Zobrist, KGCHS Lieutenancy member Thomas McKiernan of Cincinnati was a participant in the May 27 conference highlighting the educational and societal benefits of the ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD [OLPC] project, headquartered at MIT in Boston, Massachusetts. The Order of the Holy Sepulchre sponsored the conference and is also investigating a pilot project to bring the XO computer to the students of the schools of the Latin Patriarchate. Over two million of these multi functional computers are now in place in some of the most distressed locations in the world. McKiernan, the project coordinator, said the OLPC mission is to empower the worlds underprivileged children through education by means of this rugged, low-cost, low-power, connected laptop. Children will become connected to each other, to the world and to a brighter future. More information about the OLPC initiative can be found at LAPTOP.ORG. 3 Not Elementary: A Knight s New Book On Sherlock Holmes North Central Lieutenancy member Sir Dan Andriacco, KHS, author of the books Screen Saved: Peril and Promise of Media in Ministry, and Taming the Media Monster: The Family Guide to Television, Internet and All the Rest, has a new book on completely different subject. It s Baker Street Beat: An Eclectic Collection of Sherlockian Scribblings, published recently by MX Publishing of London, England. Although he was almost certainly not Catholic, Sherlock Holmes worked for Pope Leo XIII on at least two occasions the sudden death of Cardinal Tosca and the theft of the Vatican cameos, Andriacco said. These are adventures that are mentioned in passing by Dr. Watson, with no details given. I m surprised that Holmes wasn t granted a papal knighthood for this service to the Holy See. Or perhaps he was Dr. Watson just didn t mention it! Andriacco s book is a collection of essays, short stories and radio plays written over several decades. Two of the four essays are new a nostalgic look at the author s nearly 50 years of reading the Sherlock Holmes stories, and an account of a pilgrimage to the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland, where Holmes was reported to have perished in a fight with Professor Moriarty. One of the radio plays, The Wrong Cab, was produced in Cincinnati and broadcast nationally by National Public Radio some years ago. It is both a fantasy and a traditional murder mystery solved by Sherlock Holmes through rational means. Why the fascination with Sherlock Holmes? I think there are a lot of reasons why Holmes has remained popular for 125 years while most of his contemporaries have been long forgotten, Andriacco said. Of course they are great stories with clever plots and sometimes exciting action set in a time period that we look back on with nostalgia. They re also very well written. But it is the memorable characters especially the commanding, reassuring figure of Holmes himself and the loyal Dr. Watson that bring us back to the stories again and again long after we know how the mystery is solved. Andriacco also has a new blog, Bakerstreetbeat.blogspot.com, in which he takes a light-hearted look two or three times a week at fun topics related to the world s best-known detective. I haven t written about Holmes and the Vatican yet in the book or the blog, although some day I might, Andriacco said. I might also explore the subject of knighthood. Holmes refused a British knighthood, but his creator Sir Arthur Conan Doyle accepted the honor. His tombstone reads, in part, Steel True, Blade Straight, Arthur Conan Doyle, Knight. Baker Street Beat is available from Amazon.com or from 5th Annual Holy Family Conference in Kokomo, Indiana Knights and Ladies of the Equestrian order of the Holy Sepulchre (Indiana Section) were invited to join Bishop Timothy Doherty of the the Diocese of Lafayette, in the celebration of Mass at the 5th Annual Holy Family Conference in Kokomo, Indiana, on Sunday May 22, The Holy Family Conference focuses on building up the Domestic Church - the Catholic Family. Bishop Doherty is completing his 1st year as Bishop and warmly greeted the Knights and Ladies following the Mass. 3

4 More News and Info on the Web Grand Magisterium of the Order The Spirituality of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre Sir William J. Bobowicz, Jr., PsyD, KC*HS 4 curia/institutions_ connected/oessh/ ~ Latin Patriarchate ~ EOHS of J in the USA ~ Catholic Near East Welfare Association home-us.aspx New Manager of Lieutenancy s Website Dr. Peter Fletcher has accepted the task of managing the website for the North Central Lieutenancy. The site has been restructured and will provide a wide range of news and features. The website address remains the same: www. holysepulchre.net We all express our gratitude to Dr. Fletcher for his exceptional work. Over the years I have heard it discussed that we the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem have a spirituality and our spiritual lives are the primary work of our order. Yet, do we know to what spirituality is being referred? Many religious orders have a spirituality that flows from their charisms (gifts of grace). Franciscan charism and spirituality focus on poverty so to live out the Gospel more faithfully, Dominican charism and spirituality center on spreading the Word of God through dynamic preaching, and Jesuit charism and spirituality emanates from their motto of Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam (For the Greater Glory of God) whereas the pursuit of knowledge is an end in itself as it leads to greater understanding of God. So what is the EOHSJ charism that pilots our spirituality? Before I go further I must make a caveat that I am neither a theologian, nor an expert at really anything. I am simply positing my observations to begin a dialogue as to who we are. I hope it does not end here, but generates further discussions. When asked what the purpose of our order is, most knights and ladies can state it is to protect the Christians in the Holy Land. However, as I began this article, it is really the development of our spiritual lives because without that, our work to protect the Holy Land Christians would quickly fizzle. We would become depressed and hopeless that there is no end to this centuries old struggle. While not a vowed professed religious order, we are still a Catholic order with a charism. Our charism is pilgrimage to the empty tomb. It is the empty tomb that gives us meaning. With a body in the tomb, it would be a nice place to visit, but it would have never moved empires. The empty tomb is what motivated the first official pilgrim, Saint Helena, to make the perilous journey to Jerusalem and it continues to move thousands of others year after year. It is the empty tomb that led Godfrey to establish religious and knights to protect it from destruction. And why all of this struggle for an empty tomb? Because it is a guidepost to heaven. Christ left it to us to say, I did it. Heaven does exist and you can do it, too. This, ultimately, is our life-goal: to reach heaven. This should be the goal for all humanity and even more so for a Knight or Lady of the Holy Sepulchre. Like all pilgrimages, we have to make sacrifices to complete the journey, we have to be dedicated, and we have to stay focused on the target destination. Even when we choose the wrong path, by being continuously vigilant we can evaluate our path to make sure it is taking us to the pilgrimage goal and quickly return to the right path when we have veered off. Finally, we must have strength for the journey. To do so, we keep our minds, bodies, and spirits strong, yet flexible. As our EOHSJ charism is the motivation to make and support pilgrimages to the Holy Sepulchre, our spirituality that flows from that charism is to be who we are knights and ladies warriors, protectors, guardians noblemen. Noblemen are called to have strength so to be able to defend and protect. Noblemen are called to exercise mind, body, and spirit to our full capacities to carry out the mission and charism. Noblemen are called to sacrifice comfort and resources for the journey and those on the journey. Finally, noblemen stay committed and directed towards the goal of the pilgrimage so that not only they will reach that destination, but they will assist others in reaching the destination. Remember in the Gospel according to Matthew (25:14-30), we are given talents gifts or charisms from the Lord. We must not hide or bury them but invest them well to grow and be shared with others. As Knights and Ladies of the Holy Sepulchre, we begin our spirituality and charism from the goal of wanting to reach the Holy Sepulchre, the empty tomb, only to find it is a marker to our final goal to heaven and assurance of eternal life. In turn,

Finally, as noblemen we are driven to bring as many people as we can on the pilgrimage so that they, too, can enjoy paradise. Our charism is making pilgrimage, our spirituality is that of chivalry.
