The Page Summer 2014 Vol. XXVII, No. 3 Cardinal O Brien Appoints Sir Max Douglas Brown Sir Charles Foos to Step Down as Lieutenant Letter from Sir Charles Foos Life is a series of new beginnings, and our Lieutenancy will have a new beginning on September 28, My term as Lieutenant will end at the conclusion of our annual meeting. Article 47 of our Constitution establishes an age limit, which makes me ineligible for another term. I am therefore very pleased to announce that our Grand Master, Cardinal O Brien, has named Max Brown to be the next Lieutenant of the North Central Lieutenancy at the conclusion of my term. Going forward, Max and I will work together to make a smooth transition to this new leadership. Max has devotedly served as Secretary for the past four years and is very familiar with the administration of our Council and its relationship with Cardinal George. His working experience and legal background will serve our Council well, and his sense of urgency will move us forward. Once installed, new Lieutenants have the option to appoint or reappoint those individuals they wish to be part of their administration. If you have a desire to be considered for a Council position or no longer wish to serve, let Max know in confidence. If your term ends or you are replaced, accept the change with grace and the knowledge of having served well. You will always have my esteem and gratitude for your contribution. I look forward to working with Max in fidelity and friendship and ask you to do the same in the spirit of service to our Risen Lord. Charles H. Foos, Lieutenant Sir Max Douglas Brown, KCHS, will succeed His Excellency Charles Foos as Lieutenant of the North Central Lieutenancy, effective at the end of the 2014 Annual Meeting. Sir Max was General Counsel for Rush University Medical Center in Chicago for 32 years until his retirement in A writer and speaker on health law, medical ethics and dispute resolution, he held academic appointments at Rush University, Loyola University School of Law and Dominican University. He received a Bachelor of Canon Law degree from St. Paul University (Ottawa) in The immediate past Governor of the Illinois Society of the Descendants of the Mayflower, he is an active genealogical researcher. He and his wife, Lady Mary Anne, are parishioners of St. Luke Parish in River Forest, Illinois.
Scholarship Students Earn Degrees at Bethlehem University Three recipients of the Bishop Morlino Annual Scholarship, Grace Bannoura, Zacharia George Matar, and Elias Bannoura, graduated from Bethlehem University on 13 June Within weeks they started working as professional nurses at the Holy Family Hospital in Bethlehem. They are most grateful for the support of the North Central Lieutenancy for the past three years. You can find a link to a short video from the three students thanking members of the North Central Lieutenancy for their support via the Bishop Morlino Educational Fund at I would honestly like to thank you very much from the bottom of my heart for this opportunity that you have given us, because without you, I would not have continued my education, said Matar in the video. I would like to give thanks first to God and then to you for giving this opportunity. In the video the students invited members of the North Central Lieutenancy to join them to celebrate Christmas. Founded in 1973, Bethlehem University now has 3,200 undergraduate students and 327 Masters students. As of 2013 it has graduated 14, 244 students. It has programs in arts, science, digital media. nursing, health science and education. Prior to 1973, the year Bethlehem University was founded, Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip had to seek higher education abroad. The university now actively contributes to delivering the town s universal messages of peace and goodwill as it serves the aspirations of the Palestinian people. Knowing that there are people like you standing in solidarity with Christians here is a major factor in keeping hope alive, said Br. Peter Bray, Vice Chancellor, in a letter of gratitude last February. 2 The Page Zacharia George Matar Grace Bannoura Elias Bannoura
Benefit Dinner for Bethlehem University The Chicago and Joliet Sections of the North Central Lieutenancy joined together to hold a benefit for Bethlehem University on November 1, 2013 at the Oak Park Country Club. 136 guests attended the gala event, including Cardinal Francis George, Bishop Raymond Goedert of Chicago, Bishop Joseph Siegel of Joliet, the Very Reverend Thomas Baima of the Archdiocesan Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs Office, and numerous other honored guests. His Excellency Charles Foos presented Brother Peter Bray, the Vice-Chancellor and CEO of Bethlehem University, with a check for $10,000. In addition, over $7,000 was donated to the University by individual donors. Brother Peter Bray conferred an honorary doctorate upon Brother James Gaffney, President of Lewis University. Both Bethlehem University and Lewis University are sponsored by the De La Salle Christian Brothers. In 2013 Bethlehem University celebrated its 40th anniversary serving the Muslim and Christian communities in the West Bank. Cardinal George Celebrates 50th Anniversary of Ordination Francis Cardinal George celebrated the 50th anniversary of his ordination at an afternoon Mass at Holy Name Cathedral on December 18, followed by a celebratory dinner at the Drake Hotel. Ten members of the Council of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem participated in the Mass and dinner. Cardinal George reflected on his priesthood in a 50th anniversary video produced by the Archdiocese. The ordained priesthood is a gift of Christ to the Church, said Cardinal George. Summer
Sir Thomas McKiernan Named President of Holy Land Commission Governor General H.E. Count Agostino Borromeo announced that His Eminence, the Cardinal Grand Master, recently made some new appointments within the membership of the Grand Magisterium to replace three members whose mandates had expired. In the Order s hierarchy, at the top is the Cardinal Grand Master, appointed directly by the Holy Father to lead and govern the Order. The Grand Master is assisted in this by a consultative body, the Grand Magisterium. Appointed to the Grand Magisterium were: H.E. François t Kint de Roodenbeke, Lieutenant of Honor of the Lieutenancy of Belgium. H.E. Dr. Paul Bartley, Lieutenant of Honor of the Queensland Lieutenancy of Australia Ambassador Leonardo Visconti di Modrone, former Ambassador of the Italian Republic to Spain. The Grand Master also appointed H.E. Prof. Thomas McKiernan as President of the Holy Land Commission. Tom is a member of the North Central Lieutenancy and is a current member of the Grand Magisterium. The Holy Land Commission, along with the Commission on Nominations and Promotions, is one of the two standing commissions of the Order. The Holy Land Commission is responsible for examining, assessing, and recommending all proposals for the funding of projects by the Order and for monitoring and reporting on the execution of approved and funded projects. At the recent meeting of the European lieutenants at the Grand Magisterium, McKiernan paid tribute to his predecessor, Dr. Christa Von Siemens, and reported on the works planned in The Order s July 2014 newsletter reports that McKiernan recalled what was done in 2013 in Ajloun, Fuheis, Amman, Naour, and Taybeh, before talking about future works: a priestly residence in Irbed, the renovation of a school in Ashrafieh, a rehabilitation in Jenin, repairs in the Parish of Zarka, and the renovation of a school in Marfag. Dress Code Revision 4 The Page H.E. Professor Thomas McKiernan President of the Holy Land Commission Sir Peter Fletcher summarized the revision to the Order s dress code: The updated Lieutenancy code primarily represents a restatement of the Order s rules and standards where our practice has drifted away from these over time. The only changes that are likely to affect most members are a return to the wearing of gloves and neck insignia (by Knights and Ladies) with liturgical attire (i.e. when robed for mass), and a renewed emphasis on the existing rule (again, for Knights and Ladies) that dark clothing be worn under capes when wearing liturgical attire. Suitable gloves can be obtained inexpensively from numerous sources, including Amazon.com. The updated Dress Code can be downloaded from the Members Area on our website:
Project HOPE: Teacher-to-Teacher Exchange Between Ohio and Palestine Seven educators from Latin Patriarchate Schools in the Holy Land visited several Catholic schools in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati in October. Their 10-day stay was part of Project HOPE (Holy Land Outreach Promoting Education), a teacher-to-teacher exchange program funded in part by a contribution from the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre. Reverend Faysal Hijazen, superintendent of the Latin Patriarchate Schools in Israel, Palestine, and part of Jordan, led the group. Concern for the dwindling Christian population in the birthplace of our faith encourages our educators to promote global solidarity with the Holy Land educators by developing mutually beneficial, long-term relationships, states HOPE s mission statement. They do this through sharing educational initiatives and teaching strategies to promote the Catholic vision for peace and understanding. Six years ago, students and teachers from the Archdiocese visited the Holy Land. This time, those same teachers served as hosts for Patriarchate teachers staying in their homes. Project HOPE s goal is to bring hope to the Palestinian people, especially to the children, to assure them that outside the walls confining their towns and villages, there are American Christians who deeply care for their wellbeing and the education of their children, says the Holy Land Christian Ecumenical Foundation. Palestinian teachers and their hosts gathered with Project HOPE supporters for a farewell Mass and dinner at the Sisters of Charity Motherhouse in Cincinnati. (Photo: Ann Andriacco) Summer
Sir Thomas McKiernan Meets Ambassador Hackett Professor Tom McKiernan, KGCHS, President of the Commission for the Holy Land and Grand Magisterium Council member, had a private meeting with Ambassador Kenneth Hackett in April, 2014, while Tom was in Rome to attend the bi-annual meeting of the Grand Magisterium of the Order. The meeting was held at the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See located on the Aventine Hill. Tom took the opportunity to inform the ambassador about the history and work of our Order and that at least fifty percent of the Order s worldwide membership lives in the United States. Ambassador Hackett was nominated by President Obama in June, He holds many distinguished honors. In 2004, he was named a Knight of St. Gregory the Great, one of the highest papal honors available to the laity. He holds 16 honorary doctorate degrees from various U.S. universities and was the 2012 recipient of the Laetare Award from the University of Notre Dame. Sir Tom McKiernan and Ambassador Hackett in the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See Prayers for Sir William Thorn Sir William Thorn, the editor of The Page, the North Central Lieutenancy s newsletter, suffered a stroke in April. He is in the prayers of Knights and Ladies of the lieutenancy. 6 The Page Requiescat in Pace Sir Peter V. Jahnke, KCHS, Milwaukee Section Representative, age 54, suffered a massive stroke in July. A dentist and popular professor at Marquette University Dental School, he and his wife, Lady Yvonne, were known for their charitable works. Peter followed in his father s footsteps as a dentist and devout Catholic. Sir Fredrick McCahey, KHS, Geneva, IL Sir William Kane, KGCHS, a past editor of The Page, was laid to rest in Dayton, Ohio. He was 89 years old and a long term member of the Order, having been a dedicated member of the Council of the North Central Lieutenancy for over ten years. Bill and his late wife Lady Eleanor, also a member of the Order, are survived by daughter-in-law Katherine and three grandchildren, many great grandchildren and nephews and nieces. A member of the Order of Malta, a decorated member of the Boy Scouts of America for 80 years and Third Degree member of the Knights of Columbus for twenty three years, all of which Organizations sent delegations to honor him at the funeral liturgy. He had attended nearly every EOHSJ Investiture, and had received the Pilgrim s Shell, and the Silver Palm of Jerusalem. Sir John and Lady Joyce Berning, of Cincinnati, died within a few weeks of each other. Deacon Michael Vincent, Green Bay
Holy Land Pilgrims in the Year of Faith A number of Knights and Ladies Grand Cross from the North Central Lieutenancy made a return pilgrimage to the Holy Land in the Year of Faith. Grand Cross pilgrims: Sir Kenneth Palm, Lady Rosemarie Palm, Lady Mary Ann Wilinski, Lady Marilyn Ann Hardesty, Sir Walter Wilinski, and their pilgrim priest, Father John Mulvihill, KCHS Religiously, the group fulfilled their central aim of celebrating Mass together inside the Holy Sepulchre, the Tomb of the Lord. They also visited the empty tomb of the ascended Virgin Mary, across from the olive grove of Gethsemane. They recited the Rosary daily to gain the Plenary Indulgence. Sacramental Confession and Holy Communion took place at the Cathedral Church of Israel inside the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem, where the group celebrated Mass. At the Patriarchate, the Knights and Ladies were encouraged and blessed by the Latin Patriarch, Fouad Boutros Twal himself. He asked the group to greet all their fellow Knights and Ladies in his name. Baptismal vows were renewed at the Jordan River, and wedding vows were renewed at Cana, where the Wilinskis celebrated their 60th anniversary. The group walked throughout Galilee to seek a deeper appreciation of the life of Jesus. Several hours were spent at Magdala with Father Juan Maria Solanna, the Holy Land Superior of the Legionaries of Christ, who is excavating the newly discovered Synagogue from the time of Jesus. The new Church at Magdala is in the process of being completed on the shores of the Sea of Galilee to honor the Apostles and the Holy Women, such as Mary of Magdala, who supported Jesus in his ministry. We were able to pray at the House of Zacchaeus in Jericho, where Jesus dined with the tax collectors. Under the convent of the Sisters of Nazareth, we explored the newly discovered and yet unopened excavations of the House of St. Joseph, where the child Jesus grew to manhood. The Knights and Ladies also visited the birthplace of each of the four Crusader Orders in Jerusalem, viewed the Crusader battle-ground at the Horns of Hattin, and heard the story of the Shroud of Turin at the Crusader town of Acco. New Program to Reactivate Members Being invested as a Knight or Lady in the Order of the Holy Sepulchre is one of the highest honors which can be bestowed upon a member of the Catholic Church. At the time of investiture, every Knight and Lady takes an oath to provide his or her time, service, and financial support to the mission of the Order. Although knighthood is a lifelong commitment, North Central Lieutenancy records indicate that a certain percentage of members may not be honoring this commitment. The North Central Lieutenancy recently adopted a new program to encourage less active members to return to a more active status. As part of this new proactive program, Section Representatives will be reaching out to members who have not been participating in meetings and activities of the Order or maintaining their financial support of the Order s many worthwhile projects in the Holy Land. With the information provided by this, the Lieutenancy will be able to provide the Grand Magisterium with a more accurate accounting. Summer
