Envelopes may be put in the collection basket on the weekend or brought to the Parish Office. If you have any questions, please call , ext. 0. PASTOR S DESK CINCINNATI, OHIO Thursday, a week ago, the Bengals played their fourth exhibition game against the Indianapolis Colts. I was invited to have Mass for the Catholics on the team on Wednesday night at the Airport Marriott. My first football hero was Johnny Unitas, quarterback for the Colts in the fifties. I lived and died with the Colts during those days. They were the Baltimore Colts then. Some of you old timers might remember names like Lenny Moore, running back, and Raymond Berry wide receiver. So I felt honored to be asked to preside at Mass. Charlie Dezarn went with me to lector and serve. They had a Protestant service at the same time as the Mass. Eighteen Catholics showed up for the Mass. Some were players, some were coaches. I was impressed by the players size and their youth. You don t realize how big they are until you stand next to them and give them Holy Communion. I was also impressed by their devotion and the fact that they showed up for this voluntary service. They knew all the responses. They knew when to stand and sit. It was clear that Mass was part of their lives. At the Sign of Peace everyone embraced everyone. Many coming up to the altar to wish me God s peace. God has always had a way of surprising me and inspiring me throughout my life. This experience was just the latest. Who would have thought it? Surprised and inspired by God and the Indianapolis Colts! Fr. Jim BIBLE STUDY WITH FR. JIM AND FR. CHRIS The information about Bible study in the September TORCH is incorrect. We will be starting Bible Study soon, but we do not have a definite date or time. Please look for an update in future bulletins or on our website at THE YEAR OF MERCY Lost sheep. Lost coin. Lost child. Losing a possession is one thing. Losing one s way is something else. Today s examples: (1) The people of Exodus so lost their way to God, they turned to a molten calf of their own design. Worshiping something that is not God is idolatry, is deep down infidelity, is mistrust of God. Moses pleads for these stiff-necked people. And God relents; God does not punish. (2) The prodigal son thought owning things and going far off was the way to live. He comes to his senses and returns home and finds his father filled with compassion running to embrace him. The point: it is God s very nature to relent, to exude compassion, to run to us, to love. How can I be like God today? For whom will I plead today? Whom will I run to embrace? Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick The Sacrament of the Sick is a healing sacrament of the Church. Anyone who is sick or elderly and in need of physical or emotional healing can come to this sacrament which will be communally celebrated annually. Those who would like to receive the sacrament before a hospital stay or surgery are invited to call the Parish Office to make arrangements. The sacrament is also available to those who may be near death. Please call the parish emergency line. Someone will respond to your call. Please inform the Parish Office when a member of the parish is hospitalized. Considering Entering the Catholic Church? RCIA is the process through which adults are fully initiated into the Catholic faith community. The process provides for different levels of entry. To obtain more information, call Deacon Mark Bardonaro at Infant Baptisms Attendance at a Parent Pre-Baptism Session is required. Call Theresa Eagan at , ext Sacrament of Reconciliation Every Saturday, 8:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m., or by appointment. Sacrament of Matrimony One of the engaged or his/her parents must be a registered and active parishioner for six months prior to scheduling a wedding. Scheduling must take place at least six months in advance of the wedding. Weddings are not scheduled during Advent or Lenten Seasons. A marriage preparation program is required. Communion for the Sick and Homebound Please call the Parish Office to request this service.

3 TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 11, 2016 COMMUNITY DINNER Our next Community Dinner is scheduled for September 22 (fourth Thursday) in O Connor Hall from 5:00 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. Hope to see everyone there!!! ETHICS AND END-OF-LIFE CARE St. Dominic Parish is hosting a two-night adult education program focusing on Catholic teaching and end-of-life care. The program offers (a) a general overview of Church teaching related to end-of-life medical issues, and (b) tools to help participants make appropriate health care decisions for themselves or a loved one at the end of life. The program will take place on two Wednesdays, October 12 and 19, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. in O Connor Hall, and will be led by Joe Zalot, Regional Director of Ethics and Spiritual Care for Mercy Health. The October 12 session will focus on the ethics of withholding or withdrawing life-sustaining care. We will distinguish between withdrawing care and assisted suicide, and will explore the Church s teaching on ordinary and extraordinary means of care. The October 19 session will focus on Advance Directives, particularly the Living Will and Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care (DPOA). We will discuss what a Living Will and DPOA are, why they are important to have, how one completes them, and how they are consistent with Catholic teaching. HOSPITALIZED PARISHIONERS The local hospitals want to support you spiritually when you are admitted into the hospital. Below are some reminders to help make this process easier. 1. Upon admission, let them know you are Catholic. 2. Notify the Parish Office at , ext. 0 if you are in the hospital. (Hospitals no longer make the call.) 3. If you are scheduled for surgery, call the Parish Office at , ext. 0 for the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick BEFORE you go to the hospital. 4. Ask your nurse to call a hospital chaplain to offer spiritual care, help answer questions, provide communion and help contact your parish. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD The Children s Liturgy of the Word began on, September 4. Families with children ages 4-2nd grade, plan to attend the 9:30 a.m. Mass each so your children can participate in the Children s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). CLOW is one of several ministries for the young children of the parish. During the Liturgy of the Word, the children and their catechists leave the body of the church, going to the Gathering Space for a child-friendly learning experience that mirrors the Scripture readings, Creed and Prayers of the Faithful. The children then return to their families in church to celebrate the remainder of mass. No sign up or enrollment required! Simply join us at 9:30 a.m. Mass and listen for Father to call the children and their catechists to gather in the front of church and proceed to the Gathering Space. PARENTAL PREPARATION FOR THEIR INFANT S BAPTISM Baptisms take place on the first two s of each month at 1:00 p.m. Parents requesting Baptism of their first child are asked to attend a preparation session. During this time, we will look at the history and theology of the sacrament, reflect on our own baptism, and look at ways to pass the Catholic faith on to our children. Godparents are encouraged to attend as well. Our next session is scheduled for, October 16, after the 11:30 a.m. Mass in the church. Contact Theresa Eagan at , ext. 481 with questions about Baptism or to let us know that you will join us on October 16. Our future depends on you.
