3 Dear Parishioners and Friends, This week we enter the month of October, a special month dedicated to the Rosary and the Blessed Mother. There is a lot that we can pray for, especially through her intercession. Let us ask for her special assistance for our own needs and for the needs for the entire Church in these difficult times. If I watched television for four hours during the course of a day, I would be exposed to minutes worth of commercials. What a waste of time! However, if I used the same minutes to pray a rosary how valuable that time could become. Speaking of the rosary, Father Simon-Felix will be offering a three day celebration of the Rosary from Monday, October 8th through Wednesday, October 10th. The three day conference of preaching and prayer will take place at 1pm in church, each day. This is a good way to learn more about the rosary and the powerful prayer that it is. Also, looking ahead to next week, there will be quite a number of activities on Sunday, October 7th (the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary). That is the first Sunday in October. Donuts and coffee will be served in the school hall after the Sunday morning Masses. It is also the date of the annual flu vaccines. Flu shots will be given between 9 am and 11am that morning. Reservations are required. Please call Marilyn to make a reservation ( ext. 5) Since October 7th is the Sunday closest to the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (October 4th), the annual blessing of pets and animals will take place on the north parking lot at 12:30pm that afternoon. So, come back for the special blessing of animals. If you haven t had your fill, you are also welcome to attend the Our Lady of Guadalupe Benefit Dinner later that evening. The dinner will be held at Orlando Gardens (1-55 and Union Road) in south county. St. Mary Magdalen parish is sponsoring a table for the event and spaces are available. If you would like to be included, or if you would like further information, please call Marisol Pfaff at Reservations are a must. The weekend of October 13th/14th is the annual Knights of Columbus drive for children with Developmental Disabilities (formerly known as the Tootsie Roll Drive). Members of the Knights of Columbus Council 453 and Ladies Auxiliary will be collecting donations after Masses that weekend. May God protect us and watch over us through the intercession of Our Lady! God bless, Msgr. John Borcic Weekly Offertory Collection September 23, 2018 Envelopes $ 2, Loose Total $ 2, Total Collection as of fiscal year thru $ 47, Magdalen Specials Soup Kitchen $ Pro Life Tuition Assistance Total $ Thank you for your gifts to God and our parish. For more information, please call Cookie Muntges, CARDINAL RIGALI CENTER 20 ARCHBISHOP MAY DRIVE ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI P) F) Archdioceses Of St. Louis Office Of The Archbishop September, 2018 Dear Friends in Christ, On Sunday, October 7, 2018, there will be a special collection for the formation of permanent deacons in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. This collection relieves some of their financial burden for studies to become a deacon. Since 1977, 465 men have been ordained as permanent deacons in the Archdiocese. There are 197 active deacons ordained for the Archdiocese and 82 retired deacons. There are 44 men in formation at this time. When the permanent diaconate program was initiated in the Archdiocese in January 1977, men went through a two-year formation program, with a third year of post-ordination formation. Since then, the program has gradually expanded to five years of formation, plus three more years of post-ordination formation. Deacons serve in parishes, hospitals, archdiocesan agencies, and other organizations. There are six deacons who serve as Parish Life Coordinators. Half of the active deacons continue to work fulltime jobs, requiring them to balance family lives and professions with their ministry as a deacon. During formation and after ordination, deacons offer their time, personal gifts and material goods to build up the Church in the Archdiocese without compensation. Their service extends into many areas of parish life, as the assist all of us in carrying out the mission of the Church. Please support the formation of permanent deacons by promoting the special collection for the Formation of Permanent Deacons on Sunday, October 7, Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. Carlson Archbishop of St. Louis

5 Celebrating 100 Years St. Mary Magdalen Centennial September 7, 1919 September 7, 2019 A few comments from St. Mary Magdalen School Alumni in celebration of the 90th Anniversary Mary Nawricki McGinnis (Class of 1937) Whenever the fire engines went along Kingshighway with sirens blaring, we were taught not to gape out the windows, but to say a prayer for the firemen and all in danger. (Still a good practice to do!) Lois Meyer Rehms (Class of 1941) Our graduation class picture shows Fr. Mullally in his military Army uniform. He left SMM to become a chaplain when the US entered WWII. Eileen Fitschen Reese (Class of 1958) What immediately came to mind was *Sr. William Francis playing baseball with the boys at recess, and the fiery red hair she had (we could see it at her temples.) Sr. Joan Lampton, CSJ (formerly *Sr. William Francis, CSJ, SMM Teacher For me, SMM was a wonderful experience. I loved the children whom I taught and their parents were supportive. Through the years, I ve met those students who are now adults; what a joy! Francine Capizzi Voss (Class of 1970) I remember my favorite teacher was Miss Cummings (4th grade) then 2nd half of the school year she became Mrs. Hertzberg. She too had beautiful red hair and oh so pretty and kind she was! I remember wearing green plaid uniforms; chapel veils; washing lunch trays; being a group leader; and playing dodge ball in the alley no school yard fences at the time. More wonderful memories from our alumni will be shared in the upcoming bulletins.. All parishioners, former parishioner and alumni are invited to contribute any memories of their time here at St. Mary Magdalen. Please your memories to Fran Voss at smmadmin@sbcglobal.net or mail to the rectory, or you may drop off your memories in the Sunday offertory collection addressed to Fran. ST. 6 Getting more out of your Prayer life My Dear friends, I hope you have had a Spirit filled week looking at the balance in your life. If an area in your life is found to be a bit weak, then it is good to pray to the Holy Spirit. Then it is important to make a plan for that to unfold in your life. If you need to have a time of service your life, then make a plan when you can volunteer. If more prayer time is needed, just make a time in your life when you can spend an extra time praying each day. Without a plan there is little chance of succeeding in your goals. I would say you need a plan that has time everyday for prayer, study, and community. Then you need time, weekly or monthly, for service, or acts of love. This would be a good plan for balance in your life between prayer and action. After a plan is put in place, then it is time to look at something that comes before the plan, namely your motivations. By looking at our motivations, we can help the plan to succeed. The things that came before, are the things which help or hinder our success. These are our desires, our ability to have repetitions in our behavior, our ability to be intentional, and our ability to persevere in our plan. The acronym is DRIP. D esire: What is it you desire? Do you desire holiness? Do you desire to draw closer to God? Do you desire Godliness? We become what we love and who we love shapes what we become. If we love things, we become a thing. If we love nothing, we become nothing. Imitation is not a literal mimicking of Christ, rather it means becoming the image of the beloved, an image disclosed through transformation. This means we are to become vessels of God s compassionate love for others. ~ St. Clare of Assisi This is the one of the master keys of life. Pray to the Holy Spirit to increase your desire for union with God. R epetition: Repetition is another key. We are trying to build new habits, which will crowd you old habits out of your life. The Old Latin saying is REPETITIO EST MATER STUDIORUM or Repetition is the Mother of Students. In order to become good at anything, it takes practice. Repeated action becomes easier to do. This is in fact, the way sin works, and the way vice works. The more we sin, the easier it becomes to sin, and the more we practice a virtue, the easier it becomes to practice virtue. Our habits build our character. Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habit. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny. Lao Tzu I ntentional and P ersevere will be continued next week... Peace Fr. Simon Stewardship Reflection Anyone who gives you a cup of water to drink because you belong to Christ, amen, I say to you, will surely not lose his reward. Mark 9:41 Does your life reflect the life of Jesus? Remember, we were made in his image. We tend to forget this. When others see you, do they see the face of Jesus? When you look at others, do you see the face of Jesus in them?
