3 Dear Parishioners and Friends, Many of you know that, I have a strong affiliation with the Knights of Columbus. What surprises me is how much people don t know about the Knights and what they do, not just locally, Statewide, or nationally, but also globally. Last summer the international convention was held in St. Louis. Approximately 2,000 Knights and their families from throughout North and Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, Asia and Europe attended. Hundreds of bishops, priests, and deacons were also present. In his address to the convention, Supreme Knight, Carl Anderson, said, No other Catholic organization offers men what we do. We help a man to protect his family with our exclusive, top-rated insurance. We help a man to bolster his faith and strengthen his family through our Domestic Church program. And we offer him the opportunity to live out his faith through charity as part of the brotherhood of men. We have done this for 135 years, and today we continue to do this in even greater ways. For 45 years, membership in the Knights of Columbus has grown. We now stand at the all-time high of 1,941,728 members. Every national program has a corresponding program on the State level; and each program on the State level has a similar one available at each Council. Many of the charitable works of the Knights of Columbus include the placing of 829 ultra sound machines nationwide as part of the Culture of Life program, Coats for Kids, Disaster Relief, Christian Refugee Relief, Food for Families, Aid to Orphans, and special programs for Vocations and scholarships to children of members, and special service and outreach to our veterans. Monetary donations and service hours given by members helped to bring the total amount of donated dollars to $185,600,673 in addition to 75.6 million hours of donated service. K of C Council 453, which is based at St. Mary Magdalen, participates in all of these activities in one way or another. In addition the Knights here host the Lenten Fish Fries, provide the Mother s Day brunch each year, and serve the parish in many, many other ways, without ever bringing any attention to themselves. This weekend the Knights will be hosting the donut Sunday. There will be an opportunity for any interested practical Catholic man to ask questions and to find out more about the Knights and their service to the Church. Personally, I think every Catholic man should consider membership in the Knights of Columbus. I have been fortunate to have witnessed the great work these men do on the local, State, and national levels. I joined the Knights in 1976, and became a Fourth Degree member in It was a privilege for me to serve and support these men in various capacities over the years. God bless, Msgr. John Borcic Stewardship Reflection...as a matter of equality your abundance at the present time should supply their want, so that their abundance may supply your want, that there may be equality. -2 CORINTHIANS 8:14 We are responsible not only for our own lives, but for the lives of those around us. It is important that we not only grow, nurture and share our gifts; but that we also teach our children and encourage others to do the same. This is the communal aspect of our Catholic faith. We are the Body of Christ. We are called to be dependent on each other and not live in isolation. 4 Getting More Out Of Mass My dear friends, It is good to look at the opening prayer for each Sunday called the Collect. (the priest collects our prayers together and offers them to the Father). In the collect one can get a sense of where the Church is leading us for the week. Here is the prayer for 13th Sunday in Ordinary Time: O God, who through the grace of adoption chose us to be children of light, grant, we pray, that we may not be wrapped in the darkness of error but always be seen to stand in the bright light of truth. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. One can see in this prayer that we are called by God to be light in this world. Our lives and our prayers bring light into a world often filled with darkness. Part of our mission in the world is to stand up against error and lead others to the truth. We also see the word Adoption in the opening line of the prayer. We are adopted by God into His family. This often called Divine Adoption, and is the purpose of our lives. We are called by God to become one with the Trinity, in a communion with Saints and Angels, to share in the life, love, and work of God. We are partakers of Divine nature. (2 Peter 1: 3-4: As all things of his divine power which appertain to life and godliness, are given us, through the knowledge of him who hath called us by his own proper glory and virtue. [4] By whom he hath given us most great and precious promises: that by these you may be made partakers of the divine nature: flying the corruption of that concupiscence which is in the world. [5] And you, employing all care, minister in your faith, virtue; and in virtue, knowledge) From this prayer we see that we are children of God who have a mission to bring light into the world. With this prayer we ask the Father to give us this grace, through Jesus in the power of the Spirit. May we ask God this week to give us the gift of truth, and make us shine in the world as lights. May we have the grace to act on the truth we have been given, and to be disciples of Jesus. May we ask God for the grace to be brought into perfect union with Him, and become who we have been created to be. Amen. Peace, ~ Fr. Simon-Felix GROWTH IN PRAYER A mini-course based on the fourth part of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) will be offered by Father Simon-Felix Michalski, OP at St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church Rectory Session 2: July 11, pm to 2pm and 6pm to 7pm Session 3: August 22, pm to 2pm and 6pm to 7pm If you missed Session 1 you are still welcome to attend the next 2 sessions and may attend the afternoon or evening presentation For additional information or reservation, please call: , ext. 4 Soup Kitchen JULY 17 is our next Soup Kitchen meal. FLAG COLLECTION / RETIREMENT Retiring Old Glory on July 4th When the banner of our freedom is worn, tattered, and soiled from use and age and her broad stripes are no longer a fiery red & pure white, but faded and worn out and the stars and blue background are no longer vivid reminders of our blue skies and great land, of the purity, vigilance, and justice she must be retired with a new flag to properly represent this great Nation of ours. Our flag is a symbol of our people, our freedom, and our strength. I am your Flag, but I ve also been known by "Old Glory", the "Stars and Stripes", and the "Star Spangled Banner". Whatever you call me, I am the flag of the United States of America. We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude. Please join us for a Flag Retirement Ceremony immediately following Mass on July 4 th to show your gratitude for the Free County we live in.??? s feel free to call Joe Miklovic HUMANAE VITAE REVISITED July 25 th marks the 50 th anniversary of the release of the Papal Encyclical, Humanae Vitae, by Pope Paul VI. This Encyclical provides a beautiful and coherent teaching about God s plan for married love and the transmission of human life. During this anniversary year, all Catholics are urged to read the document and grasp its meaning and purpose and to rediscover the splendor of the matrimonial call to be open to human life. There are a number of resources we have been asked to make available to our parishioners which will help us celebrate 50 years of the Church s Wisdom contained in Humane Vitae. These include: Read Humane Vitae in English: w2.vatican.va/content/paul-vi/en/encyclicals/ documents/hf p-vi enc humanaevitae.html Read Humane Vitae in Spanish: w2.vatican.va/content/paul-vi/es/encyclicals/ documents/hf p-vi enc humanaevitae.html Watch Bishop Barron discuss Contraception and Social Change: v=jwywgntf9ec Other resources will be made available in the next week or two leading up to the anniversary date.
