3 Dear Parishioners and Friends, The Holy Season of Christmas is behind us. We once again welcomed Jesus into our earthly lives; we acknowledged the love and devotion of the Holy Family; and we came to see how the Light to the Nations was revealed to all people, Jew and Gentile alike. Jesus has made His dwelling with us. Today we begin to follow the public ministry of Jesus and how He brought the Good News of Salvation into our world. It may be termed an extension of Christmas. Jesus is baptized by John in the Jordan River, not because Jesus was in need of baptism nor needed to repent because He was sinless. Instead His presence made holy the waters in which many were baptized, making them ready to accept the news He was to bring. As He preached fervently about the Kingdom, and as He most willingly healed illnesses of every kind, a multitude of people came to follow Him and believe in Him. Many others turned away from Him. Even in our day Jesus is present, making His Kingdom known. Yet there are temptations to look elsewhere for a better life or for healing. We often find, however, that these things are short-lived and leave us empty and still searching. A serious reflection on the public ministry of Jesus in Scripture, along with eager participation in the Sacraments will, through the power of the Holy Spirit, give us the Grace that draws us back to the Kingdom that brings true peace and healing, and a promise of everlasting life. God was at work then, and is at work now. Maybe we are beginning more than just the ordinary time in the Church year. Rather it could be the beginning of extra-ordinary time for each of us. Let us pray for one another and for an increase in God s Grace to know, love, and serve Him in a more fervent way this year. God bless, Msgr. 5 ST PETER STUDY GROUP We will begin a study of the First and Second letters of St. Peter. The study group will meet on Thursday s from 8:45 AM to 9:30 AM. The study will give us a chance to study the letters of Peter and to pray with them too. We will meet in the day chapel. An introductory movie will be shown on Jan 30th. The movie is from the Bishop Baron series on Catholicism. The movie is optional, but will provide a background on the importance of St. Peter in the history of the Church. The dates of the St. Peter Study Group are: (Thursday s): February 7th February 14th February 28th March 21st March 28th April 4th April 11th April 25th May 2nd May 9th Here is a little bit of information about the letters of St. Peter, (my paraphrase of the Oxford Study Bible and the St. Joseph Study Bible)) The First Letter of Peter is an exhortation to the Churches in Asia Minor in order to encourage Christians who are suffering. It was written sometimes between the years AD The Second letter of Peter is a last testament which sets out to present correct teaching and cosmology concerning the return of Jesus and the final judgment. Prize for 1st place; attendance prizes; Silent RAFFLE items; a scavenger hunt; dead or alive ; heads/tails and 50/50 drawings A prize will be awarded for the table containing the most donated canned goods. Refreshments being provided include beer, soda, bottled water and popcorn but feel free to bring your favorite beverages and snacks; this is a non-smoking event, except in designated places outside To make a reservation or more information please call Joe Miklovic at (314) or miklovic@swbell.net Prayer Group St. Mary Magdalen 2019 Hello Friends, We will meet at 6:30pm to 7:15pm twice a month all year long in order to help each other have a deeper prayer life. This does not mean you have to attend every time, but come as often as you need in order to grow in your relationship with God. Please feel welcome to join us this year. The dates for the first four months are as follows January 22, February 5, 19, March 19, April 2, & April 30. Soup Kitchen In 2018 we served over 1700 meals. We fed 130 guests in December. They were delighted with their bag of candy and cookies. Thanks to everyone who makes this possible throughout the year. Our next meal is Tuesday, January 15. Sauce Makers Please put your container of sauce in the fridge this Sunday, January 13. School hall will be open from Call if you need to make other arrangements. Brownie Bakers Please bring your brownies to the rectory no later than 12 noon on January 15. Call MaryAnn or Charlie Halbrook if you need them picked up. Volunteers Needed! The Knights of Columbus Council 453 Ladies Auxiliary will again be hosting this pillowcase workshop for children with cancer. On Saturday, February 2, 2019 from 9:00am to 12 noon in the Magdalen school hall. Volunteers (men, women and teens needing service hours) are needed to cut fabric, iron, sew, write notes and package pillow cases for these children. If you can give and hour or two, please call Fran at the rectory, ext 4 and leave your name that you would like to help.
