3 Dear Parishioners and Friends, Today I want to share two thoughts with you. The first has to do with the Annual Catholic Appeal. The Appeal begins this weekend and continues over the next two weeks. Our parish goal for 2017 is $19, and our parish challenge goal for 2017 is $31, Eight out of the last nine years we have made both goals. The one year we missed the challenge goal, we did so by only $ Parishioners of St. Mary Magdalen have been most generous to the Annual Appeal. Your gift has certainly helped provide funds to a variety of services and agencies who depend upon the generosity of the Catholic population of the Archdiocese in order to continue to serve those who are in great need, those who are trying to provide a Catholic education for children, and those who are continuing their advancement toward ordination to the priesthood and permanent diaconate. The number of requests for assistance keeps growing each year. In order to meet those needs additional amounts need to be raised or the money awarded to others must be diminished. There are growing parishes in parts of our Archdiocese who can supply the additional funds. If we reach our challenge goal again this year it will be an outstanding gift from this great and proud parish in South St. Louis. Thank you for all you have done in recent years and in the past; and thank you for your continued generosity. The second point I would like to make has to do with an experience I had earlier this week. Very little outside interference, distracts me during Holy Mass. But on one morning this past week, twice during Mass, emergency vehicles went flying down Kingshighway with sirens blaring. It happens often, I know, but on this day it caught my attention. My thoughts went back to when I was a child and was taught by the good Sisters in school to pause and say a prayer anytime we heard the sirens from police cars, fire engines, or ambulances. Because we live in the City it is a common occurrence to hear the sirens of emergency vehicles as they respond to their call. Sometimes we can even become oblivious to their presence because it happens so frequently. But, when they do catch our attention, maybe we can offer a prayer for those who may be being transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, that God may give them the healing assistance they need. Maybe we can offer a prayer for the safety of those police officers, fire fighters, and EMS personnel, who may be responding to some dangerous situation, that God may protect them and keep them from harm, and allow them to safely perform their duty for the well being of others. What do you think? Just two thoughts I wanted to share with you on this Divine Mercy Sunday. God bless, Msgr. 4 Divine Mercy Sunday The essential celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday consists in the celebration of the liturgy of the Second Sunday of Easter, during which the homily should focus on the scriptural readings of the day. It should be noted that the three cycles of scriptural readings and liturgical prayers are all centered on the forgiveness of sins and God s infinite mercy, which endures forever. In addition, it is necessary that the day publicly be called by its proper name, Divine Mercy Sunday. The Decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments of May 5, 2000, which added this title to the Second Sunday of Easter, did not intend to leave this as an optional title. Moreover, this was the Holy Father s intention in granting this title to the Octave Day of Easter; it is clear from his own public announcement during the homily for St. Faustina s canonization, when he stated: It is important then that we accept the whole message that comes to us from the word of God on this Second Sunday of Easter, which from now on throughout the Church will be called Divine Mercy Sunday. In his Regina Caeli address on Divine Mercy Sunday, 2001, the Holy Father thanked God that he was able to proclaim the Second Sunday of Easter as the feast of Divine Mercy for the entire Church. At the doors of the church today there are a limited number of 8 x 12 pictures of Jesus Divine Mercy which you may take with you. In the pews are small holy cards with the chaplet of Divine Mercy printed on the back. The chaplet may be said frequently, using the rosary beads as a guide. Please take a few of the cards with you today. Keep one for yourself and share the others with family, neighbors, and friends especially those who may be away from the Church. Confession is always encouraged but everyone should even more seriously consider receiving this Sacrament of Reconciliation during the Easter Season, not only in response to God s invitation and His Divine Mercy for all sinners, but also in meeting your annual obligation. ACA Today s reading from the Acts of the Apostles affirms the call to living and supporting one another in a community of faith. Together, the apostles lived, worked and prayed together, with exultation and sincerity of heart (Acts 2:42-47) Here we are with the beginning of spring, the second Sunday of Easter and like clockwork the Annual Catholic Appeal Drive begins. The Archdiocese goal this year is million dollars. St Mary Magdalen s goal is $ In that same spirit of the apostles and Mary we are asked to help support this annual drive which helps so many in our community. For the next three weekends we will be in the back of church where you can complete filling out your pledge card. It will only take a few minutes of your time. If you cannot contribute monetarily please pray for the success of this years drive. Whether you decide to contribute or not contribute please sign the pledge card. Thank you, if you have questions contact Joe Purk or Al Jankowski by leaving a message at the rectory and we will contact you. JOHN 20:19 Are you good at making people feel welcome?. When you meet someone new, a new neighbor, a new work colleague, a new parishioner, do you make them feel at home? Many of us can probably do a much better job at this. When we make people feel welcome, we make them feel like they are included instead of being excluded. A simple hello and a smile goes a long way.
