Dear Friends On Thursday 13th May the Church celebrates the ascension of our risen Lord into heaven. The period between the resurrection and the ascension was very much a waiting time for the first disciples of Jesus. As the day for Jesus departure got nearer, I could imagine, the more worried and anxious the disciples became. Before he ascended into heaven, Jesus commissioned his disciples to proclaim the Good News of God s love to all people, baptising them in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus departure to his Father was a fearful and anxious occasion for the disciples. However, on his departure Jesus promises them help with the task ahead. This help would come in the form of the Holy Spirit. Through the Holy Spirit the disciples would be empowered, gifted and strengthened for what is to come. The sorrow and uncertainty associated with Christ s departure would turn to jubilation and joy at his continuing presence with them in the form of the Holy Spirit. At times, like the first disciples, we have periods of waiting and uncertainty. As Christians we are called to wait on God, as the Psalmists say Be still and know that I am God. At all times in our lives we are called to wait and listen to God and respond to his call. In our waiting we may be anxious or fearful, wondering what the outcome of any given situation might be. Whatever the outcome, there is nothing that can separate us from the love of God. Our new life in the risen Christ is a journey home to the Father. Where Jesus has ascended and gone before, we are bidden to follow. Like those first disciples we need to trust and know that God through his Holy Spirit is continually calling us and is forever with us at all times. Yours in Christ s service David 1

Parish Giving Corner responding to God s love enabling mission and ministry Whoever has a will, has a way to spread the Gospel Those of you who followed the BBC series Heir Hunters will know that two thirds of people die without leaving a Will. Apart from their final wishes not being carried out, it causes families and friends hassle and unnecessary expense. If you really love the people you want to receive your estate then you should make a Will. For nearly 500 years since the first edition of the Book of Common Prayer the Church of England has encouraged people to make a Will as part of their Christian stewardship. Having made a Will, it can quickly become out of date containing old addresses and no longer reflecting your assets and possessions. Family circumstances, personal needs and wishes also change over time. It is important, therefore, that your Will is reviewed periodically and kept up to date. Leaving a gift to the Church can be a final opportunity for Christians to say thank you to God for all the blessings we have enjoyed during our lives. It enables us to make a lasting contribution to the future development of mission and ministry, helping to secure the work of the Church for future generations. Over the years the PCC has been grateful to many parishioners who have left gifts in their estates and the PCC will always try to use these wisely and in line with the donor s wishes. You can specify your wishes exactly or leave your Church the flexibility to decide how best to use your gift. The Church of England offers packs, guides, advice and information for anyone wanting to make a Will. Please ask if you want help on this or any other aspect of giving. Clive Green and Roger Kenworthy - Parish Giving Officers 2

Lent Lunches HONLEY NEWS Many thanks to all who made soup or helped at the Lent Lunches and to all who supported the lunches week by week. This year, we raised 620 for Honley Aid in Sickness Fund. Gillian Greaves Pastoral Care The new Pastoral Care Group met for the first time on Tuesday 13th May and will report back to the DCC in May. We aim to keep everyone informed of our hopes and plans. You must be interested in Pastoral work to have read this report, so please will you help us? If you know of people new to Honley or anyone who is ill or in need and who may appreciate a visit please let us know. If requests come flooding in we may need your help! Prayer needs may still be put on the hanging in the Prayer Corner in church. Your prayers will be offered at the Prayer session on the first Wednesday of each month at 10.00am. Please pray at home for those in our community who have special needs. Pat Green Easter Flowers May I take this opportunity to say a huge Thank You to all those who gave donations towards the Easter flowers. Also to Sheila Rogers and the Flower Ladies who made the church look so lovely for Easter. Sandra Dean Easter Cards Thank you to all the people who helped to deliver the Easter Cards once again. We were given valuable assistance by our friends at Trinity and Elim Churches showing that the Churches can work together for our community. John Dean 6

It was good for us all to meet together again in April after a long break due to the snowy weather and Lent. Maureen Smelt s account of the Changes in Guiding over the past 100 years evoked happy memories for many of us, most of them long forgotten! Our happiest memories were of camping and singing songs around a campfire, I don t think that I was the only one who went home humming old favourites! Thanks to Andrea Green who voiced our appreciation to Maureen. My grateful thanks to all those who sponsored one of the new Service Books by contributing one pound [ 1]. If anyone else is willing to help in this way please see me at the next meeting. The new Mothers Union Enterprises catalogues are available and we can now order gifts, books and other items directly instead of through the diocese. I will continue to have a selection of cards and badges to sell at meetings. You should all have received your copy of Families Worldwide, this includes the Prayer Diary for May August. There is a different theme for each week and a short prayer for each day. Please use your diary and read about the work of M.U. in different areas each week. If you haven t received a copy please let me know. Please note that the date of the Deanery Festival at Almondbury has changed (from May) to 29th June at 7.30 pm. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday 5th May when the subject will be Mothers Union Matters. It will be an evening of news, views and fun. Please join us. Pat Green Christian Aid Week 9-16 May Honley St Mary s and Trinity Churches are involved in the usual street collection. We need extra collectors. Please see John Ambler if you can help. Thank you. John Ambler 7

Report on the DCC Meeting held on March 16 th The vicar opened the meeting of sixteen members of the DCC with a prayer. Under Matters Arising it had been confirmed by the Diocesan Legal Department that the Parish Room building is the property of the Parish and could be sold with permission from the Diocese. A subcommittee (originally set up in mid-2009 chaired by Graham Wardman) to consider the future of the Parish Room would now meet. John Dean was given permission to accept an offer to dispose of the old harmonium from church. A concert by Honley Band and the Church Choir will take place on Saturday, 22 May in church. In his Treasurer s Report, Ian Walter reported that the Annual Accounts for 2009 had been checked and passed by the Auditors. He read out a proposed letter to the Diocese explaining that we may struggle to pay the full 65,000 assessed as our Parish Share for 2010 although efforts will be made to do so. This was due to the forecast expenses arising from requirements to implement work recommended by the Quinquennial Report, the need to replace the boiler and heating system and the constantly rising costs of utilities. On the Transformational Plan the Vicar spoke on the Terms of Reference for the new groups. This gave rise to a number of questions and considerable discussion especially with regard to two matters: The relationship between the various groups and the DCC The overlap of the two of the new groups with existing groups notably the Finance & Property Committee and Outreach Committee. As a result of discussion it was agreed: (i) that the new groups will be focus groups and will report back to the DCC via the minutes of their meetings. 8

(ii) The new Finance & Property Group will be absorbed by the existing Finance and Property Committee which is a statutory sub-committee of the DCC. Under Correspondence a letter had been received from Peter Wildman resigning from his position as Electoral Roll Officer for health reasons. Any Other Business considered the question of cleaning the church and Parish Room since Kenneth Ellis had indicated his intention to retire from this job from Easter. After considerable discussion it was agreed to accept the offer from Pauline Adams that she and John would undertake the cleaning for a trial period of 3 months with help from volunteers when they are away. Church and Parish Room Cleaning Cliff Green, DCC Secretary Over the years we have enjoyed a very high standard of cleaning from Kenneth Ellis and we are very grateful for his efforts. Unfortunately, Kenneth has decided to hang up his duster and the DCC needs to review the situation. The easiest option would be to appoint someone to take over from Kenneth. However, in order to try and save some costs, John and Pauline Adams have volunteered to step into the breach and organise the cleaning for a trial period of three months. John and Pauline are looking for any support from other volunteers who are willing to help in this essential task. In particular, they are looking for cover during their holiday periods. Giving is not all about money. If you can give John and Pauline some of your time, however small, please ring them on or speak to them in Church. They will be very pleased to hear from you. The aim is to review the situation after the trial period to decide whether it is practical to continue cleaning the Church and Parish Rooms on a voluntary basis. 9 Clive Green

BROCKHOLES NEWS A D May Meeting on Thursday 13 May at 6.30 pm Coffee Morning on Saturday morning 15th May am - 12 noon in church. Donations please to Forgetme-not Trust and Church Funds. Please support the young people in this effort. Kate Drake Choir Concert We are delighted that the Huddersfield Choral Society Junior Choirs have agreed to sing for us in September as one of our fundraising events towards St George s Church 150th Anniversary in The young singers (aged 7 to 21) under the guidance and encouragement of their musical director, Susan Wilkinson, present a wide ranging programme of choral and solo items. The choir were formed 25 years ago under the leadership of Ken Rothery for the Youth Choir and Beth Sharp for the Young Singers. The concert will celebrate this. Anticipating a large audience, the choir has asked to perform in St Marys Church as St George s will not be large enough. This venue has been arranged with the DCC s permission. We approached the choir because several of St George s choristers (including Andrew and Caroline King, Neil Drake, Natasha Nichols and Clair Radley) have been members in the past and currently two of our young choristers, Hannah and Joshua, sing with the choir. Please put the date in your diary: Saturday 18th September at 7.00pm. I can assure you of a musical treat! Verena H Wood 11

Family Walk and Barbecue - Sunday 13th June Meet at St George's by pm at the latest for a spectacular two hour gentle walk suitable for all ages, followed by a tasty barbecue in the churchyard. We'll walk via Hall Ing, Farnley Tyas and Thurstonland and if the new timetable permits, we will take a short train ride to Honley to start the walk. We hope that some of our friends from St Mary s will meet us there and join in the fun. Final details in the June magazine. Refreshments will be served in church from 12 noon to see us on our way and we have moved the Family Service to this date in the hope that as many families as possible will be able to come to the service at am. There will be percussion instruments so that the children can participate in the music! OTHER ITEMS Catherine Reakes Williams Roger Kenworthy Henry and I would like thank you all so much for your prayers and support for Catherine (known to us as Kate) over the past 18 months or so. We and all the family are deeply grateful. Kate had had Parkinsons for 15 years or more, gradually going downhill over the years, and then becoming very ill on Good Friday and died peacefully on Easter Monday night, her two daughters with her. Her funeral was a service of Thanksgiving for a truly lovely Christian lady and one we shall all miss enormously and never forget. For me personally she was a very good friend who introduced me to her brother and then becoming her sister-in-law. 12 Mary Stapleton

Could you volunteer in a Prison? Prison Fellowship, through its volunteers, shines God s light in the darkest of places and aims to transform the lives of prisoners and their families. Do you have some spare time and want to support one of the most vulnerable groups in our society? There are many different ways to get involved including: praying for a local prison, supporting chaplaincy, fundraising/taking part in Angel Tree (a programme providing Christmas presents to children who have one/ both parents in prison) or helping to run Sycamore Tree (a restorative justice course in prison). If this sounds like the kind of challenge you are after then please come and join us! Together we can be God s instruments of change; to offer a message of hope instead of despair, love instead of hatred, light instead of darkness. Pat Magee, a former IRA activist, was given multiple life sentences for the Brighton Bombing then released under the Good Friday Agreement in Now Jo Berry and Pat Magee have an unusual friendship, based on the principle that there is nothing to forgive. The evening challenges the kneejerk reactions of anger and blame and shows how the deeper roots of war, terrorism and violence can be addressed through understanding, dialogue and a peaceful non-violent approach. 17 The Miracle of Life on Earth Many people today don t believe in God s creation. They believe in the Big Bang whatever that may mean. They also believe in Darwin s theory of evolution. I myself believe that this beautiful planet did not come about by chance, but that it was designed by a Superior Intelligence. God. Some cultures call him The Great White Spirit. He is the Great Creator, The God of Love, of all Wisdom and all knowledge. After all Love Itself is a creative force and only a superior intelligence could plan everything out beautifully. Then there is the question of human life being created. Today, humans and many mammals are created through sexual reproduction. But this could not be so at the beginning of time as there was no one there at all to create the first human or animal life in this manner. Doesn't that make you think? Life on this planet is nothing more than a miracle and especially our existence, in fact everything. So to anyone who does not think the Virgin Birth was possible I would say think again about it and how life was created in the beginning! We as human beings all have our own beliefs but none of us know everything. I believe if we knew everything it would be too much for us to cope with. So we can only believe. So God being the God of Love, of all knowledge and all Wisdom we should all look up to him for answers to the worlds problems. He knows the answers to all our problems, the cures for all our diseases and the ins and outs of everything in his world. Seek and you will find, ask and it shall be given, knock and the door will be opened unto you. Let us all stand back in wonder and awe at the miracle of God s creation. Mavis Seale 15
