2 Solomon Lutheran Church Congregation Council Minutes December 26, 2017 Devotions Mary Schroeder led devotions with a New Year prayer. Approval of November 28, 2017 Meeting Minutes- Mary Schroeder indicated that this will need to be done at the next council meeting as they were not sent out for review. Treasurer s Report- Mary Lou went over the reports. All funds are fairly constant. She may take a withdrawal from endowment in January. There is nothing unusual happening with the reports. After December there will be a six month block which will help better interpret things. The ELCA trust fund Meyer estate and the Endowment both had nice gains. We still hold the two cds at $50,000 each for collateral if needed. Most assets are in trusts. We have approximately $24, in delinquent tuition over the last 4 years. Bob Schroeder made a motion to accept the Treasurer s report and Terri Kruse seconded. Motion carried. Pastor s Report- None given. Director s Report December went well as did Advent. There were 30 kids at the pajama jam. Sandy Bringman turned on the lights to check on the church and scared the kids. Velocity is starting back up. She will go over the love, sex, and dating series. On January 7 th there will be family Sunday school. Going forward there will be less family Sunday school lessons. The next family Sunday school lesson will be the first Sunday in March. On February 10 th there will be a candlelight dinner. Each youth going on the youth gathering trip in Houston will have 10 tickets to sell. There are a total of 16 youth students going on the trip. There will be four adults. The deposit has been paid. The trip goes from June 25 th to July 2 nd. There will be four vans driving. There will be a meeting soon to discuss preparations. Principal s Report- Giving Tuesday received $2,400 and will receive $500 in matching funds. The specials program will be re-named art and physical education. Basketball and cheerleading is in full swing. Zach Floro has stepped down as the athletic director. Natalie will be taking over. Applied for grant from the Department of Education. Would like the doors to lock from the inside, an AED and also an intercom. Did get a denial on the grant. April is reviewing the school lunch s program to see if it should continue. When providing the school lunches there are guidelines for food safety which is difficult to maintain. Looking to see if it is worth providing still. Also reviewing civil rights policy. Marketing the school with new ads. There is an ad for 6 months in the Toledo parents guide. There will be a 3 month ad in the Toledo Business Journal. Lots of activities going on. The talent show, Mardi gras dance, Grand friends day, and chocolate sale. Communications: The all committee meeting will be on Wednesday January 3 rd at 6:30pm in the sanctuary. Mary reminded everyone about the meeting. She asked that if there is a shortage of members on your committee that you try to ask others to join the committee. Christian Day school can have one non-member on their committee. Could be Angela Miller. That will be discussed at their next committee meeting. Executive- Received Thank you s. Trick or treat for Unicef, Luther Home, Luther social services, Genacross and Good Samaritan council. The transition team has been announced. They will be Joe Sevits, Neal Schmeltz, David Hetrick, Barb Terrel, and Mary Schroeder. Will put call committee together later. Stewardship Tors did Living Generously during Lent in the past. They would like to do a follow up to that. Looking at doing the second in the series. They are tabling it until we get an interim pastor. They would like to coordinate a sermon with it. Do not want to do it during Lent this time. They reported that there are 11 giving units that are doing electronic giving and 4 for the IRA. Some people forget that the fiscal year starts in June. Christian Day School There are no motions. Joseph Paul has been covering for Mike Moreno as custodian. It is hopeful that Mike will be back on January 8 th. It was mentioned that Kenny Kruse has been very instrumental during church services keeping everything running smoothly. Membership No report. Life No report. Finance No report. Mission/Outreach No report. Old Business: 1.) The roof has not been done yet. Not sure when it will be fixed. 2.) There was a rather lengthy discussion on the leak below the gym floor. It appears that the leak only occurs during the heating season. The water meter reading was 22,000 to 66,000 gallons from October to November. Normal should be 20,000 to 25,000 per month. Using approximately 1,000 to 2,900 per day. Estimating that we are losing 26,900 gallons of water a month. From December 1 st to the 19 th we used 27,300 gallons. That is on average 10,000 gallons a week. What structural damage could be occurring? Where is all the water going? There was a meeting on it last Tuesday. The blueprints have already been looked at and were discussed at the meeting. Nothing will be done this heating season. The issue is getting reviewed by property and maintenance. It was suggested that an expert come to discuss with council. It could be in upwards of $100,000 to fix. Would like a guarantee if it is fixed. Need to update the congregation at the appropriate time. Sandy Bringman asked where the water is going from the roof. Is it pooling underneath the foundation similar to what s happening in the gym? It seems we keep inching along. Is there a temporary solution until a long term one is decided? Can we find other ways to heat the building? Portable heaters? Will it be to code? If we have to borrow a large sum of money then the congregation needs to be involved. Need an expert to explain. By next meeting it would be nice to have a path to solve the problem. New Business: - The elevator is broken. The floor has settled. Angie has been told not to fix it herself. Bob Schroeder says it is too dangerous. The other elevator has a minor issue as well. There was a motion from Bob Schroeder to fix the elevator for a maximum of $2, to repair. He has a quote to fix it for $1, John Ransom seconded. The motion passed. Adjournment with the Lord s Prayer Mary concluded the meeting with the Lord s Prayer.

6 WOMEN S NEWS ladies night out The ladies from the Woodville United Methodist Church have invited us to a soup and salad supper. It will be on Thursday, February 15 th, beginning at 6:00pm. A representative from the Sparrows Nest will be the guest speaker. A salad may be taken, but this is optional. Please contact Janet Lohmann, if you would like to attend this event. If you would like a set for yourself or a friend please ask a Stephen Minister for the set of four booklets. 7 IT S SOUPERBOWL TIME AGAIN! The Mission and Outreach Committee will be at the back and side door of church with our big pots to fill with money that we will be donating to Salem and Faith Lutheran food pantry. We will not be collecting noisy offering before church so we can support our fellow churches that are in need! ALTAR FLOWERS You may order altar flowers from Zimmerman Flowers in Woodville. They have access to the church for after hour deliveries. If you choose a different florist, please make sure you make arrangements for delivery during office hours Monday-Friday 8:00am 4:00pm.
