Larry s Desk... Recently, a parishioner approached me and made this shocking claim: this church isn t a spiritual place any longer! I was confused, so I asked her to explain what that meant. She replied that her parish used to have daily Mass, but now, it does not. (I tried to explain that, in our grouping, there is a daily Mass every weekday, but she was adamant no Mass in her building meant no daily Mass, period.) I d like to take this opportunity to discuss the rationale behind our grouping s daily Mass schedule with you. There are two dynamics that drive our daily Mass schedule: the number of priests assigned here and the number of funerals we celebrate. Prior to October, we were accustomed to having a pastor in each of our parishes. Today, your pastor (me) is shared by four parishes. In addition, we have a parochial vicar (Fr Mohler), who likewise is shared by four parishes. Fr Vince is our parish chaplain, but he only ministers in our parishes on weekends during the week, his assignment is to minister to residences in seven local parishes! Fr Daniel used to have a greater role, but that was due to Fr Ken s illness Fr Daniel helped out when he was able and Fr Ken was unable to minister. So, whereas we were accustomed to having three full-time priests ministering to our parishes, we now only have two. In addition, our parishes celebrated 250 funerals last year, and we expect to continue to be asked to celebrate that number in the foreseeable future. Each priest may celebrate up to two Masses a day. Considering that priests get a day off each week, that means that, three days a week, four Masses are possible, and the other three days, only two daily Masses are possible, for a total of 18 possible Masses. We expected an average of five funerals a week, but we know that funerals aren t evenly spread out the other week, there were 10 funerals here. So, if we wanted to celebrate Mass at each parish, each day, there would be three days that this would simply be impossible. Alternatively, if we wanted to schedule two daily Masses each day, that would mean that, on three days each week, it would be impossible to schedule any funerals. Neither of these approaches is feasible. What we decided to try was to schedule one Mass each day for the grouping. This Mass was timed such that the daily Mass could also be a funeral Mass if needed, in case there were two or more funerals scheduled on a single day. (So far, we ve had nine days in which there were two or more funerals scheduled on a single day.) We also thought that there would be many funerals scheduled on Saturdays, so we didn t schedule a daily Mass for that day. Next week, we ll talk about the practice of celebrating the daily Mass as a funeral. In the meantime, if you have any questions, please ask me! Blessings, Fr. Larry

In today s Gospel we find Jesus in the synagogue in Nazareth, his hometown. He proclaims that he is the anointed one of God and that he has come to renew the world in fulfillment of what the prophets foretold. The people are amazed by his words, but they also question him. They know him as the son of Joseph, the carpenter. To them he is a simple man from a simple family. While they are attracted by the words that he speaks they wonder how he could possibly do the amazing things that he speaks of. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to share his life and love with everyone we meet. Often times we feel called as missionaries to help those in need in other parts of our city, throughout our country and even halfway across the world! Yet, sometimes we can feel most challenged in proclaiming the Good News of the Gospel in our hometown or home parish. We wonder how we could possibly be effective witness of Jesus to the people who know our weaknesses and who have seen us at our less than best. Be confident! This is the exact witness that the world needs, that God calls us in our imperfection to set the world on fire with his love that is already burning in our hearts. As we continue our journey On Mission for The Church Alive! we are invited to be effective witnesses of the Gospel both near and far. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed.
