At a few recent Masses, I called your attention to the wording of the Prayer for On Mission for the Church Alive!, asking you who the selfless, energetic leaders who will serve our parishes in fidelity and with care are. A couple of folks later expressed frustration it seemed, to them, that the already-existing energetic lay leaders aren t being engaged in the process. It was a good response, and I d like to offer my comments here, in order that there aren t any misunderstandings at any of our parishes. As we move toward the goal of becoming one parish for our communities, it seems to me that we must begin that effort by working together in all our ministries and community services. Rather than maintaining an identity of serving one community, it seems that we should use this time to begin coming together and working as one larger Catholic presence. This approach has its challenges some ministries might be more active in one parish than another, and other ministries might not be present at all in a given parish. In order to facilitate cooperation among all our parishes, I m hoping to ask our pastoral council to be involved in the effort of intra-parish coordination. Beginning later this month, we will form one pastoral council, comprised of pastoral council members from the individual parish-based councils. Our challenge will be to set goals for our entire grouping (rather than for parishes individually). Once our pastoral council is oriented to this task, I ll ask them to reach out to particular ministries in the parishes, and begin the task of coordinating them among all our parishes. It will be a challenge to begin thinking I perform this ministry for our grouping rather than I perform it at this parish, but that s the task before us in the New Year! When we pray the On Mission prayer each Sunday, that s what we re praying that God leads us to achieve! Blessings, Fr. Larry
