2 Page 1 Holy Cross Catholic Church March 17, 2019 Second Sunday of Lent March 17, 2019 The L is my light and my salvation; whom should I fear? Psalm 27:1 STAND FIRM IN THE LORD It is not hard to imagine, in this age of wars, evil groups bent on the destruction of humanity, and political follies, that the words of Saint Paul were so accurate, even for his time. It seems that the world never changes. Paul says, Many... conduct themselves as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is their destruction... Their minds are occupied with earthly things (Philippians 3:18, 19). The result is the destruction of innocent people and of the Earth itself. But Paul says to the Philippians, our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we also await a savior, the Lord Jesus Christ (3:20). He will change our lowly body to conform with his glorified body (3:21). Note that he says body rather than bodies. He is talking about the whole community of believers, who, following the example of Jesus and of Paul, will come into the glory of God. So stand firm in the Lord (4:1). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Safeguard the Children Parish Committee Chair Ron Clouse Know who is most vulnerable to abuse All children are vulnerable to potential sexual abuse, but predators look for situations and circumstances to manipulate that may make some children more susceptible than others. Many studies show that a higher percentage of young girls are vulnerable to sexual abuse than young males. Child abuse is a societal problem, and we must be aware of signs that indicate vulnerability or potentially troubling circumstances inappropriate relationships between an adult and a young child, a child demonstrating signs of abuse by his or her behavior. Upcoming activities and programs include the following: Rosary/Novena For Life The Friends of St. Raphael KofC Ministry the Evening Rosary Novena For Life continues on Wednesday, March 20 th and every Wednesday until May 1 st at 7:30 PM. The rosary will be at the Holy Cross Chapel located on the corner of Magnolia and Everett Streets in downtown Moorpark. The event is open to ALL PARISHONERS for a meaningful evening of prayer and fellowship. We would like to invite everyone to participate in the Rosary. The Rosary is my favorite prayer. A marvelous prayer! Marvelous in its simplicity and its depth. In the prayer we repeat many times the words that the Virgin Mary heard from the Archangel, and from her kinswoman Elizabeth. The Knights of Columbus are now taking applications for their annual John and Jane Homze Scholarship. Application packets can be found in the vestibule of the church after all Masses until the weekend of April 13th and 14th. The deadline for returning completed applications is Friday, April 19, Applicants must be a High School Senior and a member of Holy Cross Parish. The scholarships are worth $1,000 each and will be awarded to one female and one male student. Catholic Charities Annual Partners in Service Awards For seventeen years, Catholic Charities of Los Angeles has recognized the generous service offered by volunteers among the parishes of Ventura County. On Sunday, February 24, Catholic Charities of Ventura County hosted the 18th Annual Partners in Service Awards Dinner. In the various ministries, services and projects, we at Holy Cross are fortunate to have a large number of parishioners who easily qualify for this honor. Two members of our parish were recognized for their service. On each one s own merit and as examples of the active practice of the Faith found here at Holy Cross, this year s honorees are Deacon and Mrs. Eduardo Castillo. Lourdes Castillo is a life member of Holy Cross. She was born in Simi Valley and raised in Moorpark. At 12 years of age, she began singing at the 12:15 p.m. Mass. At the age of 17, Lourdes took over the directorship of the Spanish Youth Choir and has been active in that ministry ever since. In her desire to expand her service to Holy Cross, she enrolled in the Advanced Catechetical Ministry Program of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles and became a Master Catechist. In her desire to learn more of our Faith and share this knowledge, Lourdes completed the Ecclesia Program for RCIA. She is Holy Cross Parish s coordinator for RCIA in Spanish. In this ministry, she prepares members of our parish to receive the Sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, Penance and Confirmation. To become a more effective leader, Lourdes is presently enrolled in the Catholic Bible Institute Program at Loyola Marymount University. Deacon Eduardo Castillo was ordained to the Order of the Diaconate for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles in He is assigned to assist the pastor of his home parish of Holy Cross. He desired to serve Holy Cross Parish when he arrived in Moorpark in 1988 by joining the Spanish Choir, where he met his future wife. In 1991, Eduardo and Lourdes were married. God has blessed them with three children: Teresa, Tony and Ana. With the encouragement of Deacon Trino Andrade and sponsorship of Msgr. Paul Albee, Eduardo entered the Diaconate Program. After ordination, his service extended beyond assisting at the altar, administering the Sacraments of Baptism and Matrimony, and Funeral Rites at the gravesite. Eduardo organized a Bereavement Ministry, gathering parishioners who speak Spanish to bring comfort to those who mourn. Deacon Eduardo trained volunteers who would visit the homebound and sick and bring Holy Communion. Sacristans and Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist were placed under his leadership. Both Deacon Eduardo and Lourdes provide the leadership for the Spanish Prayer Group which meets Monday evenings. Holy Cross Parish is blessed with many who serve and minister to her members. Deacon Eduardo and Lourdes are beautiful examples who give generously of their time, talents and resources to be a blessing to us. They are a 2019 Catholic Charities of Ventura County Partners in Service Honorees. Salmo 27 (26):1 MANTENTE FIRME EN EL SEÑOR No es difícil imaginar, en esta época de guerras, que grupos malvados tiendan a la destrucción de la humanidad y locuras políticas, que las palabras de san Pablo fueron tan precisas, aún para el tiempo en que vivió. Pareciera que el mundo nunca cambia. Pablo dice muchos se comportan como enemigos de la cruz de Cristo. Para los que piensan en cosas terrenas, su destino es la perdición... (Filipenses 3: 18, 19). El resultado es la destrucción de personas inocentes y del planeta mismo. Pero Pablo dice a los filipenses: somos ciudadanos del cielo, de donde esperamos como salvador a Jesucristo el Señor (3:20). Él transformará nuestro cuerpo frágil en un cuerpo glorioso semejante al suyo (3:21). Nota que él dice cuerpo en lugar de cuerpos. El domingo, 24 de Febrero, Caridades Católicas del Condado de Ventura organizaron la 18 a Cena Anual del Premio de Socios en Servicio. En los diversos ministerios, servicios y proyectos, nosotros en Holy Cross somos afortunados de tener un gran número de feligreses que fácilmente califican para este honor. Dos miembros de nuestra parroquia fueron reconocidos por su servicio. Por mérito propio y como ejemplos de la práctica activa de la Fe que se encuentra aquí en Holy Cross, los honorarios de este año son el Diácono Eduardo Castillo y su Señora esposa Lourdes Castillo. Lourdes Castillo es miembro vitalicio de Holy Cross. Ella nació en Simi Valley y creció en Moorpark. A los 12 años de edad, comenzó a cantar en la Misa de las 12:15 p.m. A la edad de 17 años, asumió la dirección del Coro de Jóvenes de Español y ha estado activa en ese ministerio desde entonces. En su deseo de expandir su servicio a Holy Cross, ella se ha inscrito en el Programa de Ministerio Catequético Avanzado de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles y se convirtió en Maestra Catequista. Con su deseo de aprender más de nuestra Fe y compartir este conocimiento, Lourdes completó el Programa Ecclesia para RICA. Ella es coordinadora de RICA en español de la Parroquia de Holy Cross. En este ministerio, Lourdes prepara a miembros de nuestra parroquia a recibir los Sacramentos del Bautismo, Eucaristía, Penitencia y Confirmación. Para poder ser una líder más eficaz, Lourdes actualmente está inscrita en el Programa del Instituto Bíblico Católico en la Universidad Loyola Marymount. El Diácono Eduardo Castillo llegó a Moorpark en 1988, su deseo fue servir en la Parroquia de Holy Cross y comenzó así al incorporarse al coro hispano, fue allí donde conoció a su futura esposa. Eduardo y Lourdes contrajeron matrimonio en Dios los ha bendecido con tres hijos: Teresa, Tony y Ana. Con el estímulo del Diacono Trino Andrade y el patrocinio del Monseñor Paul Albee, Eduardo ingresó al Programa del Diaconado. El Diácono Eduardo Castillo fue ordenado en la Orden de Diaconado de la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles en el año Él fue sido asignado para asistir al pastor de su parroquia de Holy Cross. Después de su ordenación, su servicio se extendió más allá de asistir en el altar, él además asiste en la suministración de los Sacramentos del Bautismo, Matrimonio, y Ritos Fúnebres. Eduardo organiza el Ministerio de Duelo, reuniendo feligreses que hablan español para brindar consuelo a los que están de luto. El Diácono Eduardo entrena voluntarios quienes visitan y llevan la Santa Comunión a los que están enfermos y confinados en sus casas. Sacristanes y Ministros Extraordinarios de la Eucaristía fueron puestos bajo su dirección. Ambos, el Diacono Eduardo y su esposa Lourdes son los líderes del grupo de oración en español que se reúne los lunes por la noche. La parroquia de Holy Cross ha sido bendecida con muchas personas que sirven y ministran a sus miembros. El Diácono Eduardo y su esposa Lourdes son un bello ejemplo y una bendición para nosotros que nos dan tan generosamente su tiempo, conocimiento, talento y recursos. Por esto, ellos son Honorarios Socios en Servicio de Caridades Católicas del Condado de Ventura del 2019.
