2 Welcome to Grace Cadral Welcome to this sacred house prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. We invite you to be part this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: What do I need to receive? What do I have to give? We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean Grace Cadral If you are new to Grace Cadral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We re glad you re here! Join us for cfee and conversation across plaza in Chapter House Library after 8:30 a.m. service or in Dining Room after 11 a.m. service. about today s readings Isaiah 44:6-8; Psalm 86:11-17; Romans 8:12-25; Matw 13:24-30, Reading texts can be found at end service leaflet. Like many children, I was ten distracted by an active and creative imagination. I had phases when I entertained all kinds curious notions: burning desire to be a pilot, certainty that I d been born in Ohio (I liked funny sounding name), considering converting to Judaism, heroically saving scores people in peril, etc. Fascination with exotic, exciting and unknown is a part life s early growing stages, and I reveled in it! For some reason, I also had fantastic imaginings about being adopted. I was not, but, much to my mor s chagrin, I d announce my certainty that this was case and that both my parents were hiding it from me. Adoption to me, as a boy, meant a special kind belonging because, rar than random natural selection biological birth, adopted children were sought out and known by ir new parents and intentionally chosen -- flaws, quirks, limitations and all. In his letter to Romans, Paul captures a wondrous sense hopeful waiting and true belonging by using metaphor being first fruits Spirit yearning for Divine adoption. The radical idea that we are desired, chosen and loved in a pround way by anor Parent (one who will never forsake us) is a powerful message. Even as we groan along in travails and labored journey life, promise ultimate and unconditional adoption as one God s own, into place gladdest desire, sustains and affirms us. Perhaps that rambunctious little daydreamer had a glimpse something truthful all those years ago? May we all find comfort in possibility an ultimate adoption! Jeff Clark was a parishioner at cadral during his time in San Francisco and began his EfM studies here in He now lives in Newport, Rhode Island with his partner and is active in historic Trinity Church. highlights The Armor Light (2015) Today 3:30 p.m. Wilsey Conference Rooms Enjoy a compelling movie, popcorn and lively discussion at second screening our Social Justice Film Festival. In this week s film, a prominent evangelical leader re-evaluates his thinking about Christian gun culture when he meets with mor a slain teenager. Wall Song Tuesday, July 25 7:30 p.m. Cadral Artists Mel Day and Michael Namkung invite you to raise your voice in a different kind choir and to build a different kind wall with a massed singing Leonard Cohen s Hallelujah. Join after Tuesday night yoga to add your voice to project.

Margaret Deeths, Assisting Clergy Peter Grace Barry Druschel Barbra Ruffin-Boston The Men Cadral Choir Canon Benjamin Bachmann, Diana Dollar Knowles Canon Director Music Christopher Keady, Assistant Director Music The Readings Isaiah 44:6-8 Thus says Lord, King Israel, and his Redeemer, Lord hosts: I am first and I am last; besides me re is no god. Who is like me? Let m proclaim it, let m declare and set it forth before me. Who has announced from old things to come? Let m tell us what is yet to be. Do not fear, or be afraid; have I not told you from old and declared it? You are my witnesses! Is re any god besides me? There is no or rock; I know not one. Romams 8:12-25 So n, brors and sisters, we are debtors, not to flesh, to live according to flesh for if you live according to flesh, you will die; but if by Spirit you put to death deeds body, you will live. For all who are led by Spirit God are children God. For you did not receive a spirit slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit adoption. When we cry, Abba! Far! it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children God, and if children, n heirs, heirs God and joint heirs with Christ if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him. I consider that sufferings this present time are not worth comparing with glory about to be revealed to us. For creation waits with eager longing for revealing children God; for creation was subjected to futility, not its own will but by will one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself will be set free from its bondage to decay and will obtain freedom glory children God. We know that whole creation has been groaning in labor pains until now; and not only creation, but we ourselves, who have first fruits Spirit, groan inwardly while we wait for adoption, redemption our bodies. For in hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what is seen? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience. Matw 13:24-30, Anor parable Jesus put before crowds: The kingdom heaven may be compared to someone who sowed good seed in his field; but while everybody was asleep, an enemy came and sowed weeds among wheat, and n went away. So when plants came up and bore grain, n weeds appeared as well. And slaves householder came and said to him, Master, did you not sow good seed in your field? Where, n, did se weeds come from? He answered, An enemy has done this. The slaves said to him, Then do you want us to go and gar m? But he replied, No; for in garing weeds you would uproot wheat along with m. Let both m grow toger until harvest; and at harvest time I will tell reapers, Collect weeds first and bind m in bundles to be burned, but gar wheat into my barn. Then he left crowds and went into house. And his disciples approached him, saying, Explain to us parable weeds field. He answered, The one who sows good seed is Son Man; field is world, and good seed are children kingdom; weeds are children evil one, and enemy who sowed m is devil; harvest is end age, and reapers are angels. Just as weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at end age. The Son Man will send his angels, and y will collect out his kingdom all causes sin and all evildoers, and y will throw m into furnace fire, where re will be weeping and gnashing teeth. Then righteous will shine like sun in kingdom ir Far. Let anyone with ears listen! To keep it beautiful requires maintenance and renovation. Here is more information on two projects that are underway. Restoring North-facing Quire windows: Our stained glass windows are one our most renowned treasures. We began a program restoring m in 2015, after a very generous and unassuming member our community left us resources specifically for maintenance cadral. The South and North Transcept windows have been beautifully restored and now it is turn north-facing windows in Quire. The interior scaffolding will be removed around August 10. When it is gone, you will see placeholder amber glass in five North Quire windows for next year while our stained glass windows are restored f-site. The exterior scaffolding will remain in place, wrapped, until August 2018; that is when restored stained glass will be re-installed. While exterior scaffolding is not eye-pleasing, keeping it in place, rar than taking it down now and re-erecting it in a year, is a huge cost-savings that represents conscientious stewardship gracious bequest for cadral maintenance. AIDS Memorial Interfaith Chapel: The AIDS Chapel is closed and will reopen in early fall. Keith Haring s triptych altarpiece, The Life Christ (1990), is now located in niche inside Ghiberti doors for viewing during closure.
