2 Welcome to Grace Cadral Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: What do I need to receive? What do I have to give? We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cadral If you are new to Grace Cadral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We re glad you re here! Join us for coffee and conversation across plaza in Chapter House Dining Room after 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. services. about today s readings Genesis 18:20-32; Psalm 138; Colossians 2:6-15, (16-19); Luke 11:1-13 Reading texts can be found at end of service leaflet. Good Episcopalians, steeped in elegant prayer book English, are better known for polite mediation than fiery rancor. Today s readings immerse us in ancient Jewish art of argument. Far be it from you to do such a thing, says Abraham, our far in faith. He doesn t hesitate to mount challenge to God. Distinct from challenge of an overblown ego, this is mark of relationship and mutual engagement. Abraham knows that he is but dust and ashes, but also that God s ways are righteousness and justice. Abraham knows that full human participation is integral to God s decisive action. Luke s rendering of Lord s Prayer has a similar insistence; in shorthand, it reads, God, act now! That immediacy reveals our own work in bringing forth kingdom: forgiveness and persistence. Who or what is knocking on door of your heart now? The time to let m in and let go of old wounds has come. Conversely, what is your deepest need? What are needs of our communities, world or earth? Our persistence in asking is essential to fulfillment of creation. Christ, our high priest, serves as exemplar of that persistence. As God s faithful people, we direct our attention to his living presence here and in faces of those around us. Some of our attention is manifest by a powerful and vocal witness to injustices of racism, inequity and poverty. Rooted and held toger in Christ, we can give and forgive, persisting for that Kingdom from which no one is disqualified. - Anna Rossi, Interim Precentor highlights Organ Recital Series Lawrence Thain Today, July 24, 4 p.m. Lawrence Thain, former assistant director of music at Grace Cadral and now associate and fellow of Royal College of Organists in UK, will play an intriguing program of both sacred and secular European music on great organ.

6 Before Gospel All After Gospel All The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to Luke. Glory to you, Lord Christ. The Gospel of Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The people sit. The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm C. Young A period of silence may follow. Dean The Nicene Creed Presider All The Prayers of People Said by all, standing. We believe in one God, Far, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, only Son of God, eternally begotten of Far, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with Far. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by power of Holy Spirit he became incarnate from Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On third day he rose again in accordance with Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at right hand of Far. He will come again in glory to judge living and dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in Holy Spirit, Lord, giver of life, who proceeds from Far and Son. With Far and Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for forgiveness of sins. We look for resurrection of dead, and life of world to come. Amen. After each petition Lord, hear our prayer. The presider adds a concluding collect. 4

Forgive, restore, and strengn us through our Savior Jesus Christ, that we may abide in your love and serve only your will. Amen. The presider pronounces God s absolution. Greening Vaughan Williams Love bade me welcome: yet my soul drew back, guilty of dust and sin. But quick-ey'd love, observing me grow slack from my first entrance in, drew nearer to me, sweetly questioning, if I lack'd anything. A guest, I answer'd, worthy to be here: love said, you shall be he. I unkind, ungrateful? Ah, my dear, I cannot look on e. Love took my hand, and smiling did reply, who made eyes but I? Truth, Lord, but I have marr'd m: let my shame go where it doth deserve. And know you not, says love, who bore blame? My dear, n I will serve. You must sit down, says love, and taste my meat. 11 The Readings Genesis 18:20 32 The Lord said, How great is outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah and how very grave ir sin! I must go down and see wher y have done altoger according to outcry that has come to me; and if not, I will know. So men turned from re, and went toward Sodom, while Abraham remained standing before Lord. Then Abraham came near and said, Will you indeed sweep me away from righteous with wicked? Suppose re are fifty righteous within city; will you n sweep away place and not forgive it for fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to slay righteous with wicked, so that righteous fare as wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not Judge of all earth do what is just? And Lord said, If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in city, I will forgive whole place for ir sake. Abraham answered, Let me take it upon myself to speak to Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Suppose five of fifty righteous are lacking? Will you destroy whole city for lack of five? And he said, I will not destroy it if I find fortyfive re. Again he spoke to him, Suppose forty are found re. He answered, For sake of forty I will not do it. Then he said, Oh do not let Lord be angry if I speak. Suppose thirty are found re. He answered, I will not do it, if I find thirty re. He said, Let me take it upon myself to speak to Lord. Suppose twenty are found re. He answered, For sake of twenty I will not destroy it. Then he said, Oh do not let Lord be angry if I speak just once more. Suppose ten are found re. He answered, For sake of ten I will not destroy it. And Lord went his way, when he had finished speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned to his place. Colossians 2:6 19 As you refore have received Christ Jesus Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him and established in faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving. See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to elemental spirits of universe, and not according to Christ. For in him whole fullness of deity dwells bodily, and you have come to fullness in him, who is head of every ruler and authority. In him also you were circumcised with a spiritual circumcision, by putting off body of flesh in circumcision of Christ; when you were buried with him in baptism, you were also raised with him through faith in power of God, who raised him from dead. And when you were dead in trespasses and uncircumcision of your flesh, God made you alive toger with him, when he forgave us all our trespasses, erasing record that stood against us with its legal demands. He set this aside, nailing it to cross. He disarmed rulers and authorities nd made a public example of m, triumphing over m in it. Therefore do not let anyone condemn you in matters of food and drink or of observing festivals, new moons, or sabbaths. These are only a shadow of what is to come, but substance belongs to Christ. Do not let anyone disqualify you, insisting on self-abasement and worship of angels, dwelling on visions, puffed up without cause by a human way of thinking, and not holding fast to head, from whom whole body, nourished and held toger by its ligaments and sinews, grows with a growth that is from God. Luke 11:1 13 Jesus was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. He said to m, When you pray, say: Far, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to time of trial. And he said to m, Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him. And he answers from within, Do not bor me; door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything. I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs. So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given you; search, and you will find; knock, and door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches finds, and for everyone who knocks, door will be opened. Is re anyone among you who, if your child asks for a fish, will give a snake instead of a fish? Or if child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? If you n, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will heavenly Far give Holy Spirit to those who ask him! 9
