This morning we revisit very familiar Gospel reading of Jesus feeding five thous. This, in fact, is only miracle story that appears in all four Gospels, giving it a reinforced authority significance. For many of us, it was one of stories that first captured our imagination in Sunday school. As youngsters, we might consider facts of story, attempt to reason determine exactly how Jesus was able to multiply food! Could this really be done, or are we to accept it as a fantastic biblical magic trick? With insight understing, this seemingly impossible event is less important as a miracle more meaningful as a sign a visible manifestation of God s abundance generosity. The feeding also contains several Eucharistic mes occurrence near Passover, people were satisfied, nothing was wasted Jesus blessed gave thanks over food. All this gives a mystical foreshadowing of what was to come at Last Supper. But how did y end up with more food than when y started? A few years ago, a friend of mine at Grace speculated that in generous act of providing food for large crowd, Jesus opened hearts of many to share food that y may have brought with m, exponentially increasing loaves fishes a ory I d not considered. There is a marvelous proverb in Sweden known as lagom. It means perfect, balanced amount or that, enough is as good as a banquet. Acts of generosity give ors permission impetus to share in ways wildly unexpected. Jesus knew what would happen when he asked Peter, Where are we to buy bread for se people to eat? What resulted was humble, surprising miraculous fulfilling of all present, with leftovers, that were not wasted very definition of lagom, very nature of Jesus. God s banquet indeed. 10 The Readings 2 Samuel 11:1-15 In spring of year, time when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab with his officers all Israel with ; y ravaged Ammonites, besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. It happened, late one afternoon, when David rose from his couch was walking about on roof of king s house, that he saw from roof a woman bathing; woman was very beautiful. David sent someone to inquire about woman. It was reported, This is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam, wife of Uriah Hittite. So David sent messengers to get her, she came to, he lay with her. (Now she was purifying herself after her period.) Then she returned to her house. The woman conceived; she sent told David, I am pregnant. So David sent word to Joab, Send me Uriah Hittite. And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to, David asked how Joab people fared, how war was going. Then David said to Uriah, Go down to your house, wash your feet. Uriah went out of king s house, re followed a present from king. But Uriah slept at entrance of king s house with all servants of his lord, did not go down to his house. When y told David, Uriah did not go down to his house, David said to Uriah, You have just come from a journey. Why did you not go down to your house? Uriah said to David, The ark Israel Judah remain in booths; my lord Joab servants of my lord are camping in open field; shall I n go to my house, to eat to drink, to lie with my wife? As you live, as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing. Then David said to Uriah, Remain here today also, tomorrow I will send you back. So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day. n next day, David invited to eat drink in his presence made drunk; in evening he went out to lie on his couch with servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house. In morning David wrote a letter to Joab, sent it by h of Uriah. In letter he wrote, Set Uriah in forefront of hardest fighting, n draw back from, so that he may be struck down die. Ephesians 3:14-21 bow my knees before Far, from whom every I family in heaven on earth takes its name. I pray that, according to riches of his glory, he may grant that you may be strengned in your inner being with power through his Spirit, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith, as you are being rooted grounded in love. I pray that you may have power to comprehend, with all saints, what is breadth length height depth, to know love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, so that you may be filled with all fullness of God. Now to who by power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to be glory in church in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever ever. Amen. John 6:1-21 Jesus went to or side of Sea of Galilee, also called Sea of Tiberias. A large crowd kept following, because y saw signs that he was doing for sick. Jesus went up mountain sat down re with his disciples. Now Passover, a festival of Jewish people, was near. When he looked up saw a large crowd coming toward, Jesus said to Philip, Where are we to buy bread for se people to eat? He said this to test, for he self knew what he was going to do. Philip answered, Six months wages would not buy enough bread for each of m to get a little. ne of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter s bror, said to, There is a boy here who has five barley loaves two fish. But what are y among so many people? Jesus said, Make people sit down. Now re was a great deal of grass in place; so y sat down, about five thous in all. Then Jesus took loaves, when he had given thanks, he distributed m to those who were seated; so also fish, as much as y wanted. When y were satisfied, he told his disciples, Gar up fragments left over, so that nothing may be lost. So y gared m up, from fragments of five barley loaves, left by those who had eaten, y filled twelve baskets. When people saw sign that he had done, y began to say, This is indeed prophet who is to come into world. When Jesus realized that y were about to come take by force to make king, he withdrew again to mountain by self. When evening came, his disciples went down to sea, got into a boat, started across sea to Capernaum. It was now dark, Jesus had not yet come to m. The sea became rough because a strong wind was blowing. When y had rowed about three or four miles, y saw Jesus walking on sea coming near boat, y were terrified. But he said to m, It is I; do not be afraid. Then y wanted to take into boat, immediately boat reached l toward which y were going.
