Mary Carter Greene and a group of 30 members of Diocese marched in Washington, D.C. Photo credit: Kelly Costello The Fourth Sunday after Epiphany 29 January, a.m. Choral Eucharist

2 Welcome to Grace Cadral Welcome to this sacred house of prayer for all people. Those who built this place and care for it love tradition and feel passionate about engaging with what is new. If you look closely you will find images of scientists, reformers, Jewish rabbis and Roman Catholic popes, political leaders, saints, and even an astronaut. We invite you to be part of this joyful community even if your visit is short. You might ask yourself two questions: What do I need to receive? What do I have to give? We would be delighted to hear about your explorations. May God bless you on your journey! The Very Rev. Dr. Malcolm Clemens Young, Dean of Grace Cadral If you are new to Grace Cadral, please introduce yourself and fill out a welcome card so we can be in touch with you. We re glad you re here! Join us for coffee and conversation across plaza in Chapter House Library after 8:30 a.m. service or in Dining Room after 11 a.m. service. about today s readings Micah 6:1-8; 1 Corinthians 1:18-31; Matw 5:1-12 Reading texts can be found at end of service leaflet. The image that permeates everything we think or say about season of Epiphany is that of three kingly sages prostrating mselves before lowly infant who has nowhere to lay his head but feeding trough of oxen and donkeys, a homeless child about to become a refugee. They recognized power and glory y saw re as something infinitely greater than might of murderous and paranoid tyrant who ruled Judea. Is it any wonder that this child grew up to proclaim kingdom of poor in spirit, meek, merciful and persecuted? As Paul says, God chose what is foolish in world to shame wise; God chose what is weak in world to shame strong. The way of life and truth that Jesus has given us to follow is one of humility and simplicity, goodness and service, that same path marked out a half millennium before his birth in prophet Micah s words, to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God. This reflection was written by Peter Grace. Peter has been a member of cadral congregation since 2010 and is a graduate of Education for Ministry program. He is currently a co-facilitator of Thursday Bible study and Sunday 4:30 book study groups. highlights The King & Faith Lectures Today 4 p.m. Gresham Hall Join us for third and final panel conversation on Justice in Beloved Community, in partnership with Norrn California Dr. Martin Lur King Jr. Foundation. In this series, we examine Dr. King s question as asked through his final manuscript, Where Do We Go from Here: Chaos or Community? through lens of current events. The seminar will include breakout sessions with community leaders. The Forum: Luvvie Ajayi Tuesday, January 31 7:45 p.m. Gresham Hall The winter Forum returns and welcomes Luvvie Ajayi, award-winning writer and executive director of The Red Pump Project in conversation on everything from feminism to friendship to social media to sex tapes to her first book, I m Judging You: The Do-Better Manual, which takes a hard look at our behavior in today s crazy-connected digital world.

6 The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, Far, Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. The Prayers of The people stand. After each petition Lord, hear our prayer. The presider adds a concluding collect. The Confession of Sin may kneel. Deacon Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor. Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to glory of your Name. Amen. The presider pronounces God s absolution. The Gift of a Name Welcome We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, only Son of God, eternally begotten of Far, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with Far. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by power of Holy Spirit he became incarnate from Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. The peace of Christ be always with you. And also with you. On third day he rose again in accordance with Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at right hand of Far. He will come again in glory to judge living and dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in Holy Spirit, Lord, giver of life, who proceeds from Far and Son. With Far and Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for forgiveness of sins. We look for resurrection of dead, and life of world to come. Amen. Today, as we offer each or a sign of peace, share gift of your name and a word or two about something that gives you joy. 4

10 The Readings Micah 6:1 8 Hear what Lord says: Rise, plead your case before mountains, and let hills hear your voice. Hear, you mountains, controversy of Lord, and you enduring foundations of earth; for Lord has a controversy with his people, and he will contend with Israel. O my people, what have I done to you? In what have I wearied you? Answer me! For I brought you up from land of Egypt, and redeemed you from house of slavery; and I sent before you Moses, Aaron, and Miriam. O my people, remember now what King Balak of Moab devised, what Balaam son of Beor answered him, and what happened from Shittim to Gilgal, that you may know saving acts of Lord. With what shall I come before Lord, and bow myself before God on high? Shall I come before him with burnt offerings, with calves a year old? Will Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, with ten thousands of rivers of oil? Shall I give my firstborn for my transgression, fruit of my body for sin of my soul? He has told you, O mortal, what is good; and what does Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? 1 Corinthians 1:18 31 The message about cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is power of God. For it is written, I will destroy wisdom of wise, and discernment of discerning I will thwart. Where is one who is wise? Where is scribe? Where is debater of this age? Has not God made foolish wisdom of world? For since, in wisdom of God, world did not know God through wisdom, God decided, through foolishness of our proclamation, to save those who believe. For Jews demand signs and Greeks desire wisdom, but we proclaim Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ power of God and wisdom of God. For God s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God s weakness is stronger than human strength. Consider your own call, brors and sisters: not many of you were wise by human standards, not many were powerful, not many were of noble birth. But God chose what is foolish in world to shame wise; God chose what is weak in world to shame strong; God chose what is low and despised in world, things that are not, to reduce to nothing things that are, so that no one might boast in presence of God. He is source of your life in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification and redemption, in order that, as it is written, Let one who boasts, boast in Lord. Matw 5:1 12 When Jesus saw crowds, he went up mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught m, saying: Blessed are poor in spirit, for irs is kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for y will be comforted. Blessed are meek, for y will inherit earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for y will be filled. Blessed are merciful, for y will receive mercy. Blessed are pure in heart, for y will see God. Blessed are peacemakers, for y will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for irs is kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in same way y persecuted prophets who were before you. Serving assembly: The Very Rev.
