2 6th Sunday of Easter May 1, 2016 From the Desk of Deacon Chris. LOVE IS PATIENT, LOVE IS KIND Father Ingemie referred to these words from chapter 13 of St. Paul s First Letter to the Corinthians as Father talked about Jesus New Commandment from the Gospel of John; the commandment to love one another as Jesus has loved us. Practically anyone who has attended a marriage has heard St. Paul s beautiful description about the qualities and virtues of love, and I particularly want to focus on the truth that love is patient, love is kind. At our recent Evangelization meeting, we briefly discussed the weekend we asked everyone to Bring a Friend to Mass. The discussion began with the question of whether the weekend was successful or not. I d like to share my thoughts on that question, and they center on love being patient and kind. We are not always very patient in our society. We want what we want, and we want it now! At our Bring a Friend of Mass weekend I would have been thrilled to see 100 new faces at the Masses, or to see our churches filled to the brim. We all would like that, but I think we have to be happy that we did see some new faces that weekend. It means some people accepted the invitation to join their friend at Mass! What a wonderful success that is! We need to rejoice in what we have, rather than despair in what we do not have. And we need to have the trust and patience in God that the seeds we have planted will eventually, by the grace of God, bear fruit. Most likely, the friends we invited to Mass are people we love. Maybe they are a child, or a sibling, or a dear friend, who have stopped going to Mass for one reason or another. Maybe they joined you at Mass, and maybe they did not. What matters is that we love them, and we invited them. We have to stay patient with them, and let the Holy Spirit lead them back to Jesus. We know God has a plan for each of us, and we know God s ways are not our ways. While we want things to happen immediately, God s love is eternally patient. God loves our friends just like he loves us, and we hope and pray that our friends will eventually join us again at Mass, and our churches will once again be full. So what do we do in the meantime? We stay kind, we stay loving, and we stay patient. We continue to lovingly invite our friends to join us for Mass, and we keep praying for them while the Holy Spirit works in them. We all have different journeys in life, but we all hope that our journey will ultimately lead us into the loving embrace of our Lord Jesus! God bless. Good news: If you ve been afraid that exercise will aggravate your asthma symptoms, it s time to breathe a little easier. New research suggests that regular aerobic exercise may, in fact, improve symptoms. In this study, patients with asthma were divided into two groups. One group practiced yoga breathing exercises for 30 minutes twice a week, while the other engaged in a 35-minute treadmill session twice a week, along with the breathing exercises. The results were striking: those whose regimens included aerobic exercise became more resistant to their usual asthma triggers and had lower inflammation markers in comparison with the group that practiced only the breathing exercises. What s more, most of the people in the exercise group reported improvements in their quality of life. Longer, larger studies are needed to confirm the results, but it s not too soon to talk to your doc about exercise as part of your asthma treatment plan. 4 CONFIRMATION The youth of our parish will be confirmed by Bishop Scharfenberger on May 12 at 5:30 PM at the Speigletown site. A reception will follow in the hall. The parish is invited to come and join us in these celebrations. Please keep our children and their parents in your prayers during this special time. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD Children s liturgy of the word is the dismissal during Mass for the children to hear the word of God proclaimed with age appropriate activities to enhance their understanding of the Bible readings. We are hoping to have enough volunteers so that each volunteer would be responsible for just one weekend a month. Volunteers will be trained, and receive guide books to help them prepare their sessions. Please prayerfully consider if you are being called to this most important ministry in our parish. Sharing the Word of God with our children, and teaching them to love Jesus is one of the most rewarding ministries we have. Please contact Beth Thayer at the Parish Office to volunteer. THE HOLY ROSARY Did you know that the Church dedicates the month of May to our Holy Mother, Mary? The blessed virgin is honored throughout the month as the mother of our Lord Jesus who, from the cross, gave his mother to us to be the mother of all, and the mother of His Church. A great way to honor Mary is to pray the Holy Rosary. The rosary can be prayed alone, or in a group, as we remember the Sacred Mysteries from the lives of Jesus and Mary. Do you own a set of rosary beads? If you do not, we have free rosary beads available at the entrances of the churches. We also have instructions on how to recite the Holy Rosary. Please give honor to our Blessed Mother during the month of May by praying the rosary with her, and our Lord Jesus. The BOOK NOOK NEWS Are you ready to celebrate The Book Nook's 8th Anniversary? We have been busy during the winter getting ready for another Blow Out-$5 a bag sale! Hard covers, paperbacks, CD's, children and young adult books, cookbooks, religious, self-help, history and many miscellaneous topics are included in the sale. Beginning on Saturday, May 7 and every Saturday morning in May, the Nook and the Annex (triple classroom) will be open from 9:00 am until noon, and will also be open before and after Masses every weekend in May. Please take this opportunity to stop by the Book Nook and see what we've been doing. In recent weeks, we have been fortunate enough to have some wonderful new books donated. The Book Nook has books by the best-named authors, so it's a great place to find a title by your favorite, or to try a new one.
