2 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time August 17, 2014 SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT The encounter of the Canaanite woman with Jesus in today's Gospel points out the necessity of perseverance in our prayers. While prayer includes adoration and thanksgiving, a large part of prayer is our petitions-- our wants and needs. It is great when we pray and get what we ask for, but what about those times when we pray and do not get what we ask for, especially when we pray with persistence? I think when that happens it reminds us what prayer really is. Prayer is an act of faith. We should trust that God has a reason for answering our prayers in the way that He does. Today let us pray for the faith that we need to accept the answers to our prayers, whether we agree with them or not. Deacon Charlie Prayer is putting Oneself in the Hands of God. Our Goal is to promote health & wellness within the values, beliefs, practices of our faith community. Nurses Note: Alzheimer Caregiver Support Group meets this Wednesday, 7:00pm at Transfiguration North in the gathering area. If you have a loved one over the age of fifty with dementia or Alzheimer s, this group may help you find ways to care for yourself while caring for a loved one. Please consider attending a meeting or pass on the information to someone who also may be caring for a loved one. For more information feel free to contact Cindy , Mary or Pat Hebert Health Tips: Got thin skin? Toughen up your hide with walnuts or a DHA omega-3 supplement. You may stay strong on the inside as you age, but many older adults complain of having thinner skin that bruises and tears easily. There are many possible causes, including insufficient dietary protein, poor blood flow, insufficient nutritious fats, and certain medications. Patients report that eating an ounce of walnuts (about 24 walnut halves good protein and good fat) a day or taking a DHA omega-3 supplement (900 mg a day) helps, as does an application of petroleum jelly on the forearms. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal will take place next week. One way that this Appeal works to support mission dioceses here at home is by supporting seminarian formation in poor dioceses. The blessing of seminarians places a financial burden on these dioceses, which educate each seminarian at a cost of $35,000-$40,000 per year. Your support is needed for these young men, so that they can return to serve their parishes. Please strengthen the Church at home by making a generous gift to next week s Appeal. Book Nook News Thanks to all who support our Book Nook. It has become a great community service and hopefully will continue as such. The Book Nook is closed during August in preparation of the annual parish garage sale being held on August We will be open during the garage sale and are in need of your used books. Please make your donations at either entrance of the church during regular church office hours. Please remember, no text books, encyclopedias, magazines or VHS tapes. 4 Transfiguration Parish TICKETS FOR SHOWS AT PROCTOR S THEATER IN SCHENECTADY There is a wonderful schedule of events this year at Proctor s in Schenectady. I have picked some great opportunities to see great shows at reasonable prices. Please join us on December 28th at 1:30 pm for Elf (The Broadway Musical). We are able to get wonderful seats at $58.00 each. Another great show that I have reserved tickets for is Jersey Boys. The show tickets are for the 2:00 pm show on January 18, The cost is $73.00 each. Only 5 tickets left!! Later in the Spring of 2015 I have tickets for Annie on March 8, 2015 at 2:00 pm. HELP AT RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE South Lake Avenue in Albany, New York Transfiguration Parish would like to volunteer to cook a meal at Ronald McDonald House one time per month during the upcoming year. We are looking for families or a group of friends to volunteer to help reach out to this organization that helps people in crisis. Our church would pay for the food. You would be responsible for planning the menu, purchasing the food and preparing it at the house. There is a limit of 8-10 people per group of volunteers. If you are interested, please call the church office. MINISTRY OPPORTUNITIES Ministry of Altar Servers (Acolytes) Altar servers serve at Mass and other liturgical services, such as funerals and weddings. Altar servers can be male or female and must have celebrated their first Holy Communion. We also encourage adults and young adults to participate in this ministry. More information will follow in the coming weeks. The secret to joy is self giving love.
