2 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time January 15, 2017 From the Desk of Deacon Chris. ORDINARY TIME IS FAR FROM ORDINARY We all know the Church Liturgical Year is not the same as the Calendar Year. The Church Year begins with the First Sunday of Advent, while our Calendar Year always begins on January 1 st. We all know our Church year is split into five seasons which are Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, and Ordinary Time. Now, we all pay special attention to the Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter seasons, and we certainly should. But do we pay special attention as well to Ordinary Time, which covers more than half of our Church Year? Believe me, Ordinary Time is far from ordinary! The term ordinary in English most often means something that is not special or distinctive, which may be why some people think that Ordinary Time refers to parts of the Church Year that are unimportant, or less important. We all know people who attend Mass only twice a year at Christmas and Easter. Perhaps we also know people who try a little harder during Advent and Lent because they are under the impression those are the most important times of the year. Still, Jesus is with us at all times through every season, and since we spend most of the year in Ordinary Time, it just makes perfect sense that Ordinary Time is just as important as any other time of the Liturgical Year. Yes, the other times of the year are very special, and call us to holiness, but Ordinary Time is also extremely special, and very important to our spiritual lives. Ordinary Time has nothing to do with time that is unimportant. The term comes from the Latin word Ordo from which we get the English word order. The weeks of Ordinary Time are numbered which relates to the Latin word, Ordinalis, which refers to numbers in a series. In any given year there are either 33 or 34 Sundays in Ordinary Time depending on when Easter is that year. Here is something else you may or may not know. Ordinary Time is a feature of the post Vatican II liturgical calendar. In the celebration of the Traditional Latin Mass, as well as in the calendars of the Eastern Catholic Mass Schedule & Intentions Saturday January 14 4:00 p.m. Spe Martin J. The site of the Saturday, 4:00 pm Mass will alternate each month. In January it will be in Speigletown for the entire month and in February the Mass will be in Schaghticoke, etc. From the Desk of Deacon Chris - continued Churches, the Sundays of Ordinary Time are referred to as the Sundays After Epiphany, and the Sundays after Pentecost. Regardless of how we number them or what we call them, the Sundays of Ordinary Time are far from ordinary for us. Ordinary time is the part of the year when we reflect and give thanks that Christ, the Lamb of God, lives among us and transforms our lives. My friends, there is nothing ordinary about that! God bless. Deacon Chris

In the words of St. Teresa of Calcutta: Wherever they are, the Missionaries of Charity start the day s work with the same prayer from their community prayer book: Dear Lord, the Great Healer, I kneel before you, since every perfect gift must come from you. I pray, give skill to my hands, clear vision to my mind, kindness and meekness to my heart. Give me singleness of purpose, strength to lift up a part of the burden of my suffering fellowmen, and a realization of the privilege that is mine. Take from my heart all guile and worldliness, that with the simple faith of a child, I may Rely on you. Amen. A good prayer to start our days. God bless This Week s Parish Announcements Deacon Chris TRANSFIGURATION PARISH NURSE PROGRAM Pat Hebert, RN, MA, Faith Community Nurse (518) , ext. 13 p.hebert@transfigurationparish.net Our mission is to model the healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Our Goal is to promote health & wellness within the values, beliefs, practices of our faith community. Nurses Note: Blood Pressure Screening THIS weekend. Stop in and have your blood pressure checked and your blood sugar read by a Registered Nurse. Health Tips: Is losing weight one of your New Year s resolutions? Learn why reducing your stress is the first step to success! Warning: This tip contains a physiology lesson! Chronic stress triggers an ancient response that results in the release of cortisol into your bloodstream. Cortisol raises your blood sugar, which increases fat storage in your belly. So stress ends up increasing the size of your belly. Chronic stress contributes to fat accumulation through increases in the production of cortisol and, by association, insulin. Not only does insulin help you store fat, but it increases your appetite. So you eat more and feel less satisfied, a vicious cycle. An increased appetite ups the chance that you ll engage in hedonistic eating in the form of nutritionally bankrupt sweets. This results in further fat storage, additional inflammation, higher insulin demand and more hunger. Do you see where this is going? The more stressed you are, the more you eat. Start off the New Year right by following through on a personal promise to manage your stress. It will help you toward your goal of reaching a healthy weight. Need help? Try our online program, Stress Free Now, and start feeling more relaxed and in control of your stress. RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) Have you or anyone you know ever thought about becoming Catholic? Or are you a Catholic who has not received all of the sacraments? Many people assume that RCIA is only for people who have never been Catholic and are looking to convert. The fact is that RCIA can be for anyone, Catholics, who have not received all of their sacraments or non-catholics who are interested in learning more about the Catholic faith. This process is an individual spiritual journey for anyone seeking an active relationship with the Catholic Church. The Community of Transfiguration Parish warmly welcomes all and will be companions on the journey for all who come. Groups will be gathering soon. If you are interested in learning more about the RCIA process, contact Pat Hebert at (518) , ext 5 or , ext 13. WELCOME No matter what your present status in the Catholic Church; no matter what your current family and marital situation; no matter what your personal history, age, race, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, physical condition; no matter what your own self-image; you are invited, welcomed, accepted, loved, and respected here at Transfiguration Parish.

The verses serve as a wonderful silent prayer as well: The love I have for you, my Lord Is only a shadow of your love for me, Your deep abiding love. My own belief in you, my Lord, Is only a shadow of your faith in me, Your deep and trusting faith. My life is in your hands. My love for you will grow, my Lord. Your light in me will shine. The dream I have today, my Lord, Is only a shadow of your dream for me, If I but follow you.
