4 Christ is risen from the dead, trampling death by death, and to those in the tombs giving life! Tropar, tone 3: Let the heavens be glad, let the earth rejoice,* for the Lord has done a mighty deed with His arm.* He trampled death by death; He became the first born of the dead;* He saved us from the abyss of Hades* and granted great mercy to the world. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: Kondak, tone 3: With your divine protection, O Lord,* as You once raised the Paralytic, now life up my soul* paralyzed with all kinds of sin and evil deeds of wickedness,* so that, as saved, I may cry out to You:* Glory to your might, O merciful Christ. Now and for ever and ever. Amen!: Kondak, tone 8: Though You went down to the grave, immortal Lord,* You destroyed the power of Hades* and rose victorious, Christ our God.* You who said "Rejoice" to the myrrh-bearing women,* give peace to Your apostles* and offer resurrection to the fallen. Prokimen, tone 1: Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us, as we have hoped in You. Verse: Exult, you just, in the Lord; praise from the upright is fitting. Epistle: A reading from the Acts of the Apostles (9: 32-42) In those days Peter was making numerous journeys, he went - among other places - to God s holy people living in Lydda. There he found a man named Aeneas, a paralytic who had been bedridden for eight years. Peter said to him, Aeneas, Jesus Christ cures you! Get up and make your bed. The man got up at once. All the inhabitants of Lydda and Sharon, upon seeing him, were converted to the Lord. Now in Joppa there was a certain woman convert named Tabitha (in Greek Dorcas, meaning a gazelle). Her life was marked by constant good deeds and acts of charity. At about that time she fell ill and died. They washed her body and laid it out in an upstairs room. Since Lydda was near Joppa, the disciples who had heard that Peter was there sent two men to him with the urgent request, Please come over to us without delay. Peter set out with them as they asked. Upon his arrival they took him upstairs to the room. All the widows came to him in tears and showed him the various garments Dorcas had made when she was still with them. Peter first made everyone go outside; then he knelt down and prayed. Turning to the dead body, he said, Tabitha, stand up. She opened her eyes, then looked at Peter and sat up. He gave her his hand and helped her to her feet. The next thing he did was to call in those who were believers and the widows to show them that she was alive. This became known all over Joppa, and because of it, many came to believe in the Lord. Alleluia Verses: The favors of the Lord I will sing forever, through all generations. For you have said: my kindness is established forever. Gospel: John 5: 1-15: At that time Jesus went up to Jerusalem. Now in Jerusalem by the Sheep Pool there is a place with the Hebrew name Bethesda. It s five porticoes were crowded with sick people lying there blind, lame or disabled, waiting for the movement of the water. For from time to time an angel of the Lord used to come down into the pool; and the water was stirred up, so the first one to get in was healed of whatever sickness he had had. There was one man who had been sick for thirty eight years. Jesus, who knew he had been sick a long time, said when he saw him lying there, Do you want to be healed? Sir, the sick man answered, I do not have anyone to plunge me into the pool once the water has been stirred up. By the time I get there, someone else has gone in ahead of me. Jesus said to him, Stand up! Pick up your mat and walk! The man was immediately cured; he picked up his mat and began to walk. The day was a Sabbath. Consequently, some of the Jews began telling the man who had been cured, It is the sabbath, 3

5 and you are not allowed to carry the mat around. He explained, It was the man who cured me who told me, Pick up your mat and walk. This person who told you to pick it up and walk, they asked, who is he? The man who had been restored to health had no idea who it was. The crowd in that place was so great that Jesus had been able to slip away. Later on, Jesus found him in the temple precincts and said to him: Remember, now, you have been cured. Give up your sins so that something worse may not overtake you. The man went off and informed the Jews that Jesus was the one who had cured him. ENGLISH: Instead of Indeed, it is fitting : The angel cried out to the One full of grace: O chaste Virgin, rejoice! And again I say, rejoice! Your Son has risen from the tomb on the third day and raised the dead. Let all people rejoice! Shine, shine, O New Jerusalem, for the glory of the Lord has risen upon you! Exalt now and be glad, O Sion! And you, O chaste Mother of God, take delight in the resurrection of your Son. Communion Hymn: Receive the Body of Christ; partake of the source of immortality. Praise the Lord from the heavens, praise Him in the highest. Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! APOSTLE JAMES - THURSDAY, APRIL 30; POST FEAST OF MID-FEAST WEDNESDAY Tropar, tone 3: Holy Apostle James, intercede with the merciful God to grant forgiveness of sins to our souls. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: Kondak, tone 2: O glorious James, when you heard the divine Word calling you, you put aside your love for your father and hurried to Christ with your brother, John. Therefore, both of you were made worthy to see the divine Transfiguration of the Lord Now and forever and ever. Amen. Kondak of Mid-feast, tone 4: In the midfeast of the Law, Creator and Master of all, you said to those present: Come, and draw the water of immortality. And so, we fall down before you and cry out in confidence: Grant us your mercy, for you are the source of our life. Prokimen, tone 7: The just man is glad in the Lord and takes refuge in him. Verse: Hear, O God, my voice in my lament. Alleluia verses: The just man shall flourish like the palm tree, like the cedar of Lebanon shall he grow. They that are planted in the house of the Lord shall flourish in the courts of our God. Instead of It is truly right... : Virginity is alien to motherhood and childbearing foreign to virginhood. Both were brought together in you, God bearer. And so all the nations of earth exalt you. Communion Hymn: The just man shall be in everlasting remembrance; of evil hearsay he shall have no fear. Eparchy of Saskatoon Family and Life Office Bulletin: SOBOR in Action Edition The future of the world passes through the family Familiaris Consortio, 79 In speaking to people across the Eparchy one request I often get is to specifically address issues relating to seniors. In January 2015 Pope Francis offered, on two successive Wednesday audiences, a beautiful catechesis on our elders. The complete text of this catechesis can be found on my website at page_id= things we can learn about Catholic teaching on our 5

7 Elders: 1. The quality of a civilization can be judged by the way we treat our elders do we make a place for them and respect their wisdom? (Quote from Pope Benedict XVI) 2. It can be mortal sin to ignore and neglect our elderly either materially or in neglecting our relationships in the catechesis specific examples are given. 3. Our treatment of our elders will come back at us, as it will be the example we will set for our children. 4. Gratitude and hospitality are required of us to make our elders a living part of our community whether they are family members or even strangers. 5. If we care for and welcome our elders we will strengthen the social fabric and provide a future for the youth. 6. God does not discard people and in every stage of life gives us a vital role and vocation this is true for our elders who have an important role in the family and our Church. 7. We have a great number of elderly saints as role models we can begin by looking at the lives of Simeon and Anna who received Christ upon his Presentation in the Temple. 8. Elders need to appropriate to themselves the Word of God, and the teaching of the Church in all its richness and power in order to speak with wisdom and truth. 9. When the rest of society is too busy, too distracted by the material, it will be up to our elders to sing and speak of God s plan and wonders and to pray for the needs of the young and for those who fail to remember God. The purifying power of faith and prayer also helps us to find the wisest way to teach the young that the true meaning of life is found in self-sacrificing love and concern for others. 10. The wise and Spirit filled words and prayers of grandparents are a treasure trove for the youth and it is up to families and the Church to foster that intergenerational dialogue between the elders and the youth so that all can benefit. J DPL Sr. Theodosia Papirnik+: A Life Lived for the Glory of God and in the Service of Families in the Eparchy of Saskatoon Like many in our Eparchy, Sr. Theodosia and the Sisters of St. Joseph were there for my family when my parents were sick and dying. I cannot say enough the kindness of Sr. T (as she was known to some) in finding a place for them in their need and about the love and care the Sisters showed to my parents in their final days. My mother called the Sisters her angels and they were there to sing and pray for her as she entered eternity. This was an incredible blessing. Sr. Theodosia spoke about the care of our elders at SOBOR I (May 2014). She shared the challenges of maintaining St. Joseph s Home in our secular health care system and the needs of our elders, particularly those who are no longer able to actively participate in the life of the community. (This wass particular timely as our nation has no law to protect the sick and vulnerable from assisted suicide and Pope Francis has spoken clearly about our responsibilities in his recent Catechesis on Elders.) At times we as Ukrainian Catholics are guilty of relegating our faith to a sort of quaint folklore, filled with lovely symbols and traditions and all too often we forget that our faith, and following our Lord is matter of life and death. Not because God is out to punish our evil misdeeds but because He wants to lead us to become who we were meant to be, like Him, filled with life and true love now and forever. However, it is when we encounter people like Sr. Theodosia and the Sisters of her Order that we come face to face with that truth. They are filled with joy of the gospel as they pour out their lives in service of God and others because they have encountered Christ and desire His love with all their heart. Whether you agreed or disagreed with Sr. T you could never question her love of God and his Church. On April 20, 2015 when we said our final farewell to Sr. Theodosia at St. George s Cathedral in Saskatoon, it was clear that God is faithful to His promise to grant the heart s desire of the ones whose hearts are set on Him. Eternal Memory+ Christ is Risen! Deborah Larmour Thought for the Month: This was posted on a church sign: Feed your faith, and your fears will starve. Amen! 6

8 CNEWA CANADA HELPS HASSEKEH CHRISTIANS IN SYRIA Ottawa, March 4, On February 26, Catholic Near East Welfare Association (CNEWA) Canada sent $45,000 in emergency aid to Syria's Assyrian Church of the East to help 900 families that have left their homes, fleeing the Islamic State that has taken over Hassekeh, a predominantly Christian area north of Syria on the border of Iraq. As soon as Michel Constantin, Regional Director of CNEWA Lebanon, learned that the area was besieged by the Islamic State, he immediately contacted Bishop Aprim Nathniel of Hassekeh's Assyrian Church of the East. "We are appalled by this new attack that has caused the exodus of hundreds of Christians, fleeing 18 of the 35 villages in this region. The aid we are sending to the Assyrian Church will be used to distribute boxes of food, worth $40 each, providing for a family of five for about two weeks." CNEWA is urging the general public to renew their aid to displaced persons and refugees, victims of the war raging in Syria. CNEWA's core mission is to help the Christian community increasingly threatened by extremist groups that have taken advantage of the political instability to prey on the most vulnerable. The Melkite Church of Syria has confirmed that at least 450,000 Christians have left Syria over the past two years and expects this figure to increase if the war continues. Anyone wishing to support the Assyrian Christians can make a donation to CNEWA Canada by mailing a cheque (payable to "Emergency Syria") to CNEWA Canada, 1247 Kilborn Place, Ottawa, Ontario, K1H 6K9, visiting or calling toll free An official receipt for tax purposes will be issued for donations of $10 or more. About CNEWA CNEWA, mandated by the Pope in 1926, is well established in the Middle East with offices in Amman, Beirut and Jerusalem. CNEWA currently manages emergency programs in Gaza, Iraq and Syria. The organization's efforts also extend to Lebanon, Egypt and Jordan. Elsewhere in the world, CNEWA maintains a presence in the northeast of Africa, India and Eastern Europe, primarily in the Ukraine. Contact: Carl Hétu, National Director, Canada HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN SYRIA: GIVING HOPE THROUGH SOLIDARITY It has been four years since the beginning of the civil war in Syria. This humanitarian crisis now affects more than 12 million people, not counting the 3.5 million Syrian refugees who have fled mostly to Turkey, Lebanon and Jordan. The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development and Peace (CCODP) has contributed more than $13 million to projects for Syria, including funds from the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada. In a special report entitled "Crisis in Syria: Giving Hope through Solidarity", CCODP outlines the projects it has supported since 2012, directly helping 80,000 families through its Caritas network partners in Syria, Lebanon, Turkey and Jordan. Development and Peace has also launched an online petition for peace in Syria. The campaign is asking the Government of Canada to take action to ensure the safety and needs of Syrian civilians, and to make greater efforts for an inclusive peace process in the country. Two other Canadian Catholic organizations are also raising funds to help support Syrian refugees: Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) Canada, and CNEWA Canada. In a news release published in March 2015, ACN reports that since the beginning of the Syrian conflict it has raised $ 8,675,000 in emergency aid. Also in a news release published during March, CNEWA Canada announced that as of February 26 it had sent "$45,000 in emergency aid to Syria's Assyrian Church of the East to help 900 families that have left their homes, fleeing the Islamic State that has taken over Hassekeh, a predominantly Christian area north of Syria on the border of Iraq." 7
