3 Deacon s Desk I asked Deacon Ed to write in my stead this week on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of his ordination to the diaconate. FRNW Dear People of St. Martin of Tours Parish, The Lord can work wonders in our life if we allow Him to. I was very young when I began following the Gospel. At eight years old, I had my first parish. It consisted of friends in the neighborhood, and I would play Mass for them. In the backyard, I set up rows of chairs with a table for the altar and had little white candy wavers for the breads. Many of the children were not Catholic, but I taught them the responses to the prayers anyway. Answering their questions but at eight years old, I doubt that my answers and explanations had any theological basis but they sounded good enough to keep their attention as they learn to respond to: Dominus vobiscum with Et cum spiritu tuo and sing the Agnus Dei, just as I had been taught at St Wenceslaus School. Maybe, just maybe, one or two of the boys or girls may be Catholic today. This was my unconscious beginnings to go out and evangelize others. After eighth grade I went to the Seminary for High School and advanced to making vows of Poverty, Chastity and Obedience as a Divine Word Missionary Brother. After a nine year stay, I returned home, married and in 1970 made St Thomas More Parish in North County my Parish where the Lord was calling me to once again evangelize others. In the parish I was active in the social activities and the Parish Council willing to help out wherever needed. In 1980, the associate pastor asked me if I would help him start the RCIA program in the parish. It was very exciting to once again enrich others as I shared my faith and life experiences. When the associate was transferred, I continued the program until the parish closed in August of 1999, which is when I joined St Martin of Tours Parish. One evening while at St Thomas More Parish I was beginning the RCIA class, the pastor stopped by the room to ask if he could sit in on the class. After a half hour, he got up and excused himself to the class, and asked me if I could stop by the rectory to see him before I went home that night, and he left. Now I was very puzzled, I was concerned and wondering what was that all about. The question that kept going thru my mind was: Did I say or teach something that was wrong or was a heresy? When I went to the rectory, the first question that Father asked was: Did you ever consider becoming a Deacon? I told him that I had but never did anything about it. He suggested that I go to an information evening to find out all about the Formation Program and what being a deacon was about. He handed me some papers and pointed out that he had already filled out the requested information and I could hand them in after I signed them. Following the call of Christ, In 1985 I began classes, and on February 11, 1989, the feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, Archbishop May ordained 24 of us as Deacons to serve the Archdiocese in different parishes. So once again I continued to share my faith this time as a deacon in Parish ministry, In the Formation Program I was told that one of the qualities for being an effective deacon was to be flexible as change was going to be a main part of being an effective minister. A deacon is called to a ministry of service. To serve and assist the pastor in whatever ways that are needed within the parish. And for the past thirty years with God s help and the guidance of the Holy Spirit and the intercession of the Blessed Mother, I have enjoyed assisting at two different parishes and nine different pastors and hundreds of people in many different ways and enjoying every moment, and with God s help I look forward to continuing serving for as long as I am able. 7 Dash s den Dear Humans, There is this man here at Church that you all know. He gives me treats and pets me, and I like him because he also helps my Daddy a lot with doing stuff around the Church. I heard Daddy and him talking how long he has been helping, not only Daddy but some other humans around here for some twenty years and before that he was doing the same thing for ten years at another Church before he came here. Wow that makes a total of thirty years that he has been at it! Daddy calls him Deacon Ed and thanks him for being a Deacon for thirty years. I like being at Church because it is such a nice place to be and to meet a nice Human like Deacon Ed. Congratulations to you, Deacon! Woof!
