August 5, 2018 The Transfiguration (Feast Day August 6) is the last work competed by the great Renaissance painter Raphael (March 28, 1483 April 6, 1520), who was a contemporary of Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. The Transfiguration event at the top of the painting is paired with the later Gospel episode at the bottom, which depicts the Apostles unsuccessful attempt to free a possessed boy of his demonic possession until Christ s arrival. The lesson? Without me, says the Lord, you can do nothing (John 15:4). The painting is on display at the Vatican Art Museum. 3 In the past week I have been making a list of priorities for St. Martin of Tours Parish. We have many problems: The vacant school building, ageing parishioners, people moving into the neighborhood who are of a non-church-going generation, and so on. But I keep coming back to the same top priority, which is the priority of prayer. A year ago we began instituting 30-hour Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament leading up to the First Friday of each month. My desire was that this would expand to become a weekly practice, until our goal of Perpetual Adoration was achieved. Unfortunately, we seem to be in a holding pattern and there hasn t been enough response to increase our practice to more than once a month. I think we forget how powerful prayer really is. So many of the difficulties of our lives our worries, concerns, and plans can be resolved if we, as a united parish, make a choice to return to prayer. Here is an example of what can happen if we all unite in prayer. The following is an account of a real historical event that took place when many of you were young children: On the night of October, 1960, about a million pilgrims responded to the request of the pope and spent the night outdoors in a bone-chilling rain before the Blessed Sacrament, praying the Rosary at Fatima. At the same time, over 300 dioceses throughout the world joined with them. Pope John XXIII sent a special blessing to all taking part in this unprecedented night of reparation. These Rosaries and sacrifices of millions obtained another astonishing intervention. Less than two weeks later on October 24, the Soviets new long-range A-bomb missile unexpectedly blew up during a test, killing hundreds of top military leaders and scientists. Right after his shoepounding UN episode, Khrushchev was forced to pull up stakes and return in haste to Moscow, cancelling all subsequent engagements. This information was suppressed at the time by Soviet media, yet after the fall of the Soviet Union records of the event were made available to the West. This event called The Nedelin Disaster or The Catastrophe at Baikonur Cosmodrome. Marshall Nedelin, one of Russia's leading authorities on nuclear energy, and several government officials were present for the final testing of the missile that was going to be presented to Khrushchev. When countdown was completed, the missile, for some reason, did not leave the launch pad. After 15 or 20 minutes, Nedelin and all the others came out of the shelter. When they did, the missile exploded killing over 300 people top military leaders and scientists. This disaster set back Russia's nuclear program 20 years, preventing all-out atomic warfare and the "burying" of the U.S. and the West. And it happened on the night when the whole Catholic world was on its knees before the Blessed Sacrament, gathered at the feet of our Rosary Queen in Fatima. Our Lady does not want nuclear war. Without prayer, nothing is possible. With prayer, all things are possible.
