Psalm 126:3 THE HOPE AND PROMISE OF REDEMPTION The prophet Jeremiah prophesies the end of the Babylonian exile. He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God s love and care for us. Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves (Psalm 126:5 6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. 3 Christ the Pantocrator by Father Vincent Continuing my instruction on the image of Christ the Pantocrator which was recently painted in the dome of our Church, this week, as promised, we begin to explain the rich symbolism purposely painted into the byzantine Icons. There is a whole series of disciplines and theologies reflected and expressed in Icons. The most important aspect is that an Icon expresses Beauty and Truth. Creating something beautiful and truthful must be learned with great effort and patience. First, it is encouraged that the artist, or the iconographer, spend some time in prayer and fasting, placing themselves before the Holy and asking for the grace to guide their hand in giving form to the mysteries of God for others to ponder and venerate. The connecting point of the divine and the human is mostly expressed in the eyes of the Icon. The eyes of an Icon are meant to be windows for us to get a glimpse of heaven and for heaven to get a glimpse of us. There are certain rules that are expressed in the art of painting the eyes of an Icon; the first being that the eyes are the mirror of the soul. The Virgin Mary and the saints always look directly at us and engage us whereas the eyes of Christ never look directly at us because of Jesus being both God and Man. His eyes also express a double meaning: one eye being the All Knowing and All-Seeing eye of God and the other the human and merciful eye of Jesus as one of us. This is why, wherever you stand in Church, the eyes of Jesus seem like they not only follow us around but, at the same time, they are looking at us with love, waiting for us to come to Him. Another feature on the face of Christ is the two locks of hair on His forehead which represent the Divine and Human nature of Christ. Moving down to the robes of Christ, the bright blue mantle represents Christ s humanity covering over the red and gold parts of the tunic. These two colors (the red and gold) represent Hi s divinity. The imperial stole on the left shoulder under the mantel represents Christ as the King of Kings. This insertion of imperial insignias also serves to remind the Emperor/Cesar, and all those in authority, that they are not equal to God and they too are subjected to the Christ as Lord of all. To whom much has been given much more is demanded - none of us is exempt or above the authority of God. If you continue to look upon the image of Christ, you notice that one hand (the Left hand of Christ) holds either an open or closed book representing Christ as the Living Word (Logos). Another aspect of the book in Christ s hand signifies Christ as the Teacher fulfilling the prophecies of old that God will teach His people. In our image in the dome, Christ takes the words of Jesus from Scripture inviting all to come to Him and find rest. The Right Hand of Christ, at first glance, is posed in blessing, the index finger straight up representing the Greek letter I and the middle finger slightly curved representing C. In Greek the IC represents the name Jesus. The thumb crossed over the forth finger representing the Greek letter X and the pinky slightly curved again represents the Greek letter C. The two letters, XC, thus signifies the word Christ or the Anointed of God. It is Jesus Christ blessing everyone who comes to Him. The other interesting fact is that this hand of blessing is larger or out of proportion with the rest of the Image and this is because God is always blessing us. The gold that surrounds the Images and the Sanctuary of the Church, also has a significant meaning, it represents heaven. In closing, I hope and pray that when we come before the Altar of God, we are reminded that we are standing before the mystery of the Divine who, out of love, reaches down and envelopes us. I pray this brings peace to all our hearts. Next week, we will speak of the images below the Christ and the beautiful stain glass windows.

Trigésimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario 28 de octubre de 2018 Estábamos alegres, pues ha hecho grandes cosas por su pueblo el Señor. Salmo 126 (125):3 LA ESPERANZA Y PROMESA DE REDENCIÓN El profeta Jeremías anuncia el fin del exilio en Babilonia. Describe cómo los débiles y los tristes ahora regresarán con alegría. Éste es el pueblo dispersado de Dios: los ciegos y cojos; preñadas y paridas. Serán guiados por un camino llano para que nadie tropiece. La bondad y misericordia del Señor están con este pueblo débil y deshecho. Aquí y en el Salmo 126 (125) encontramos imágenes poéticas extremadamente hermosas del amor y cuidado que Dios tiene por nosotros. Los que sembraban con lágrimas, / cosechan entre cantares. Al ir, iba llorando, / llevando la semilla; / al volver, vuelve cantando, / trayendo sus gavillas (Salmo 126[125]:5-6). Si bien Dios tuvo que castigar a Israel por sus muchos pecados, nunca se olvidó de ellos aun cuando estaban dispersos, y los llevó de regreso a la tierra de sus ancestros para que prosperaran y fueran felices de nuevo. En esto encontramos la esperanza y la promesa de nuestra propia redención al reunirnos, desde todos los rincones del mundo, para celebrar el gran banquete de Dios. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En México y otros países latinoamericanos se están preparando para celebrar el Día de Todos los Santos (1 o de noviembre) y el Día de los Fieles Difuntos (2 de noviembre). Estas dos fiestas cristianas fueron mezcladas con antiguos ritos y devociones mesoamericanas. Ellas enfatizan que la muerte es parte normal del ciclo de la vida y que los difuntos no se olvidan de sus seres queridos. Esta es la base de la devoción católica a los santos: Dios es Dios de los vivos y no de los muertos (Mateo 22:32); por eso los muertos siguen vivos en una nueva dimensión. En estos días, las familias pasan tiempo en los cementerios, visitando las tumbas de sus parientes y amistades, lavando las lápidas, poniendo arreglos de zempasuchil y encendiendo veladoras. En casa, muchos latinos construyen y adornan altarcitos dedicándolos a las almas de sus seres queridos que han muerto. En los altares se encuentran papel picado, fotos de los difuntos, artículos religiosos, comida, bebida, cigarritos y otras cosas que los ya muertos disfrutaban durante sus vidas. Para los niños muertos se añaden juguetitos que les gustaban en vida

5 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal As of October , 150 parish families have pledged $60,462.00; $51, received toward our parish goal of $55,455. for the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal to assist Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio and our diocesan church to maintain its many services and ministries. Thanks to the 150 Families who generously responded we are $3722, from completing our goal. The remaining amount pledged $5007, hopefully will be returned to St. Joe s to help pay our outstanding debts. Mass Book for 2019 If you have had a loved one buried from the parish during the last year, you may reserve a Mass to be celebrated for that deceased person. This Mass must be arranged personally at the Parish Office on 43rd St. during the week (October 29 to November 2). The offering for a Mass will be $15 for a weekday Mass and $25 for a Saturday evening and Sunday Mass. The new Mass book for 2019 will be open on Saturday, November 3rd from 9:00 am to 11:00 am, in the Parish Center for anyone who desires a Mass to be celebrated for the intention of a loved one in the next calendar year. The Mass book will be closed during the week of November 5th, and will re-open on Monday, November 12.
