3 Hosts for the 164 th Council of the Episcopal Diocese of Texas are the Hispanic congregations of the diocese including churches that offer worship in Spanish. They include: Austin Area: St. James St. John s St. Mary Magdalene, Manor San Francisco de Asís, Austin Houston Area: Christ Church Cathedral, Houston San Albán, Houston San Bernabé, Houston San Mateo, Houston San Pablo, Houston San Pedro, Pasadena Santa María Virgen, Houston Music for the opening Eucharist will be led by Sandra Montes. Musicians are from the Diocese s Hispanic congregations. Dancers are from San Pablo, Houston. 3

4 Prelude The People stand and join in singing: Hymn 544 Jesus Shall Reign (See page 16-17) Hymn 786 Cantad al Señor (Sing to the Lord) (See page 18) The people standing, the Bishop says Blessed be God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. People And blessed be his kingdom, now and for ever. Amen. The Bishop then says Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. When appointed, the following hymn or some other song of praise is sung or said, all standing Glory to God in the highest, and peace to his people on earth. Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father, we worship you, we give you thanks, we praise you for your glory. Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father, Lord God, Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world: have mercy on us; you are seated at the right hand of the Father: receive our prayer. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, 4

5 Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen. The Celebrant says to the people The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Celebrant Let us pray. O God, you have made of one blood all the peoples of the earth, and sent your blessed Son to preach peace to those who are far off and to those who are near: Grant that people everywhere may seek after you and find you, bring the nations into your fold, pour out your Spirit upon all flesh, and hasten the coming of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. O God of unchangeable power and eternal light: Look favorably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery; by the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquillity the plan of salvation; let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. The Ministry of the Word Old Testament Deuteronomy 10:10-12, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights, as I had done the first time. And once again the Lord listened to me. The Lord was unwilling to destroy you. The Lord said to me, Get up, go on your journey at the head of the people, that they may go in and occupy the land that I swore to their ancestors to give them. So now, O Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you? Only to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all his ways, to love him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul... Circumcise, then, the foreskin of your heart, and do not be stubborn any longer. For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who is not partial and 5

6 takes no bribe, who executes justice for the orphan and the widow, and who loves the strangers, providing them food and clothing. You shall also love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Psalm Hallelujah! Praise the LORD, O my soul! * I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 2 Put not your trust in rulers, nor in any child of earth, * for there is no help in them. 3 When they breathe their last, they return to earth, * and in that day their thoughts perish. 4 Happy are they who have the God of Jacob for their help! * whose hope is in the LORD their God; 5 Who made heaven and earth, the seas, and all that is in them; * who keeps his promise for ever; 6 Who gives justice to those who are oppressed, * and food to those who hunger. 7 The LORD sets the prisoners free; the LORD opens the eyes of the blind; * the LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; 8 The LORD loves the righteous; the LORD cares for the stranger; * he sustains the orphan and widow, but frustrates the way of the wicked. 9 The LORD shall reign for ever, * your God, O Zion, throughout all generations. Hallelujah! Epistle Galatians 3:26-29 For in Christ Jesus you are all children of God through faith. As many of you as were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is no longer Jew or Greek, there is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female; 6

7 for all of you are one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham s offspring, heirs according to the promise. People The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Hymn 529 In Christ there is no East or West (See page 19) All standing, the Deacon or a Priest reads the Gospel, first saying The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ. Gospel Matthew 28:16-20 Now the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain to which Jesus had directed them. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and said to them, All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age. After the Gospel, the Reader says The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ. The Sermon The Most Rev. Carlos Touche-Porter The Nicene Creed We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, 7

8 8 God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshipped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Intercessor For our President, Barack; for our governor, Rick; for the Congress and the legislatures; for the courts of the land, and for all who exercise authority over and hold responsibility for others, we pray to the Lord. Kyrie Eleison. People Christe Eleison. Intercessor For all those who work for peace and justice, and all those who feed, heal, and minister to the dispossessed and the destitute, we pray to the Lord. Kyrie Eleison. People: Christe Eleison. Intercessor For God s Creation, that we might know it as God s, preserve its beauty, and use its resources justly, wepray to the Lord. Kyrie Eleison. Intercessor For the poor, the sick, and the hungry; for the unemployed and the underemployed; for the oppressed and those in prison; and for all those who suffer from any grief or trouble, we pray to the Lord. Kyrie Eleison. People Christe Eleison. Intercessor For the departed, and for all the saints of God, who rest in the sure and certain hope of resurrection, we pray to the Lord. Kyrie Eleison. Amen. The Peace The Bishop says The peace of the Lord be always with you. People And also with you. The Holy Communion The liturgy continues with the Offertory. Hymn Pan de Vida (Bread of Life) (See page 20-21) Deacons prepare the Table. The People present offerings, including bread and wine. Doxology Then the bishop goes to the Lord s Table as chief Celebrant and, joined by other bishops and presbyters, proceeds with the celebration of the Eucharist. The People remain standing. The Bishop, faces them and says The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Bishop Lift up your hearts. People We lift them to the Lord. Bishop Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give him thanks and praise. 10

11 The Bishop proceeds. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Through the great shepherd of your flock, Jesus Christ our Lord; who after his resurrection sent forth his apostles to preach the Gospel and to teach all nations; and promised to be with them always, even to the end of the ages. 12 Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in you mercy, sent Jesus Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all. He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a perfect sacrifice for the whole world. On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me. Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith: Bishop and People Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. The Bishop continues We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son, the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom. All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever. Amen. 12

13 And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say, Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Breaking of the Bread The Bishop breaks the consecrated Bread. A period of silence is kept. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving. 14 After Communion the Bishop says Eternal God, heavenly Father, you have graciously accepted us as living members of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ, and you have fed us with spiritual food in the Sacrament of his Body and Blood. Send us now into the world in peace, and grant us strength and courage to love and serve you with gladness and singleness of heart; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Bishop The blessing, mercy, and grace of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be upon you, and remain with you for ever. Amen.
