He describes how the weak and sorrowful people now return with joy. These are the scattered people of God: the blind and the lame, the mothers and pregnant women. They shall be led along an easy road so that no one will stumble. The Lord s kindness and mercy are on all these weak and broken people. Here and in Psalm 126 we find the most lovely poetic images of God s love and care for us. Those that sow in tears / shall reap rejoicing. Although they go forth weeping, / carrying the seed to be sown, / they shall come back rejoicing, / carrying their sheaves (Psalm 126:5 6). Although God had to punish Israel for their many sins, God never forgot them, scattered as they were, and brings them all back to the land of their ancestors, there to flourish and be joyful again. We can see in this the hope and the promise of our own redemption, gathered from the far corners of the earth into the great banquet of God. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

3 THIS WEEK AT ST. MARK S TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITIONS POPE S MONTHLY PRAYER INTENTIONS OCT EVANGELIZATIONS: The Mission of Religions That consecrated religious men and women may bestir themselves and be present among the poor, the marginalized, and those who have no voice. Today is the feast of the Forty Martyrs of England and Wales, the first representative body of many Catholics who died for their faith between 1535 and 1679 to be beatified or canonized. Almost all of them died at Tyburn, a place of public execution near today s Marble Arch in Hyde Park, London. The first to suffer were Carthusian monks who refused to swear an oath supporting Henry VIII as supreme head of the Church in England, and the last was Saint Oliver Plunkett, the Primate Archbishop of Ireland. The method of execution was particularly vile, since the condemned were hanged and their living bodies quartered to be displayed around London as a horrific warning. Today, the tree-like gallows provides the design of a religious symbol, the canopy over the altar of the martyrs in Tyburn Convent. There, at the heart of the bustling city, a monastic community of women practices contemplative prayer and spiritual hospitality in the Benedictine tradition. Oddly, the community is French in origin; it was expelled from France a century ago when France outlawed contemplative monastic life. England, where the laws against Catholicism had been lifted, invited the community in. In gratitude to their new homeland, and in honor of those who gave their lives for the Catholic faith, the nuns came to Tyburn. In the public crypt, coats of arms stand for each of the 350 martyrs. If you have any questions or need more information, call the pastoral office at (210) Man of Many Talents When you think of Jesus, what do you think was his job? Healer of the sick, the lame and the blind, as in today s gospel? Preacher? Teacher? Leader of men? Messiah? The second reading from Hebrews reminds us of his main duty: Priest. It calls him a High Priest, referring to the Jewish priesthood in which one priest was chosen each year to offer the most important sacrifices and so appeal to God for forgiveness of the peoples sins. Now this may sound like primitive religion, but it actually lets us understand Jesus even better. The high priest offered sacrifice for his own sins, as well as the peoples. While Jesus did not sin, he experienced temptations just as we do and so can intercede for us as one who knows what it is like to be tempted. He also knows suffering, from his passion and death on the cross. If you ever wonder if you deserve to be forgiven, remember that Jesus died for all sinners, deserving or not. The High Priest was the one to bring the Israelites prayers to God and God s blessings to the people. Jesus also brings our prayers to his Father and shows us the Father s love. Our baptism gives us a share in that priesthood. You don t have to be ordained to pray for your friends and family. You don t have to be a bishop to bring God s love to those around you. When you listen to a friend who is hurting, or forgive someone who hurts you, you are blessing them with God s love. When you encourage them to have faith and trust in the Lord, you are bringing them to God. You are sharing in the priesthood of Christ. Tom Schmidt, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. 7 ARCHDIOCESE OF SAN ANTONIO STEWARDSHIP Parish Update on Archdiocesan Capital Campaign A few weeks ago, St. Mark s announced its participation in the Archdiocese of San Antonio s On the Way - Ándale! Capital Campaign. Every parish and mission across the San Antonio archdiocese is participating in this campaign. Archbishop Gustavo recently sent a letter to Father Kevin asking him to continue and to reinforce St. Mark s participation in the On the Way- jandale! Campaign. In the letter, Archbishop reminded Father of importance of this capital campaign for our own parish and for the people of God in the Archdiocese of San Antonio. The participation of our parishioners is vital to the success of the campaign. St. Mark s goal for this campaign is $3,053,000. Meeting our goal will help renovate Catholic Schools, strengthen Campus Ministry, modernize the seminary, support lay ministry formation, build a pilgrimage center at Mission Concepcion, fund Catholic Charities outreach projects and establish new parishes. Most importantly, St. Mark s will be able to reduce the debt we incurred with the West Campus expansion. Therefore, we are determined to meet our goal! To represent the St. Mark s parish community as an On the Way - Ándale! volunteer, please call the Pastoral Office at (210) Let us embrace a new awareness of our stewardship of the Church. An excerpt from We Stewards Are a Testimony to Hope published in International Catholic Stewardship Council s October 2018 newsletter One of the profoundly prophetic voices of the 20th century, Karl Rahner, insisted: AMOUNT NEEDED TO MEET PARISH GOAL: $28,890 REGISTRATION FEE $25 FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO REGISTER, GO TO OR CALL (210) ARCHBISHOP S APPEAL UPDATE ON PARISH GOAL Parish Goal: $193, Current Pledge Total: $164, Need to raise: $28, For more information, visit the Appeal webpage at or call the Office of Archbishop s Appeal at (210) Quite enough terrible and base things have happened in the history of the church... Where would we go if we left the church? Would we then be more faithful to the liberating spirit of Jesus if, egotistical sinners that we are, we distanced ourselves as the pure from this poor church? We can do our part to remove its meanness only if we try to live in the church as Christians and help bear the responsibility of constantly changing it from inside (The Practice of Faith, New York: Crossroad, 1983, p. 15). As we persevere through the current crisis, let us remain mindful that Jesus taught us how not only to overcome evil, but to redeem it. Christian stewards, as active instruments of God s mercy, understand the redemptive quality of being stewards of the Gospel. It is in fidelity to this stewardship, made manifest in prayer, word and deed, that our testimony of hope emerges to reveal the healing power of Christ s presence.

Copyright J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
