Second Sunday of Lent February 25, 2018 If God is for us, who can be against us? Romans 8:31b * THE OBEDIENCE OF ABRAHAM AND JESUS God tested Abraham by asking not for an ordinary sacrifice, which would have been a partial burning with the meat divided between God and the people and eaten by those who sacrificed, but for a holocaust, a total burning of the sacrificial animal. This type of sacrifice consecrated the entire offering to God alone. This is what God was asking of Abraham in offering his only son, Isaac. When Abraham demonstrated his obedience, that was enough. This story from today s scriptures foretells the completion of the blood sacrifices of the old covenant in the new covenant: the blood of God s own Son, offered to us on the cross and in the Eucharist. Abraham s obedience foreshadows the obedience of Jesus to God s promise of salvation. The obedience of Abraham is rewarded in the birth to him, through Isaac, of many nations. 4 Lenten Regulations Abstinence & FASTING The Church requires all the faithful who have reached their 14th year of age to abstain totally from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays of Lent. All the faithful between the ages of 18 and 59 are also bound to observe the fasting regulation on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday. This practice involves limiting oneself to a single full meal and avoiding food between meals. BAPTISMS Please note that there are no Baptisms during the season of Lent. All Baptisms during the Easter Season will take place during the Sunday Masses only. In order to make arrangements for your child s Christening please call the parish office at: Lenten folder Please make sure to take home a Lenten folder for 40 Days of Sacrificial Offering through your daily personal sacrifices. Romanos 8:31b * Bienvenido Padre Luis Alberto Formoso El P. Luis Alberto Formoso pertenece a la Arquidiócesis de la Habana, Cuba. Fue ordenado sacerdote a los 25 años el 24 de agosto de Su primer ministerio lo ejerció en la Parroquia de Güines por 8 años. Más tarde fue asignado a la Parroquia de Jesús del Monte por 19 años. Actualmente se desempeña como asesor del Movimiento Familiar Cristiano y Pastoral familiar de la Arquidiócesis de la Habana y es párroco en la Parroquia de El Salvador del Mundo del Cerro. Es director espiritual del Seminario mayor de San Carlos y San Ambrosio y recién comienza a trabajar en la Pastoral Penitenciaria. Durante el año imparte retiros y conferencias a comunidades, religiosas y religiosos así como asesoramiento espiritual. Su profunda vida de oración y su amor intenso por la Eucaristía, lo hacen un pastor muy cercano a la gente sencilla, que constantemente lo busca para el sacramento de la confesión y dirección espiritual. *************************************************************** TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE Regresando a los tres pilares de la conversión, el ayuno es mucho más que el simple hecho de no comer, es aprender a negarme a mí mismo para que ya no sea yo quien vivo, sino Cristo que vive en mí. Es el negarme de ciertas cosas para dar vida a los demás. El ayudar es poner en práctica la caridad y la justicia social. Es buscar el cargar con nuestra propia cruz y ayudar a los demás con la de ellos. En otras palabras, es practicar la misma generosidad de Dios quien hace caer la lluvia sobre los buenos y los malos, es amar sin distinción de personas. Contemporáneamente, el orar es entrar en conversación con Dios, es recogerse para entrar en la presencia de Dios, con todo lo que uno es y todo lo que uno tiene, poniendo todo en las manos misericordiosas del Padre que nos ama. Esta Cuaresma procuremos hacer lo que debemos hacer todo el año: ayunar, ayudar y orar.
