St. John Paul II noted that the family "is the cradle of life and love" (On the Lay Members of Christ's Faithful, 40). Yet unmet expectations and divergent priorities can cause tension in even the most loving family situations. This is true for us, and it was true for Jesus! In today's Gospel, Jesus has returned home to Nazareth. A large crowd gathered, and Jesus finds himself facing stiff opposition from his family. This was likely Jesus' large, extended family. The Semitic language has no specific words for extended relatives, so everyone is "brother" or "sister." The entire clan has gotten wind of Jesus' preaching, and they are not amused. "They set out to seize him, for they said, 'He is out of his mind.'" To make matters worse, the religious authorities even accuse Jesus of being possessed by a demon. It's a mess by any standards. The family's perspective is perhaps understandable. In Jewish culture, teachers and scribes underwent intensive schooling and apprenticeships, none of which Jesus had done. The family knew Jesus the carpenter, not Jesus the rabbi. For them, Jesus' bold preaching threatened the reputation of their family! Jesus' words to his family can seem controversial. "Who are my mother and my brothers?" Yet Jesus knows what he is about. He has always known he would be about the business of his Heavenly Father. And what is that business? It is the business of the new covenant and the Kingdom of God. In this Kingdom, we are all adopted sons and daughters of the King. Jesus begins, even now, to expand the perspective of his listeners. Being welcomed into this family does not depend on our families of birth or ethnic origin, but a wholehearted commitment to "do the will of God." Question of the Week: Whom, in need, could you invite to share a happy occasion with your family? CREATING SAFE ENVIRONMENTS FOR CHILDREN This summer when you children are out of school and on different schedules, meeting new people and going to new places, make sure you talk to them often about their experiences and the people they ve met. Listen carefully to your children. If possible, observe and get to know the other children and adults who are part of your children s summertime fun. Above all, communicate your safety concerns to your children. Make sure they know that they can come to you with any concerns they may have about the people they interact with. And if you hear of or observe behaviors that may be inappropriate, make sure to communicate your feelings to people who are in a position to intervene. Communications is key to creating and maintaining a safe environment all year round. To see what the Diocese of Erie is doing to help create safe environments, check out: TEENAGERS SUMMER DISCIPLESHIP CAMP OFFERED The Diocese of Erie s Summer Discipleship Camp (Camp Totus Tuus), for middle school students who want to spend time with other Catholic Christians, will be held July at St. Philip Church in Linesville. 5 Page Five Queen of the World Church, St. Marys, Pennsylvania June 10, 2018 Dear Parishioners, This liturgical year, the Gospel of Mark is shared with us as the main focus during the Liturgy of the Word at Sunday Mass, especially as we now return to the succession of Ordinary Sundays. There are some exceptions. For example, later this summer we will take a several week vacation in the Gospel of John - more on that as the time approaches. Also, there is one feast day (at the end of this month) that usurps the Ordinary Sunday because of its importance. Mostly, though, we will be experiencing the story of Jesus as St. Mark tells it. He is the first evangelist to write things down for us. Matthew and Luke depend greatly on his text. To say that another way, much of what we know about Jesus comes from this gospel. Thank goodness for this inspired and inspiring text. Mark s is a brief and concise account. He doesn t get verbose, nor does he clean up the narrative as the other evangelists tend to do. We have here a portrait of Jesus with a strong personality with various emotions that are freely expressed. There are only a few lengthy narratives - so, when they come along, we pay them great attention, for they are telling us about a particular emphasis in Mark. These will include a basic teaching parable and the great battle against evil. Mark tries to push the reader toward the passion narrative. He makes it clear that we do not know or understand Jesus except when we get to the Cross. Don t tell anyone yet is a common theme, reminding you and me that, even if we think we know the outcome, we don t get it quite yet - we have a ways to go to get to the Cross ourselves! Mark will also remind us how swiftly things happen. There is a power for good in Jesus which brings about immediate results, immediate movement, immediate change, immediate help. This means we have to be ready, poised, and open to what life in Christ will bring us, even if this includes persecution or suffering. After all, those are just opportunities to imitate Jesus! Let us rejoice that the Apostolic Church included people like St. Mark, who responded to the charge of Jesus to go, tell the Good News! Sunday by Sunday, let us hear the Lord s voice with hearts open to His call to follow him fr jeff DAILY SCRIPTURE READINGS Monday, June 11th Acts 11:21b-26; 13:1-3/Ps 98:16 [cf. 2b]/Mt 5:1-12 Tuesday, June 12th 1 Kgs 17:7-16/Ps 4:2-3, 4-5, 7b-8 [7a]/Mt 5:13-16 Wednesday, June 13th - St. Anthony of Padua 1 Kgs 18:20-39/Ps 16:1b-2ab, 4, 5ab and 8, 11 [1b]/Mt 5:17-19 Thursday, June 14th 1 Kgs 18:41-46/Ps 65:10, 11, [2a]/Mt 5:20-26 Friday, June 15th 1 Kgs 19:9a, 11-16/Ps 27:7-8a, 8b-9abc, [8b]/Mt 5:27-32 Saturday, June 16th 1 Kgs 19:19-21/Ps 16:1b-2a and 5, 7-10 [cf. 5a]/Mt 5:33-37 Sunday, June 17th - Father s Day Ez 17:22-24/Ps 92:2-3, [cf. 2a]/2 Cor 5:6-10/Mk 4:26-34 LITURGY OF THE WORD FOR CHILDREN Today is the last of this season that we will send our younger children off for the Liturgy of the Word for Children. We need to give our presenters time to enjoy summer free of this responsibility. I thank them and their helpers for their preparation and prayer with the children. To see the children s joy as they return to us after hearing, discussing and praying over the story of Jesus is a great blessing to all of us. We will miss that over the summer. But, please, parents do not take the summer off from Church. Let our children continue to encounter Jesus in the big church until we resume this practice, hopefully, in the fall. We could use a couple more presenters and helpers for this ministry. If you are willing to take a turn on occasion to share the Good News of Jesus with our children, please let Fr. Jeff know, We put several resources in you hands to help you do this more easily. GIVE ME AN AMEN, CHURCH! You ll notice those times when I stop at Church, rather flabbergasted by what I perceive as lackluster responses to our prayers. I know our church is a large one, and I know many of us are trained to be quiet in our prayer. But liturgy is PUBLIC PRAYER AND WITNESS to our faith. It require participation and energy, a praying TOGETHER. The most powerful word of prayer we have is AMEN. It means a great deal. It means that I believe, I agree, I give myself to this prayer. I give myself to God in response to His blessings upon me. It is never meant to be a half-hearted conclusion to somebody else s words. It s our being invested. So, please, let your Amen and your and with your Spirit have some energy, some voice, some life, and some meaning in them. Most especially, at the poignant, intimate moment of Communion with the Lord and all of us, please say your Amen to the proclamation, The Body of Christ. this is no time to mumble! If we work on this who knows, someday I may get you to sing, too! CURSILLO Beginning Thursday, June 21st, there is a Cursillo here in town, at Elk County Catholic, for men. This is a great opportunity for an uplifting weekend, a break from the usual, a deeper look at faith and life, and a great time to be renewed in our Catholic tradition. I hope some men from our parish will be so moved as to attend. There are many Cursillistas in our parish who will encourage you to enjoy this great weekend. There are several Cursillistas from our area that will be working the weekend along with the priests who assist, so that all the candidates might have the support of our faith community. Please call for more information. Please keep the candidates and the team members in your prayers as the weekend begins on Thursday, June 21st. THURSDAY, OUR SPECIAL DAY Remember that our parish holds Adoration every Thursday from after the morning Mass until Evening Prayer and Benediction at 6:30 pm. Please stop sometime for quiet prayer before the Lord. Join us for the closing prayer, the official prayer of the Church, our concluding praise in thanksgiving for the day. It would be great in the summertime to see MORE people, not less, making the time for this special day for our parish at prayer.
